NATIONAL ARCHIVES AND RECORDS ADMINISTRATION NA Form 14029 (1-98) OF ACITY ANDRIA VIRGINI City of Alexandria, Virginia 1964 All-America City Gadsby's Tavern Museum, 134 North Royal Street, consists of the original Georgian style tavern constructed in 1770 and the City Hotel added in 1792. Named for Englishman John Gadsby who operated the Tavern between 1796 and 1808, the structure functioned as the center of political and social life in the flourishing seaport of Alexandria. According to tradition, it was at this site that George Mason prepared the "Fairfax Resolves," the forerunner of the Virginia Bill of Rights. Here, too, George Washington made his final military appearance on the steps of the Tavern and celebrated his birthnight in the Hotel ballroom. Gadsby's Tavern Museum was restored, furnished and re-opened to the public in 1976. The rooms of the Museum include the Tap room, used by colonial men for eating, drinking, business and socializing, and the Gaming and Assembly rooms in the tavern building, as well as the bedrooms and ballroom of the City Hotel. An ice well, constructed in 1792 adjacent to the Hotel is on view to the public. A privately operated restaurant is also on the premises. The Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10-5 p.m., and Sunday, 1-5 p.m. Regular admission is $1 for adults and $ .50 for children 6-17. Group tours are welcome and available at a discount, but must be scheduled in advance. For more information, contact Gadsby's Tavern Museum at 750-6565. Gadsby's Tavern Museum is owned and operated by the City of Alexandria, Virginia. I KNOW YOU'RE GLAD TO HAVE YOUR FRIENDS HERE TONIGHT -- BECAUSE IT GIVES YOU A CHANCE TO SEE LYNDA FOR A CHANGE. I've been campaigning c her a good bit lately & I WANT YOU TO KNOW -- IF YOU DON'T ALREADY -- WHAT A HELP SHE IS TO OUR PARTY AND TO THE PRESIDENT. / HE SENDS HIS LOVE you to TO BOTH OF YOU. & his thanks to all of you who are here tonight for your support, contributions - all you do for us. I AM HERE TONIGHT TO TALK ABOUT HIM. & I think he is a great Pres. He cares about the people of our Co and understands the problems- and he is courageous - when there are "hard choices to be made 2. IN 1976, WHEN I WAS CAMPAIGNING FOR JIMMY, PEOPLE WANTED TO KNOW WHO HE WAS AND WHAT HE WAS LIKE, I SAID THEN -- AND I CAN REPEAT -- HE IS HONEST, RELIABLE, INTELLIGENT, AND COURAGEOUS. AND HE CARES ABOUT THE PEOPLE OF OUR COUNTRY AND UNDERSTANDS THE PROBLEMS THEY FACE, -- FIRST RAN FOR STATE SENATE - EDUCATION I REMEMBER THE '76 CAMPAIGN -- WE VISITED SENIOR CITIZENS -- One of first things soc see soc hedid asked for the so AFRAID SOCIAL SECURITY PAYMENTS WOULD STOP MENTALLY elderly AFFLICTED strund -- SAW POOR -- DISADVANTAGED - financial basis 3. -- CITIES -- LARGE AND SMALL -- URBAN POLICY -- BIPARTISAN SUPPORT -- MAYORS AND LOCAL OFFICIALS ACROSS THE COUNTRY. I HAVE PERSONALLY SEEN HIM AGONIZE OVER BUDGET DECISIONS -- INVOLVED PROGRAMS THAT HE WANTED TO IMPLEMENT FULLY, BUT INSUFFICIENT FUNDS, HE HAS HAD TO MAKE SOME VERY TOUGH DECISIONS, BUT HIS DECISIONS AS PRESIDENT -- WHETHER THEY BE ON ENERGY, OR THE ECONOMY, OR SOCIAL PROGRAMS -- HAVE BEEN TO MAKE LIFE BETTER FOR ALL OUR PEOPLE. I CAN SAY TO YOU WITHOUT HESITATION -- WISER THAN 4 YEARS AGO -- LEARNED A LOT ABOUT WHAT CAN BE ACCOMPLISHED FOR OUR COUNTRY, SOMETIMES THE HARD WAY! Electrostatio Copy Made for Preservation Purposes he makes them - regardless of political consequences- & he 4. has a great record of achievement Bur A GOOD PARTNERSHIP HAS DEVELOPED WITH CONGRESS -- AND THE EXPERIENCE HAS PAID OFF, 80% LEGISLATION SENT TO CONGRESS. GREAT RECORD! AND NOT JUST THE EASY THINGS. HE HAS LAID A GOOD FOUNDATION FOR SOLVING THE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS THAT HAVE BUILT UP OVER MANY YEARS, WE NOW HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE ENERGY PROGRAM. AND IT'S GOING TO BRING US ENERGY SECURITY BY USING AMERICAN COAL AND OIL AND GAS AND SUNLIGHT -- AND IT'S GOING TO CREATE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF JOBS, AND NOW THAT WE HAVE AN ENERGY POLICY IN PLACE, WE CAN REVITALIZE THE ENTIRE ECONOMY OF OUR COUNTRY, stability 5. ECONOMIC APPROACH IS WORKING GOOD ECONOMIC NEWS. continuity for a better tomorrow ('80's '80's CAN BE A TIME OF EXCITEMENT AND GREAT PROGRESS, AND WE'RE ALL GOING TO BE A PART OF THAT PROGRESS COMMISSION ON '80's. ENERGY, ECONOMY, ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH CARE, TECHNOLOGY.] JIMMY CARTER HAS A SOLID RECORD OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS. BUT THERE ARE OTHER THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT. I've talked in lot of people- stress some points - imp. ONE OF JIMMY CARTER'S GREATEST ASSETS IS HIS MODERATION. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR EXCESS OR EXTREMES IN THE OVAL OFFICE. 6. HE HAS TO BALANCE EXTREME DEMANDS EVERY DAY -- AND MAKE AN ULTIMATE DECISION -- AND HE DOES -- AND OFTEN TAKES THE HEAT FROM EVERY SIDE. BUT HE KNOWS THAT THE JOB OF A PRESIDENT IS TO DO WHAT IS RIGHT AND REALISTIC ISTIC FOR US. there is No room in the Oval office for excess or extremes- JIMMY CARTER IS SMART, HE HAS THE ABILITY TO GRASP DIFFICULT PROBLEMS CRITICAL IN THE OVAL OFFICE, So MANY SERIOUS PROBLEMS COME TO A PRESIDENT AND EVENTS ARE UNPREDICTABLE AND OFTEN DECISIONS HAVE TO BE MADE WITHOUT DELAY. BUT EVEN WHEN DECISIONS ARE MADE WITH MUCH STUDY AND SUFFICIENT TIME, I HAVE NOTICED THAT UNANIMITY AMONG ADVISORS IS MOST RARE WHEN THE PROBLEMS ARE MOST DIFFICULT. Electrostatic Copy Made for Preservation Purposes 7. 5 THERE IS ONLY ONE PERSON WHO HAS ALL THE KNOWLEDGE, ONLY ONE PERSON HAS THE RESPONSIBILITY. Pres. of Peace- Peace kept our cb strong worked for - & at & peace peace others for IN ALMOST TWO WEEKS, THIS COUNTRY WILL MAKE A CHOICE BETWEEN 2 CANDIDATES 2 PHILOSOPHIES 2 FUTURES, SELDOM HAS THAT CHOICE BEEN MORE STARK -- OR MORE SERIOUS. THE CHOICE WE MAKE ON ELECTION DAY CAN DETERMINE THE FUTURE OF OUR COUNTRY FOR YEARS TO COME. THE CHOICE IS CRUCIAL, THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES IS NOT ONLY THE SERVANT OF THE PRESENT, BUT ALSO THE GUARDIAN OF THE FUTURE. My HUSBAND 8. MUST CONSTANTLY ASSESS HIS ACTIONS WITH AN AWARENESS OF THE FUTURE, BECAUSE HIS ACTIONS WILL ECHO THROUGH THE YEARS -- IN THE JUDGES HE APPOINTS, THE REGULATORY BOARD MEMBERS HE NAMES, THE AGENDA HE SETS FOR THE NATION. WHEN HE SITS AS HEAD OF STATE WITH OTHER NATIONAL LEADERS, HE MUST ALWAYS BE AWARE THAT HIS EVERY WORD IS WEIGHED AND MEASURED. HE MUST BE SENSITIVE TO THEIR CONCERNS, YET ADAMANT IN THE PROTECTION OF AMERICA'S INTERESTS, As COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF, THE PRESIDENT HAS GREAT POWER, IF HE IS SKILLFUL AND WISE, PRAY GOD, HE WILL NEVER HAVE TO USE MILITARY FORCE, 9. 7 THESE ARE AWESOME RESPONSIBILITIES, AND I CAN TELL YOU FROM CLOSE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE THAT THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENCY IS VERY LONELY. WE CANNOT BESTOW THESE AWESOME RESPONSIBILITIES LIGHTLY. WE MUST REALIZE THE SERIOUSNESS OF THE DECISION THAT WE MAKE ON NOVEMBER 4TH. WE NEED YOUR CONTINUING HELP AND ON NOVEMBER 4TH, JIMMY CARTER WILL BE RE-ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND VIRGINIA THIS TIME WILL BE IN THE CARTER COLUMN!
