IMMEDIATE RELEASE
APRIL 29, 1948
The President today sent the following letter to the
Honorable John F. Sonnett accepting his resignation as Assistant
Attorney General:
"April 29, 1948
" My dear Mr. Sonnett:
It is with great reluctance that I accept your
resignation as Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Anti-
trust Division of the Department of Justice.
As I told you a year ago when you were in charge of the
Claims Division of the Department, the Government sorely needs the
services of persons of your ability and experience. At that time
you agreed to withhold your resignation until you were able to com-
plete the plans we had for the Antitrust Division. Now that these
plans have been completed, and the largest appropriation for anti-
trust enforcement in history has been authorized, I feel that I
must honor your request because of the long sacrifice you have made.
Your seven years in the service of the Government, including
over two years in the Navy, have been marked by a continued devotion
to your work which has brought to a successful conclusion many
important cases.
I take this opportunity of thanking you for your service
to the Nation and wishing you well on your return to private practice.
Very sincerely yours,
(Sgd) HARRY S. TRUMAN"
Mr. Sonnett's letter to the President is as follows:
"April 15, 1948
"Dear Mr. President:
A year ago I withdrew my resignation as Assistant Attorney
General and took charge of the Antitrust Division, in accordance
with your wishes and the wishes of the Attorney General.
I am satisfied that the Division's present enforcement
policy is sound, its personnel competent, and that the recent million
dollar increase in its appropriation will substantially aid Antitrust
enforcement during the next fiscal year.
Under these circumstances, and since I am now completing my
seventh consecutive year of Government service, I feel that I cannot
longer delay my return to private practice. Accordingly, this is my
resignation, effective May 15, 1948.
Please accept my gratitude for your constant and kind
support and confidence during the last three years. It has been a
privilege to serve as part of your Administration.
Sincerely,
(Sgd) JOHN F. SONNETT"
