DRAFT
Attachment A - Page 2
"We have seen press statements from Tehran that the
Iranian Government intends to proceed with a trial of some of
the hostages. We have not yet received any formal statement
of the Iranian position from the Algerians or through any
other channel. At the present time, we will not have any
further comment beyond repeating that a trial of any of the
hostages would have the most serious consequences for Iran.
If we are officially informed that Iran has rejected
our response and threatens hostage trials:
"We have received a message through the Government
of Algeria that the Iranian Government has rejected our
response to the Majlis resolution and intends to proceed
with trial of some of our hostages.
"We have asked the Government of Algeria to convey
an immediate message to the Iranian authorities stating
such a step would have most serious consequences for Iran.
We will not have further comment until we have received a
report from the Government of Algeria after it has delivered
our message in Tehran. "
