BY MR. LANE:
2
Q
I am going to ask the question again: Mr. Helms,
3
you have testified, I think, that you entered a plea to a
4
charge. I am asking now: What was the testimony that you
5
gave before the Senate Committee which led to the charge which
6
resulted in your entering a plea -- the nature of the subject
7
matter?
8
MR. SNYDER: Objection on this ground: Maybe one
of
9
you two from the Office of General Counsel can say if it
10
truly was a nolo plea. I don't think it can be used collater-
11
ally against him for any purpose. If it's a guilty plea, it
12
can. Does anybody know or willing to say?
13
His testimony up to now is that it was a nolo plea,
14
to his recollection, and I would object on the basis that it's
15
not proper under the FRE to go into that.
16
MR. STRICKLAND: Mr. Snyder, I would think that is
17
your objection to make and I think it is made for the record.
18
MR. SNYDER: Well, if you aren't willing to state
19
which it was, then in the interest of protecting myself so
20
that this testimony can be read into the record, I would ask
21
you to allow Ambassador Helms to answer that question.
22
MR. STRICKLAND: You may answer that question,
