586 IMMEDIATE RELEASE NOVEMBER 26, 1952 The President has sent the following letter to the Honorable Stanley Woodward, accepting his resignation as United States Ambassador to Canada: Dear Stanley: Your letter of November twenty-fourth brings me the inevitable news of your resignation as Ambassador to Canada. To accept your resignation, effective January 15, 1953, stirs my heart and mind with deep emotions of regret that the time has come for you to take such action and of gratitude for your outstanding contribution as Chief of our Mission in Canada. In terminating your connection with the Forcign Service and the Department of State, our country loses a man of the highest caliber who has rendered distinctive service in the field of diplomacy. Having you represent the United States in the Dominion of Conada has been one of my greatest satisfactions, and in relinquishing the Anbassadorship you leave behind you a record of which you can be justly proud. You have done much to strengthen the spirit of cooporation and the bonds of friendship so pleasantly existing between the United States and our great neighbor to the North. I think I know something of the grati- fication which is yours in the knowledge of this accomplishment. I cannot close without a word from me and the mombers of my family in appreciation of your constant and steadfast PRUMA friendship. In all the years to come this memory will bring us NARA much happiness. We unite in wishing for you and Mrs. Woodward many blessings in the years to come. Very sincerely yours, HARRY S. TRUMAN Following is the text of Ambassador Woodward's letter to the President: Dear Mr. President: I have the honor to tender to you herewith my resig- nation as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Canada, effective January 15, 1953. In doing so, may I express to you my most sincere ap- preciation of the unfailing support which you, the Secretary of State, and the Administration, have given me in my mission. I could not have asked for more considerate understanding or for more inspiring encouragement throughout my entire cour of duty. To an ever increasing degree, the United States and Canada have become friends, neighbors, and partners in the world today, and I am glad to have had an opportunity to make some contribution to this relationship. I relinquish my post in Canada with regret, but with confidence in the continuing rap- prochement of our two countries. After twenty-five years in the Foreign Service and State Department, the time has come to return to private life and to assume the responsibilities and privileges of citizenship in our great country. With an expression of my gratitude for your friendship, believe me, Mr. President, Ever sincerely yours, STANLEY WOODWARD
