Pres. Harry S. Truman
The Whi te House
Washington, D. C.
July 31 ,1946
Dear Mr. President:
In taking the oath of office as President of the United States you
swore to protect and preserve the Constitution.
The constitutional right of citizens of Georgia has been violated.
Lynch law and mob violence have taken the place of trinl by jury in
Walton County.
Conspiracy and armed insurrection constitute a Foderal offense. The
head of the State Investigation Bureau of Georgia has stated that,
"under conditions now gxisting in Georgia, we cannot copa with mob
violence". On July 25th, two Negroes, one a veteran, and their wives
were brutally murdered by a gang of twenty to thirty faveist hoodlums.
Therefore, it is your obligation to the people of the United States
to
1. Authorize deputizing and arming of Negroe. and white. people
to defend themselves.
2. Direct nittorney General Tom Clark to see that the lynchers
are caught and sentenced to death:
3. Issue an executive order outlawing the Klu Klux Klan-
4. See that Congress does not adjourn until the anti-lynch law;
the anti-poll tax law and the permanent F E P C law are passed.
5. Declare a national emergency - to prevont the fur ther spread
of fascist terror which has already devoloped in numorous other
localities throughout the country including New York State.
Sincerely yours,
