Speeches, [10/76-11/76] Folder Citation: Collection: Office of Staff Secretary; Series: 1976 Campaign Transition File; Folder: Speeches, [10/76-11/76]; Container 2 To See Complete Finding Aid: http://www.jimmycarterlibrary.gov/library/findingaids/Staff_Secretary.pdf ccc Pat to: Governor Carter October 13 from: Pat Anderson Although it may seem premature, I suggest that you make plans to have published an edited collection of your campaign speeches. oh The Government Printing Office will routinely put out an unedited collection of everything you said, but I'm thinking of a well-edited, nicely bound collection to be issued by a major publisher. I could take charge of this if you like (assuming I am around after the election; if not, someone else could take over, but I think the process should be ga begun as soon as possible). I would suggest the following steps: First, you should be represented by a literary agent. He gets 10% of your profits, but he will more than R make up for that. I would suggest my agent, Sterling Lord, who is the best in no the business. His other clients include Ted Sorensen, Pierre Salinger, Barbara Hower, Doris Kearns, Dick Goodwin, Jimmy Breslin, etc etc. Sterling is highly respected, is a gentleman, and would never embarass you. Sterling would negotiate a contract with one of the major publishers. You should get 1) as much money as possible, even if it goes to charity, and 2) complete control over the binding, the editing, the advertising and every aspect of the book. The money is important, as a matter of principle, eveN if you give $ it to charity. I would guess you could get an advance ok in the $25,000 to $50,000 range. The publisher might or might not make money, but would want this book as a step toward your eventual memoirs. From our end, after the election, we would have to have a lot of speeches transcribed, then I or someone would have to edit out the best material, and someone would have to write oh an introduction. The editing should be imaginative; i.e., not just prepared speech texts, but also the best moments from your imprompto speech, highlights of the debates (like the closing statement from the first debate), and so on. Let me know how you feel about this. ELECTROSTATIC REPRODUCTION MADE FOR PRESERVATION PURPOSES JC -- I wanted both you and Pat to know that I'm not the one who sat on the October 13 memo and caused the mix-up. I mailed the memo to Pat as soon as I received it, which was about two weeks ago. Someone in Pat's office assumed that I had returned it after cleaning out my files and gave it to him with that notation. Returning your instruc- tions to staff and advisors is always my top priority. Maxie (I've talked to Pat.) ELECTROSTATIC REPRODUCTION MADE FOR PRESERVATION PURPOSES to: Governor Carter December 11 from: Pat Anderson I yesterday solved the mystery of a recent screw-up, and I want to pass the information along to you. On October 13, I gave you, at your home in Plains, a memo suggesting a collection of your speeches. Among other things, I suggested that you employ my literary agent, Sterling Lord. You wrote "No" in the margin beside that item. However, and this is the key to the fiasco, the memo was never returned to me -- not until yesterday, when it was sent along with a note saying Maxie had been cleaning out her mink files and thought I might want this memo. So, a day or two after the first memo, not having had a reply, I raised the question of the collection of speeches in a second memo, and you wrote in the margin "I saw it. (the first memo) Good idea. Proceed." " So there you have it. You had specifically vetoed the use of the agent -- but I didn't know that, because I never got that memo back. I got the second memo, which I took to be an endorsement of my entire proposal. The matter has been resolved now, but I was glad to learn that it was an honest misunderstanding, and I wanted you to know I had not knowingly gone against your wishes. Let me know how you feel about this. To Pat I Read 15 to: Governor Carter from: Pat Anderson You speak to the American Public Health Association on Tuesday morning. I will be drafting a speech today and tomorrow and get it to you on Sunday evening. I have plenty of material to draw from in your April 16 speech, memos from Mary King, brief Keep your previous statements, etc. My main question would be whether there are any specific proposals you can put forward in the general area of preventive health care. Please let me know if there are points you want to make on this. I will hold Emghasis prevention the speech to eight pages, and can give you all the backup material you want. Make Later that same morning, you speak to what I think will be an outdoor rally of X elderly people. I will prepare you a short, this punchy, factual statement on what Nixon-Ford have done wrong and what you will do right. Again, please tell me if there tough are any particularly points you want to make. Beyond those two speeches, Fran advises me that there are no more formal-type speeches scheduled, and you'll mainly be addressing outdoor political rallies. I will gladly withdraw from the major-speech business and devote my energies to political rhetoric. Get, Jac One thing we shold should consider at an appropriate forum is an entirely positive, vision-of-America type speech, setting out what you hope to accomplish in your first term, in legislative, Jubmit Watson diaft economic and spiritual terms. Bill Kexx Keel is on the plane. He did that excellent Litton bio oh on which you based your excellent speech last night. It would be good if you could ***** thank his him; he's done a lot of good work for us. Did you see my memo discussing a collection of your campaign speeches? When I came to your house the other night about the Liberal speech, I put it on your breakfast table. It may still be there. saw it Good ,dea Proceed [11/15/76] 1st PIPPERT 2nd Knudsen STATEMENT TO THE PRESS THE FIRST INDICATION OF THE CHARACTER OF MY ADMINISTRATION WILL BE THE QUALITY OF TOP OFFICIALS CHOSEN TO SERVE WITH ME AND SENATOR MONDALE.
