Nitschke in the office of Mr. Jim Garrison, District Attorney on Tuesday, January 17, 1967 at approximately 1:00 p.m. My name is I. E. Nitschke. I live at 559 Focis in Metairie. My unlisted telephone number is 831-1648. My office phone at Michoud is 255-2711. During the latter part of 1961 I was contacted by William Guy Bannister, then in the private investigative business in the City of New Orleans, Louisiana. At this time Bannister invited me to participate in a bid for the security contract at the forthcoming reactivation of the Michoud assembly facility in New Orleans, Louisiana. Bannister's interest was in submitting a bid for the security as a part of the Housekeeping Program at this facility. I arrived in New Orleans about mid-November, 1961. Subsequently, Bannister and I submitted a bid through several prime contractors for the security contract at Michoud. In the interim, while we were awaiting the awarding of the Housekeeping or support services contract, I maintained a desk in Mr. Bannister's office, then situated at 531 Lafayette in New Orleans. I recall on one occasion, possibly the early part of December, 196 when I returned to Bannister's office there were several male persons then engaged in a conference with Bannister. Sub- sequently, I was invited into his office and was introduced to four or possibly five males, all of whom from appearance appeared to be of Latin extraction. I was later advised that these men were Cubans that had sought refuge in the United States. After I was introduced to these men it was explained to those present that I had been considered a firearms expert in my many years with the Federal Bureau of Investigation; that I had an excellent understanding of nomenclature and the mechanics, etc. of various types of firearms. The conversation after the introduction developed quickly into the fact that the persons in Bannister's office were interested in obtaining firearms of many varieties, mainly shoulder weapons, machine guns or semi-automatic weapons. They were interested in suppliers of this type of weapon. I recall having stated that Klein's of Chicago, Illinois, a whole- sale firearms house, would be one source; that a firm in Hollywood, California, the name of which I do not recall at the moment, were importers of many foreign types of weapons, primarily shoulder weapons and this might possibly be a source. The taller of the men that were in Bannister's office had a full head of black hair. He appeared to be between 6' and possibly 6'2" tall. His lips were full or thick. He appeared to be the 5=AR leader in the conversation. There was a short, stocky man that Page Two Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke, I estimated to weigh from 210 to possibly 230 pounds with obviously large arms and neck. The others were lighter in complexion and all definitely appeared to be Latins. I have been shown a photograph in which the subjects are numbered from 1 to 7 and bears Exhibit A, my name and the date 1/17/67. The subject identified with the numeral 3 appears extremely similar if not identical to the person I have referred to here as the shorter and heavier built of the Latins in Bannister's office. The photograph bearing Nitschke-C with the date 1/17/67 is a generally good likeness of one of the men in Bannister's office. I recall that he had a more or less hairline mustache, black hair and was perhaps as light or lighter in skin coloring than any of the others in the office. He did not appear to inject himself in the conversation but sparsely and that for the most part was in Spanish between himself and the others in Bannister's office. The conversation for the most part was directed to an individual hereinafter described as D-3 in photograph Nitschke-D dated 1/17/67. The man in photo Nitschke-D appears to have a very striking resemblance to the tall man that I have previously described. Not too long after I had entered Bannister's office, the subject D-3 took a tablet on Bannister's desk and with a pen drew a rough sketch of a silencer adaptable to a rifle. At this point subject D-3 asked me specifically if I knew where silencers could be acquired that might be attached to rifles and or machine guns. My reply to this query was in the negative. He then completed the sketch that he had started and asked if the writer had any knowledge of where silencers could be made. To this query I replied that they could perhaps be made by any welder or machinist that was capable of doing precision work; that I knew of no such person. The gist of the conversation in Bannister's office on this occasion was primarily concerned with the acquisition of, as I gathered, a reasonable quantity of weapons. The purpose for these weapons was not mentioned during my presence. Whether it was later discussed, I am not aware of. After the departure of this group, which was late in the afternoon as I recall, I was told by Bannister that the subject D-3 was exceptionally adept in guerilla warfare and guerilla-type tactics. NOTE: Here Mr. Garrison and Mr. Nitschke discussed the difference in appearance of subject D-3 from the rest of the group, remarking that it was rather unusual for a guerilla fighter to be so well dressed and well groomed. Page Three Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. I have. been shown a photograph identified as Nitschke-B with the date 1/17/67 thereupon and this is a photograph bearing New Orleans Police Department #107062. This man I met on one occasion in obview Bannister's office. Again, this was very late in the afternoon. I would say approximately 5:00 p.m. I was attracted to the physical FERRIE appearance of this man by what appeared to be false hair and/or false eyelashes and his face appeared as though he had some type of make-up thereupon. The coat that he is wearing in the photo- graph even appears similar to the one that he was wearing when I recall having met him. This man was accompanied by a smaller person in stature and apparently younger in years and the gist of his conversation with Bannister when I was introduced was to the effect that he had just returned from a trip to South America. I am not certain of the country that he had visited. The person with him at this time spoke one or two words of Spanish. The person identified in this photograph appeared to speak Spanish, in the words that he used, seemingly fluently. I do not know the purpose of the visit of this individual to Bannister's office but he did have some conversation with Bannister personally following my introduction to him. I suppose that he was possibly in the office at best about one-half hour. I have been advised that this man's name is David W. Ferrie. GARRISON: The man that you described as D-3 in Nitschke-D who is standing with the group with Lee Oswald -- is there anything else before we depart from the pictures that you can recall? He is extremely interesting from the conversation which you described and from Bannister's description of him. Did he wear, for example, jewelry of any sort? NITSCHKE: No, I don't even recall a ring. I will say this, he was neat and well-groomed in a dark suit and dark tie. GARRISON: Did he speak English? NITSCHKE: Yes. Reasonably well, too, by the way. GARRISON: Do you recall if he had a nickname? Page Four Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. NITSCHKE: No. GARRISON: Let me ask about the circumstances of the meeting with these men. Was this in the inner office? NITSCHKE: It was in Bannister's own private office. GARRISON: Did he shut the door?' NITSCHKE: Definitely. The door was definitely closed. There was only one door and it was definitely closed. GARRISON: Are any of these names of Cuban individuals familiar? Rogelio Cisceros Diaz? Also known as Eugenio. NITSCHKE: No. GARRISON: How about the nickname Toro? NITSCHKE: No. GARRISON: Manual Gonzalez? NITSCHKE: Gonzalez. Yes. Page Five Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. GARRISON: Does that name come back at all looking at Nitschke-A? NITSCHKE: Mr. Gonzalez could be possibly this "3" subject in Nitschke-A photograph here. I don't want to be positive. GARRISON: But that is your impression? NITSCHKE: Yes. GARRISON: How about the nickname Toro? NITSCHKE: No, I don't associate it. I don't know how many timesBannister had met these men previously but some of them had definitely met with him before that date. GARRISON: There was a relationship?. NITSCHKE: Yes. He had met some, if not all of them previously. GARRISON: He knew them by name? NITSCHKE: Yes. He introduced me, but meeting them only one time the names did not register. GARRISON: How about the name Juan Johnny Martin? Page Six Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. NITSCHKE: No. The name Martin is rather common. IVON: How about Layton Martens? (showing photograph) NITSCHKE: This boy, I am wondering if he was with Ferrie that afternoon. GARRISON: He was about 17 years old at that time. NITSCHKE: The boy with him wasn't too old. That looks like the boy with Ferrie. I gathered that the fellow with Ferrie had physically been with Ferrie from wherever he came from in South America. That young man looks like he could have been the man. GARRISON: Is this boy generally about the age and type? NITSCHKE: His haircut was short but whether it was a butch cut or not I do not know. This might have been the boy that was with him but I don't want to say. Nitschke-E, New Orleans Police Depart- ment photograph #105377 might possibly have been the person accompanying Ferrie on the occasion when I was in Bannister's office. IVON: Amelio Santana? (showing photograph) NITSCHKE: No. He doesn't look familiar to me. Page Seven Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. IVON: Melvin Seeling? (showing photograph) NITSCHKE: No. Not by name. He doesn't look at all familiar. No. The fellows that were in there, their hair was reasonably well-groomed. It wasn't shaggy. IVON: Miguel Torres? (showing photograph) NITSCHKE: He could have well been one of them. This fellow bears some physical resemblance to one of the men. -I am thinking about his hair. None of them were too old. (Reference here made to photo- graph Nitschke-F.) GARRISON: Didn't it seem rather odd to you after having known Guy Bannister so long and considering his background that he would be surrounded by these particular Cubans that you have described? NITSCHKE: To be frank with you, it did. They certainly were the type of people that I would not care to be associated with. GARRISON: Of those individuals you described, was there one who seemed head of all the others, as their leader, in conversation? NITSCHKE: Very positively. The one that I have identified here as D-3. Very definitely the leader of the conversation. The polished looking fellow. When he spoke the others listened. When he had the floor, they didn't interrupt him. Page Eight Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. GARRISON: Did Guy indicate in any way the Latin country with regard to D-3 and his guerilla tactics? NITSCHKE: He mentioned Cuba very definitely. In fact, Guy said, can you imagine meeting that fellow out in a dark alley somewhere. He was a wiry, dark fellow. IVON: Morris Brownlee? NITSCHKE: Not by name, no. Definitely not. IVON: (Showing picture) I do not have this man's name. NITSCHKE: No. I think there was only one or two that had a mustache and they were not this heavy. More like hairline. IVON: Miguel Mariana Cruz. (showing photograph) NITSCHKE: Association starts to bring back some reflection. There was one of these fellows as I recall that had some pimples on his face but I don't believe it was this young man here. IVON: Alvin Beaubouef. (no photograph) NITSCHKE: No. Name doesn't register. The gist of the whole thing was the acquisition of weapons and silencers. While I was in their presence that was their sole reason for being there and what was ahead of it or behind it, Page Nine Statement and interview with I. E. Nitschke. I don't know. Somewhere in that conversation, and this may not be a direct quote, money did not seem to be any object - for whatever that's worth. I might interject that after the incident I have described, Bannister advised me that it was his understanding that there would be training areas physically located in various sections of the United States and as I recall he principally mentioned the South, where exiles and people sympathetic to the Cuban pro- gram would be trained in guerilla warfare and guerilla tactics. He mentioned that the individual that I have tentatively identified in photograph Nitschke-D as D-3 was the person that would lead the training of these people. ADDENDUM: Since dictating the above I have been shown photograph Nitschke-G dated 1/17/67. This is a police photograph of Alvin R. Beaubouef. There is a very striking resemblance between this photograph and the man that I observed in Bannister's office with Ferrie, des- cribed in photograph Nitschke-B. I got the impression from the small amount of conversation that I overheard that both Ferrie and Beaubouef had within a matter of hours returned from some unknown country in South America. I am positive of the fact that they had been to some South American country, the name of which I am not positive. I. E. Nitschke Date MEMORAN UM Any Re: BANISTER June 1, 1967 TO: LOUIS IVON, Chief Investigator FROM: CLIENCY NAVARRE & KENT SIMMS, Investigators RE: Interview Mrs. Mary Helen Brengel Business - 929 Howard Avenue Third Floor Residence- 2622 Joseph Street Officers C. Navarre and K. Simms went to 929 Howard Avenue, Mathes, Bergman, Favrot & Associates, on June 1, 1967, at 2:00 P.M., and interviewed MRS. MARY HELEN BRENGEL relative to information she may have pertaining to MR. GUY BANNISTER. MRS. BRENGEL stated that she was employed by MR. GUY BANNISTER from October 15, 1963, until December 10, 1963. During this time MR. BANNISTER was using a vehicle which was the property of MRS. LANNE, the mother of JOHN LANNE. MRS. BRENGEL related that MR. LANNE would arrive at MR. BANNISTER'S office and tell MR. BANNISTER that the car needed gas or that it needed oil. And on one occasion that it needed air in the tires. MRS. BRENGEL related that it appeared this vehicle was being checked frequently because of an impending unannounced trip of some sort, MRS. BRENGEL also related that since MR. BANNISTER was separated from his wife, he had a lot of personal things stored at the office and in particular was several rifles, three or four. Now and then a MR GUYMAN would come into the office and talk to MR. BANNISTER about these rifles and they would hold them and examine them. DELPHINE ROBERTS, who was also employed in MR. BANNISTER'S office at this time, told MRS. BRENGEL that MR. GUYMAN was MR. BANNISTER'S gun expert. MRS. BRENGEL stated that during her employment there, MR. BANNISTER was dickering with the Mississippi Test Sight for the contract of guarding the facility. In attempting this, he formed a group comprised of ex-FBI men and it is believed one of them was named REGIS KENNEDY. MRS. BRENGEL further stated that the name of DAVE FERRIE came up during the time MR. BANNISTER was securing information to prevent the deportation of CARLOS MARCELLO. She could not remember any particulars about this name. MRS. BRENGEL related that the day of the assassi she and DELPHINE ROBERTS were in MR. BANNISTER'S office MR BANNISTER did not come in at all that day. DELPHINE received a phone call to inform her that the President was assassina ted and to turn on the T.V. When DELPHINE ROBERTS turned on the T.V., she jumped with joy and said "I am glad." MRS. BRENGEL stated that she had the opportunity to go into the files and could remember that they were of the FBI type containing identification of all known communists, integrationists, and Cuban exiles. Also facts and identification of persons involved in the present political picture at this time, -2- DELPHINE ROBERTS told MRS. BRENGEL that MR. BANNISTER gave her specific instructions what should be done with certain files in the event of his death. MRS. BANNISTER sold most of the files to KENT COURTNEY according to MRS. BRENGEL. MRS. BRENGEL stated that JERRY and VICKI BROWN of 1809 Robert Street observed a light in MR. BANNISTER'S office late on the night of his death. MRS. BRENGEL stated that the day of MR. BANNISTER'S death, it was a Saturday morning, DELPHINE ROBERTS tried to call him by phone and received no answer. DELPHINE ROBERTS then contacted an FBI man who accompanied her to MR. BANNISTER to find him dead. MRS. BRENGEL states that it appeared she knew before- hand and wanted a witness present. MRS. BRENGEL could not identify any names of persons involved in the probe with MR. BANNISTER. She agreed to view photos at a later date and stated she would cooperate fully with this office. DAVE was supposed to meet STEVE at the New Orleans Airport at 8:30 A.M., but he was late and didn't arrive until 9:10 A.M. Well, in his great rush, DAVE tore up his transmission and burned out his clutch. He arrived at 9:10 A.M., departed at 9:30 A.M., and arrived in Lufkum, Texas at 11:00 A.M. the same morning. He called me from Texas at 2:30 P.M. and said he would be a couple of hours late getting back and he arrived back in New Orleans at 4:55 P.M. Q. When he got back, did you talk to him? A. Yes. He said he went to pick somebody up. Q. Did he come back with somebody else? A. I suppose he did. I didn't see him arrive. Q. When did this partnership deal come about? When did it start? A. Two weeks ago. DAVE FERRIE offered me a partnership in his business, Air Marine Corporation, alias Mid- South Aviation, and I accepted the partnership. Papers are in the process of being drawn up. Q. You are going to bring the papers to a notary to have them checked? A. Yes, to make sure everything is legal in case he tries to go back on the partnership. Q. Where did you get all these names and telephone numbers? A. From FERRIE'S office while he was in Texas. Q. And also this loose-leaf paper with a diagram on it? -1- A. Out of files, 1963, a notebook of FERRIE'S in his office. Q. Describe this. What you think it looks like. A. It's a diagram of a figure of a man with his back and what could be called a bullet hole in the back of his head and right shoulder. Also, a diagram of a man side-facing with arrows pointing starting from the back coming to the front of his throat. At the top of the page there is a triangular line going up with markings 60 feet high with a line coming down, 2,500 feet long. At the bottom is a diagram of an airplane. That is all I can make out of it. Q. I am going to give you a pencil and want you to put the date on it that you got it. A. February 2? /leb 14. OSWALD'S INTERSTATE CLAIMS FOR UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION In order to receive unemployment compensation during his unemployed period, OSWALD filed Continued Interstate Claims at the Division of Employment Security, 630 Camp St., New Orleans. These claims require that you "explain what you have done to find work." Wednesday 4 Thursday 5 Friday 6 Saturday 7 Brief History of the Chain of Title of 544 Camp Street On May 9, 1851 the heirs of Benjamin Story via a notarial act passed before H.B. Cenas sold the property to Benjamin S. Story. Forty years later on June 24, 1891 Benjamin S. Story sold the property to the Crescent Encampment No. 1 of the Order of Knights of Temperence, who owned the property for 20 years until December 7, 1919 when they sold it to the Longshoremen's Benevolent Association, also known as the Stevedore's and Longshoremen's Benevolent Society. The union also owned the property for about 20 years or until March 19, 1942 when they sold it to United Building Association of New Orleans in whose possession it remained for the next 17 years. Throughout the property transfers the corner lot is referred to by either or both of its municipal addresses: Camp St. and 529-533 Lafayette St. The lot at issue (3rd Tax Assessment District, Square 164, Lot D) is on the corner of Camp and Lafayette Streets. The square is bounded by Poydras, Magazine, Lafayette, and Camp. We know that the Lafayette and Camp Street addresses belong to the same property not only because the property descriptions, i.e. "metes and bounds" and the square footage, match from act to act whether either R both addresses are used, but also because there is no subdivision plan filed, which would indicate that the lot had been divided. On August 6, 1959 in an act before Irving Novick, Notary United Building Association of New Orleans sold 544 Camp St. to Oscar J. Friedmann for $32,500.00 cash. On that same date and before the same notary, Oscar J. Friedmann sold the property to Capital Gains, Inc. for $50,000.00 on terms. Capital Gains, Inc. was a relatively new corporation, incorporated on July 15, 1969 in an act before the same notary, Irving Novick. Capital's shareholders were: 1. William C. Copping - 20 shares 516 Delta Bldg. 348 Baronne St. New Orleans, LA -2- 2. Mrs. Louana Buzbee - 1 share 822 Perdido Street (Irving Novick's address) 3. Sidney de Armas - 1 share 822 Perdido Street (Probably Novick's law partner) Capital's directors were Copping, Buzbee, and Joseph E. LeMieux (at Copping's address). On August 25, 1960 in an act before James P. Grevemberg, Oscar J. Friedmann, Capital Gains, Inc. via its agent, Louis A. DiRosa sold the property to Sam Newman for $35,000.00 - 6221.00 cash and the balance on terms. The property addresses are 544 Camp St. and 529-31-33 Lafayette St. The act also indicates that Sam Newman was married and lived at 1337 Mithra Street. On July 12, 1965, Sam Newman sold the property to Fidelity Homestead for $58,000.00 cash. The act was passed before Allain C. Andry (now the President of Fidelity Homestead). On that same date and before Allain C. Andry again, the property was sold to Hughes J. de la Vergne II, never married 2314 Jefferson Avenue, Charles Edouard de la Vergne, never married 427 Walnut, and Louis Victor de la Vergne, never married 427 Walnut for $34,800.00 terms. Apparently, the Homestead lost over $20,000.00 on the sale, but Fidelity lost much more. On March 7, 1973 Judge Edward J. Boyle of the Federal District Court granted a joint motion filed by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Gerald Gallinghouse, via Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert N. Habans, Jr. and by the attorney for the de la Vergnes, Ralph L. Kaskell, Jr. of DKS. The joint motion sold the property to the U.S. Government for $141,162.50. It is indeed ironic that the Federal government chose to erect its building, named the Hale Boggs Building in honor of that member of the Warren commission who disappeared in a plane over Alaska, on the site of the 544 Camp St. building. Re: BANISTER PLAY for CUDA PAMPHLETS MEMORANDUM FAIR DISPOSITION FILES of DELPHINE RODERTS May I, 1967 - Dictated TO: JIM GARRISON, District Attorney FROM: ANDREW J. SCIAMBRA, Assistant District Attorney RE: MRS. MARY BANISTER INTERVIEW WITH April 29th and 30th, 1967 I traveled to Monroe, Louisiana to talk to Mrs. MARY BANISTER in connection with the files her husband GUY BANISTER was keeping in the course of his investigative work. Mrs. BANISTER told me that after he husband died Mrs. DELPHINE ROBERTS and her daughter took some files from GUY BANISTER's apartment and also from GUY BANISTER's office and turned them over to Mr. G. WRAY GILLS GILL. She also said that she believes these files were in reference to an investigation concerning DAVID FERRIE and his case with Eastern Airlines. She stated that she later on called Mr. GILL and asked him to return these files to her and he did not do SO. She said that she does not know what happened to these files. Mrs. BANISTER went on to say that she also burned some files because she felt, in her opinion, that these files should be destroyed as they might hurt some innocent people; that these files did not contain anything in regards to Communist or anti-Communist group activities. Mrs. BANISTER told me that about 1 or 2 days after her husband's death she did go to his office in an attempt to prevent anyone from taking these files and discovered that some files had already been taken. The old man who lived above BANISTER's office told her that he had seen ROBERTS: DELPHONE ROBERTS and her daughter take some files while her daughter and a boliceman, was present. PAMMHLNTS: FPCC She said that the only thing she could say in regard to OSWALD's Fair Play for Cuba Committee was that she saw some Fair Play For Cuba leaflets in BANISTER's office when she went there after his death. Mrs. BANISTER said she threw them away in the wastebasket. Mrs. BANISTER told me that because she was in such financial difficulties she sold many of her husband's files to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, and she gave some MCC: to the State Sovereignty Commission, and she also gave some to the State Police. She said that she also gave a complete index card catalogue, which was a record of every investigation that her husband was involved in, to the State Police. Mrs. BANISTER said that she had never heard her husband speak of the Friends of Cltainil by Cuba or Voice of Cuba or SERGIO ARCACHA SMITH, BILL DALZELL, OR N.O.D.AS office) CARLOS QUEROGA. She said that the name REGIS KENNEDY is familiar to her probably because I told her he is an F.B.I. Agent. I looked over the books which Mrs. BANISTER had, which were in her husband's library, and these were text books on various subjects which did not pertain to any investigation. She told me that she had donated other text books to the New Orleans Public Library, Northeastern State College, and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Mrs. BANISTER emphasized the point that she did not want to get involved in any way, and that if anyone did ask her if she had talked to anyone from the District Attorney's Office, she would say that she had not. However, Mrs. BANISTER did say that she would like to help us in any way she could but that she would like to help us on a confidential basis. ANDREW J. SCIAMBRA AJS/leb you UTI OFFICE OF THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY PARISH OF ORLEANS STATE OF LOUISIANA RE: (1) BANISTER (2) LO "ESCORT" DECEMBER 29, 1966 STATEMENT OF: JOSEPH A. OSTER, WM, age 38 RESIDING AT: 809 Audubon TELEPHONE NO. 525-4205 STATEMENT In about 1956, Guy Banister and I went in business together in the private investigating firm known as Guy Banister and Associates, Inc. At that time, we were in the Balter Building on St. Charles Street in New Orleans. During the course of time I was in business with Banister, I met Jack Martin and others. Subsequently, I left Banister and formed my own corporation in 1958. It was known as Southern Research Company, Inc. now Joseph A. Oster and Associates, Inc. During the time I was in business with Banister, I had occasion to visit his home on Argonne Blvd. At that time, Banister had to my knowledge a number of rifles and also a 357 Magnum. I can vaguely remember that he had a .30 caliber bolt action rifle also a shotgun, also an over and under, I don't know what caliber. The .30 caliber bolt action had a telescopic sight. I know Banister carried a 357 magnum with gold initials (I think the initials were WGB). What happened to these guns, I don't know. During the course of my friendship with Banister, from the middle of 62 to the end of '63, I met Joe Newbrough, ALL Bill Ninski, Delphene Roberts, Jack Martin, and I was introduced -2- to Dave Ferrie and two Cuban exiles. I don't remember their names. One I know was employed in the Audubon Building for an engineering firm on the 5th floor. He was tall, thin, Jorge Ramirez Engineer for Warren moses 529 277) dark hair, and I vaguely remember he was a draftsman or some kind of engineer. He was approximately 30 to 32 years old. At the time I met them, they were driving an old Ford. The other Cuban was short, stocky, moustache and appeared to be highly educated. He was about 45 years old. When Banister introduced me to them, he told me they were Cuban exiles and had been run out of Cuba by Castro. He also told me they were the heads of some kind of exile movement here in New Orleans, and they were trying to get some kind of program started. I remember one time Banister was telling me about some automobile parts and heavy equipment being sent to Cuba in violation of a State Department band against the export of equipment to Cuba. He was investigating it for somebody. He told me it was in violation of the State Depart- ment's band and he left me with the impression it was jeeps, and sugar refinery equipment. For some reason I remember the name Dibert, Bancroft, and Roth at Tulane and South Jefferson Davis. This comes in somewhere, I don't remember exactly where. He told me he had pictures of this stuff and mentioned the name of the wharf where it was. He also told me he could take me and show me the equipment that was going to Cuba. I remember he told me that he had pictures of this equipment and but I don't remember if he told me Newbrough did take them or was going to take them. He called and asked me about a camera, but I didn't have the kind he wanted. So, the next time I saw him, Newbrough was in the office along with Martin, Dave Ferrie, and Dave Lewis. Delphene Roberts was the secretary. Bill Ninski was in the other room. This was on -3- Lafayette Street. We went around to the restaurant and New- brough told me he had taken some pictures for Banister. What they were, I don't know. I think Newbrough or Martin the mentioned jeeps to me. Subsequently, I ran into one of the Cubans I was introduced to in Banister's Office in my own office building and I would see him coming in and out of the elevator, and I asked him if he had seen Banister and he said, "No, I'm not fooling with that anymore." I haven't seen this Cuban for about four months now. This particular unknown Cuban was watching Oswald pass out these pamphlets in front of Maison Blanche, Kress, and the Audubon Building. (sic) I remember - Anna Birdglass was also in and out check of Banister's Office during this same period. photo of possible "escort Unarged letter Re: (1) BANISTER (2) CUBAN Banister Calm Banesher, EXILES Openation For: Redigult, Friends of Denr. SD I WENT IN TO INFORM THESE PEOPLE THAT CUBA WAS NOT A DEMOCRATIC BUT A DICTATORIAL NATION. I STEPPED INTO THE MOSTUNUSUAL SITUATION I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. SUPPOSEDLY, THIS ORGANIZATION AND ITS PEOPLE WERE COLLECTING CLOTHING, F000, MONEY AND NEOICAL SUPPLIES, ETC, FOR CUBAN REFUGEES WHO WERE CONING OVER TO THE U.S. THE ORGANIZATION JAS IN EFFECT, I LEARNED SHORTLY, A FRONT FOR THE SCHEME OF AN INVASION OF CUBA AND THIS WAS ONE OF THEIR HEADQUARIERS. HE HAD SOME KIND OF DELUSTIONS OF GRANDEUR ABOUT OBTAINING A HIGH OFFICE IN CUSA AFTER THE CAS730 OVERTHROW. WHEN THE FIRST PLAN FOR INVASION DIDN'T MATERIALIZE (THERE WAS THREE SUCH WHILE I WAS THERE) HE SUGGESTED A WILD SCHEAE TO ORGANIZE A "DLACK BRIGARD" OF ANTI COMMUNIST BANDIDOS, WHICH WAS TO BE NAMED "BANNISTER'S BASTARDS" AND WERE TO FIGHT SOUTH AND CENTRAL AMERICAN COMMUNIST CUERRILAS ANYWHERE AND EVERYWHERE, FOR PAY FROM GOVERNMENTS OF COUNTRIES. HE CAME INTO THE OFFICE ALONE MOST OF THE TIME BUT SOMETIMES ME HAD OTHER MEN WITH HIM. THOUGH MIS NATURE WAS NOT NEARLY AS EXPLOSIVE AS THE LATINS THERE, SOME OF HIS IDEAS WERE WILD TO SAY THE LEAST. AN INTERESTING POINT. AS WELL AS I CAN REMEMBER HID, HE LOOKED A GREAT DEAL LIKE THE PICTURES I HAVE SEEN OF CLAY SHAW! ONE OF THE DISGRUNTLED CUSANS I BE CANE ACQUAINTED WITH WAS SERGIO - CAN'T REMEMBER HIS LAST NAME - IT WAS SOMETHING LIKE ARCADIS. HE WAS ALWAYS INVAGULATELY DRESSED IN A BLUE SUIT, WELL SHAVEN AND ALOOF. HE WAS THE CHIEF SPIRIT IN NEW ORLEANS FOR THE ORGANIZATION OF THE INVASION. MOST OF HIS COHORTS WERE EVIDENTLY 07 THE SAME SOCIO ECONOMIC LEVEL, USED TO COMMAND AND WANTED THEMSELVES TO ES CHIEF. THEREFORE THEY COULD NOT SEEM TO BE ORGANIZED. I REMEMBER THAT ONE OF HIS PLANS WAS TO HAVE A FLOAT 111 THE MARDI GRAS PARADE CONSISTING OF À LARGE CUBAN FLAG - 2 BED SHEET SIZE are ON A FLOAT BED IN THIS MANNER - - WITH POINTING SUPERIUPOSED TO THE EFFECT THAT PEOPLE THROW COINS ACAINST THE FLAG WHICH TOULD THEN FALL ONTO THE BEO OF THE FLOAT TO BE COLLECTED TO AID IN FREEING CUBA. JOSE DEL HAYA (THE MOST IMPORTANT FIGURE OF THE GROUP) ALMOST DID BATTLE IN THE OFFICE. I HAVE HEARD NOTHING OF DR. JOSE DEL HAYA IN YOUR INVESTIGATIONS. HE WAS THE NOBLEST ROMAN OF THEM ALL, WAS SINCERE AND MOST PERSONABLE. HE WAS SLIGHT OF BUILD, ABOUT THIRTY YEARS OF AGE, REFINED, INTELLIGENT AND THE ONLY ONE OF THE GROUP OF PERHAPS TWENTY PEOPLE IN THE GROUP THAT WAS OF VALUE. HE TOLD ME ME HAD BEEN WITH THE STUDENT REVOLT OF 1.953 III CUBA AND WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED. ME FOUGHT WITH CASTRO ON HIS SIDE, BUT DISAOSEED WITH HIM POLITICALLY. HE TOLD ME HE WAS SENT TO THE U.S. BY CASTRO AFTER CASTRO'S VICTORY, TO CARNER PUBLIC SUPPORT. HE WAS RECALLED AND IMPRISONED WHEN HE QUESTIONED THE POST REVOLUTION PURGES. HE ESCAPED, CAME TO THE U.S. AND WAS STRIVING TO ATTAIN RECOGNITION BY THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOC. AT THE SOME TIVE, HE WAS TRYING TO CET COMPANIES WITH INDUSTRIES WHICH WERE NATIONALIZED BY CASTRO TO CONTRIBUTE FUNDS FOR HIS OVERTH900. HE WAS A MAN OF PASSION AND COMPASSION DE010ATED TO HIS PEOPLE. THE LAST I HEARD OF HIM, HE WAS IN OKLAHOMA CITY WORKING IN A HOSPITAL. IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING OF HIM, TRY TO FIND HIU. I AM SURE HE KNOUS AND CAN CONTRIBUTE MUCH KNOWLEDGE TO YOUR INVESTICATION. I DON'T KNOW WHO HE REALLY WAS. I USED TO ACCOMPANY HIM ON SOME STRANGE MISSIONS WHICH HE VOULD NOT EXPLAIN AND AFTER THE CIA TIE WAS EXPOSED AT THE BAY OF PIOS, I DEGAN TO WONDER IF ANY OF THESE PEOPLE MEBEREAL. BLOND, SHIRT AND THE TYPE WITH SOME COLLEGE AND A GREAT CAPACITY TO DEAL WITH EXPLOSIVE LATIN NATURES. HIS CLOSEST COHORT WAS A MAN WHO REMINDED ME OF GENE KELLY (ACTOR) IN APPEARANCE BUT WAS MENTALLY BACKWARD, HE CLAIMED TO HAVE JUST ESCAPED TO THE U.S. FROM 1 PRISON IN VERA CRUIZ, WHERE HE AND SEVERAL CONFEDERATES HAD BEEN IMPRISONED FOR BEING CAUGHT WITH A LOAD OF GUNS 3 WHICH WERE HEADED FOR GUATEMALA. THEN THERE WAS BILLI WHOEVER HE WASS HE LOOKED LIKE A POOR MAN'S CLARK CABLE WITH TWENTY EXTRA POUNDS. A THEATRICAL CENERAL WHO LIKED TO SIT BENIND A DESK WITH PAPERS AND PEN IN MAND WITH OVERLY DRAWATIZED EXPRESSION OF MEDITATION AND CONCERN. HE WANTED TO BE A COUMANDER IN THE FIELD OF THE COUNTER REVOLUTIONARIES AND STOICLY DISREGARD THE PRAISE OF THE FREED MULTITIDE AS HE BORE THE WEIGHT OF THE OFFICE OF FREEDOM, AS LONO AS IT WASN'T DANGEROUS OR REQUIRED NO REAL RESPONSIBILITY. I REMEMBER HE WAS LIVING OFF AND ON WITH A VERY HEAVY BLOND WOMAN III THE QUARTER WHO WORE WHITE AS IF SHE WERE A NURSE. HER NAME WAS DEITY, SHE ONCE CALLED THE OFFICE Forrett? AND SAID SHE HAD FOUND A NOTE IN THE GARBAGE CAN INDICATING THAT BILL WAS A DOUBLE AGENT*. A GIRL WHO CLAIMED TO BE FROM COLUMBIA NAMED CHRISTINA CAME INTO THE OFFICE FREQUENTLY, STRUCK A RELATIONSHIP WITH TICER JIII AND THEY BECAME ENOAGED. SHE WAS A DEVOUT PATRIOT TO LATIN FREEDOM AND STAUNCHLY SUPPORTED THE CASTRO OVERTHROM. HOWEVER, SHE WAS REFINED AND EDUCATED SOMEWHAT AND NOVED THROUGH AT DOD ANDLES IF THAT BAKES SENSE, NOT FITTING AT ALL WITH THE OVERALL EARTHY, CARNAL GROUP TYPE CAST. SHE WAS MORE OF DEL HAYA'S CLASS ... I REMEMBER THAT WE WENT OVER TO VISIT HER ONCE AND ALL EVENING THERE WAS CONVERSATION IN DOUBLE TALK. I AM SURE IT WAS NOT THAT OF SEDUCTION AROUND ^ THIRD PERSON EITHER. THERE WAS A FELLOW CALLED ROSIE. HE WAS UNCLEAN, LETHARGIC OF MIND AND LETHAL. THOUGH HE SEENED DULL EYED AND DULL WITTED, HE WOULD AT THE SAME TIME DO LITTLE THINGS THAT REQUIRED VIT. HE WANTED ME TO 00 ON A LITTLE THIP WITH HIM TO BRAZEL WHERE WE WERE TO PICK UP A QUANTITY OF UNCUT STONES WHICH WOULD THEN BE DROPPED ON A REEF AT THE EDGE OF U.S. TERRITORIAL WATERS TO BE PICKED UP BY DIVERS AND SUUGGLED INTO THE U.S. WE WOULD SPLIT $50,000.00 FOR IT. I WAS THE ONLY ONE HE TRUSTED. ON TWO OCCASIONS, AN ALOOF, REFINED, HANDSOME YOUNG CUBAN CAME IN, WHO WAS NAMED FRANCESCO SOMETHING. HIS FATHER WAS AROUND OFTEN AND HAD FOUGHT FOR CUDAN UNITY AND FREEDOM SEVERAL TIMES. EACH TIME FRANCESCO WAS TO ARRIVE, THERE WAS MUCH HULCABALLOO. BY CAR WAS USED TO PICK HIM UP AT THE AIRPORT. OF LITTLE VALUE BUT ALWAYS THERE WAS A MENTALLY RETARDED MAN NAMED JERRY. IN REFERENCE TO ALL THE ABOVE NAMED PEOPLE, I AM SORRY THAT I CANNOT REMEMBER THEIR FULL NAMES, BUT I COULD IDENTIFY MOST OF THEIR PHOTOS AND RECALL MORE DETAILS ON EACH OF THEM AND OTHERS. IF YOU THINK THAT I COULD BE OF HELP, PLEASE WRITE A LETTER TO PLAYSOY MAGAZINE, STATING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO TALK WITH THE GUY FROM UP NORTH. 1. WOULD CONTACT YOU DIRECTLY BUT IT IS TOO DANGEROUS. MEMORANDUM Re: FERRIE January 11, 1967 TO: LOUIS IVON, INVESTIGATOR FROM: LYNN LOISEL, INVESTIGATOR RE: PHONE CALL FROM JIMMY JOHNSON REGARDING FERFIE AND THE SMITH CASE (January 10, 1967, 4:00 P. M.) It is to be noted that Jimmy Johnson who was once a close associate of Ferrie, but broke free from Ferrie but as a favor for this office, renewed his friendship with Ferrie for information purposes for this office. Jimmy stated that Ferrie had contacted Pershing the other day in regards to the Cuban woman's name that was mentioned in the Saturday Evening Post article. That Ferrie had called a lawyer (name unknown) last night which would be January 9, 1967, and spoke with the lawyer about his being investigated by this office. Details of conversation unknown. Ferrie has a lot of old army paraphernalia in his apartment, such as, walkie talkies, incendiary bombs, etc. Ferrie was showing nude pictures (moving films) to two young boys and a district police car shined a light on his front porch and he really became frightened and uncontrol- lable, telling Jimmy that the police must suspect him. He continuously complains of being sick and knows that he is going to die soon. Agent #1 stated the parnership he and FERRIE has is not working out. He has been working with FERRIE and FERRIE will not pay him any money. He stated that he got into a heated argu- ment with FERRIE on Wednesday, February 8, 1967, because he needed $90.00 to pay his rent. After threatening to "kick the shit" out of him (quote from Agent #1), DAVE FERRIE brought $45.00 to Agent #1's wife, and promised to give the rest to him later on that day. When Agent #1 insisted on the rest of his money, DAVE FERRIE told him he didn't have it and couldn't get it for him now because he was going home, that he was not feeling well and didn't want to argue any more. FERRIE stated he was going to straighten everything out in the next day or so (meaning his business) and then kill himself. While in the District Attorney's Office, Agent #1 was requested to telephone DAVE FERRIE and have a friendly conversa- tion with him so as not to break up their relationship. Agent #1 stated that this was no problem because DAVE FERRIE was in love with him. The call was made and arrangements were made to have Agent #1 pay a friendly visit to DAVE FERRIE. /leb Fill Indiated MEMORANDUM (Copy & * Richard Benns November 7, 1967 Ra: CUBANS (general) Ra: BANISTER Rs: CARLOT QUIROZA TO: JIM GARRISON, District Attorney Note: Apparently Newman Cuban rented Climing to FDI FROM: TOM BETHELL 544 Camp Street to on 2 occasions: (1) oct '61 they FEB 162 RE: Unidentified men at 544 Camp Stree For an period beginning (2) "MARCH APRIL (But contradute etatement to 5/5 Summary of interviews with SAM NEWMAN he this any 544 not teat to Cuband Signature (62) gs 1. 11/23/63 S.A. NEWMAN related that he had rented office space to "Cuban revolutionaries" over a period of three or four months, but that he had evicted them because they got behind on the rent. After he had evicted these revolutionaries, he discovered that "an unknown subject (white; male; 22/24; 5'9'2'2"; 185 lbs.; fair complexion; light brown hair; spoke with Spanish accent) had moved into the space in the building vacated by the Cubans without notifying him. NEWMAN only saw him once "and had no idea as to what his name might be." NEWMAN gives no indication of the date of this encounter (either month or year). According to the same Secret Service report (CE 3119), one JAMES ARTHUS ("apparently harmless protective Research subject of file CC-2-32, 791") at 544 Camp Street who "stated that an unknown man had attempted to rent an office at 544 Camp Street, but that he discouraged him." 2. In his interview with the FBI, NEWMAN advised that he rented the office space to the Cubans "approximately 8 or 9 months ago, i.e. March or April 1963 He added that he did not recollect seeing OSWALD in or around the building, nor had he rented any office space to the FPCC, or anyone by the name of OSWALD. Someone called him, in September 1963, however, wanting to rent office space, but NEWMAN did not see this individual, as he put him in touch with the aforementioned JAMES ARTHUS the janitor. NEWMAN added that "9 or 10 months ago" (Jan. or Feb. 1963) a tall, thin man, aged about 38, with dark hair, did contact him and paid one month's rent for an office, which he was going to use to teach Spanish. This is presumably not the same man NEWMAN had mentioned two days earlier to the Secret Service, whom NEWMAN does not mention in this interview. R6:CARLOS QUIROGA 1. He stated the location as well as he could remember was at Big Branch Louisiana on Highway 190 in a small cottage off the Highway. This was checked out and this house could possibly be on Pontchartrain Drive at Big Branch off 190. There are a group of houses on this road. Any further information in regards to the above Lt. Hudgeons was instructed to call Ivon, Sedgebeer or Jonau. In reference to training area in St. Tammany no one we talked with knew of any training grounds in that area. GOLDSMITH's name was given to this office by BARBARA REED. I interviewed GOLDSMITH at his apartment at 6:00 pm on February the 29th , 1968. Between November 1962 and February 1964, GOLDSMITH worked for the BOEING COMPANY which had its offices at 225 Baronne St. While working for the BOEING CO., GOLDSMITH lived at either 512 or 517 St. Louis St. ( GOLDSMITH can not remember the address) for 3 months, Nov. 1962 thru Jan. 1963. GOLDSMITH then moved to 322 Exchange Place in February of 1963 and remained there until February 1964. GOLDSMITH first met KERRY THORNLEY at either the Bourbon House or at the Ryder Coffee House. GOLDSMITH frequented the Ryder Coffee House and IVAN's discussion sessions and knows such people as BARBARA REED, JACK FRAZIER, JACK BURNSIDES, JOHN KAMAS, ROSS BUCKLEY, HELEN GLADSTONE and WILLIAM BRADY. GOLDSMITH says that when he met THORNLEY, THORNLEY attempted to get into a political discussion with GOLDSMITH. GOLDSMITH said that if they were going to be friends they would have to refrain from discussing politics (GOLDSMITH says that this was because THORNLEY was a right-winger, while he was a left-winger). GOLDSMITH said that discussing politics was "one of his (THORNLEY) toys". GOLDSMITH described THORNLEY as very far right and in every conversation THORNLEY was " going to be the arch conservative". GOLDSMITH says that THORNLEY never mentioned LEE HARVEY OSWALD before the Assassination. GOLDSMITH never saw OSWALD at any time either with THORNLEY or alone. GOLDSMITH said that he knew THORNLEY was writing a book about his experiences in the Marine Corps. THORNLEY told GOLDSMITH the book was pattered after some- one. THORNLEY had known in the service (THORNLEY did not indicate whom). GOLDSMITH said that he and THORNLEY used to sit around trying to think up a title for THORNLEY's book. GOLDSMITH says that the night of the Assassination, THORNLEY went into the Bourbon House (GOLDSMITH was present) and said, " have you heard the good news". After the Assassination THORNLEY MEMORANDUM PAGE 2 RE: BERNARD GOLDSMITH told GOLDSMITH that he had known OSWALD in the Marines. GOLDSMITH says that since he had a secret clearance be descided not to see THORNLEY anymore. The last time GOLDSMITH saw THORNLEY was in January of 1964. GOLDSMITH says that he never loaned THORNLEY any money, but if he did THORNLEY must have paid it back. GOLDSMITH met WILLIAM BRADY at IVAN's discussion sessions. GOLDSMITH said of BRADY, " he turns me off,( refering to the fact that BRADY was gay). When I asked GOLDSMITH what he thought of BRADY, he replied, # he (BRADY) struck me as somehow dangerous", "something wasn't right about him (BRADY)". GOLDSMITH describes BRADY as # radical, extremist, violent segregationist and some- what gay". GOLDSMITH did not like BRADY because of the afore- mentioned "qualities" and thusly did not associate with him. GOLDSMITH says that BRADY actually became violent at some of the meetings at IVAN's and that BRADY never missed a chance to jump on a soap box to denounce something or someone. GOLDSMITH was very cooperative and said that if this office had any further questions he would be available. Gary Sanders CC: Andrew Sciambra GMS/gs Re: FERRIE MEMORANDUM SSN March 3, 1967 TO: JIM GARRISON, DISTRICT ATTORNEY FROM: JULIAN R. MURRAY, JR., ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY RE: KENNEDY ASSASINATION INVESTIGATION On March 2, 1967, a MR. LOUIS JONES who is a victim in a case which I am prosecuting in Section "B" came in to give some information which he thought might be useful to our office. I was unable to tell whether or not this information would be of any value, but I thought I should pass it along to you for what- ever it's worth. MR. JONES explained to me that his father is an invalid and it is therefore necessary that his mother, MRS. WILLIAM B. JONES, hire male nurses to stay with him at all times. Somewhere in January of 1965 they hired a male nurse who stayed with them for about two months. MRS. JONES recalls that when she hired this subject, he had a letter of recommendation from a person who pur- ported to be either a psychiatrist or a psychologist whose last name was FERRIE and who lived on Louisiana Avenue Parkway. The subject whom she hired gave the name of JIMMIE JOHNSON and at the time he informed her that he was living with MR. FERRIE at his apartment on Louisiana Avenue Parkway. She said that she could not remember much about this subject except that he was very effeminate. She still has her cancelled check with which she paid him his salary in January of 1965, and she also has his social security number which was 420-56-5635. MR. JONES requests that if anyone in our office cares to speak with his mother about this matter, that we contact him first. He pointed out that she was an elderly person with a heart condition and he is afraid that a lot of questioning would greatly upset her unless he were present. R:JHAW MEMORANDUM Re: THORNLEY TO: LOUIS IVON, Chief Investigator FROM: GARY SANDERS, Investigator SUBJECT: VIRGINIA JOHNSON CLAY SHAW'S MAID 6434 N. Derbigny St. 279-7228 The following information was obtained from an interview conducted at the home of VIRGINIA JOHNSON on the 15th of January, 1968 between 8:20 PM and 9:30 PM. Miss Jody Duek took the notes at this meeting which were used to write this report. KERRY THORNLEY'S CANDLORD AT TIME OF ASSASSINATION MRS. VIRGINIA JOHNSON, Social Security Number 434-36-5071, worked for CLAY SHAW for about 9 years. She quit during Hurricane "Betsy" because her home had been flooded. Mrs. JOHNSON is now employed by JACK SPENCER ( JOHN R. SPENCER 1805 Esplanade St. ,943-8236) on Mondays and Thursdays from 9 AM to 5 PM. Mrs. JOHNSON did not recognize the name KERRY THORNLEY and the only time she ever worked at 1824 Dauphine St. was when she cleaned up an upstairs apartment. Mrs. JOHNSON has worked for SPENCER since "Betsy" and she gave no reason for having left the employment of CLAY SHAW. She has also worked for the " Plantation Home " in the French Quarter. Mrs. JOHNSON said that she had made the black robe and hood for SHAW before Mardi Gras of 1959 or 1960 and she would press these garments before each Carneval season. Mrs. JOHNSON said she would recognize someone if they had visited SHAW, but she admitted she did not see many of his visitors. She said SHAW was always very nice to her and always treated her well. She was very surprised to hear that SHAW had been arrested. Mrs. JOHNSON said she had never heard the name BERTRAND and had never seen any letter addressed to CLAY BERTRAND at the Dauphine Street address. ( Check memo on VIRGINIA JOHNSON relating to an interview with persons at Balthazor Fabric Store on Franklin Ave. were witnesses state that Mrs. JOHNSON did see a letter addressed to CLAY BERTRAND, 1313 Dauphine St. New Orleans, La.) Mrs. JOHNSON describes her encounter at Balthazor Fabrics as a laughing and Joking session in which she and some of the salesladies talked about SHAW and the fact that she had worked for him and had made his black robe and hood. Mrs. JOHNSON says that she did see JACK SPENCER at SHAW'S house , but never the reverse. She said that both SPENCER's and SHAW's dogs were the same breed, Weimaraner. Mrs. JOHNSON said SHAW was visited by a Mr. J.B. or J.C. on many occasions. This individual was employed at the International Trade Mart and his last name began with a "D". One person that visited SHAW was a MISS LYONS, an older woman who had grey hair, but was still very attractive. Most of the women who visited SHAW were elderly and the men were generally in their twenties. VIRGINIA JOHNSON January 16,1968 page 2 I showed Mrs. JOHNSON my picture file and she did seem to recognize LAYTON MARTENS and TOMMY COX mainly from the general description of " light hair and skinny ". She did not remember seeing any Cubans at SHAW's house and never saw FERRIE, OSWALD or any other persons that have been publicized on tele- vision. Mrs. JOHNSON's working schedule was daily and she would arrive at SHAW's at about 3 PM when she would clean the apartment and prepare SHAW's dinner at about 5PM. She generally left between 5 and 6 PM so she was not in a position to have known who SHAW had as visitors during the evening hours. One year ( unknown ) when Mrs. JOHNSON went on a two week vacation, SHAW hired a ONELL BELL ( 1815 Delery St. 279-6647 ) for 2 weeks to take her place. When Mrs. JOHNSON returned she said SHAW had been very dissatisfied with Mrs. BELL, but he did not say why. The method that SHAW used to pay MRS. JOHNSON is also very interesting since on the surface it looks as though SHAW may have been using some illegal tax deductions. SHAW paid VIRGINIA JOHNSON $35.00 a week by check made out to her. SHAW also gave her a check for $20.00 a week, also made out to her, for groceries and other items for the house. This is a total of $55.00 a week that Shaw could claim on his income tax as salary paid to MRS. JOHNSON MRS. JOHNSON asked SHAW about this arrangement and he said he was paying her Social Security so she did not have to worry. It might be interesting to find out if he was claiming the $55.00 per week as a deduction rather than the $35.00 a week. Re: SHAW ( Bernadas Weise) MEMORANDUM May 5, 1969 TO: JIM GARRISON, District Attorney' FROM: ANDREW J. SCIAMBRA, Assistant District Attorney RE: SHAW LEADS II FILE (MAX HILL LEAD) Lt. Fred Soule and I interviewed JULES WEISS and MIKE BERNADAS in regard to OSWALD coming into their store in 1963 (July) seeking employment. WEISS informed me that OSWALD just walked into his store one day seeking a job as a photographer. WEISS said that he never did introduce himself and merely said that he had experience in photography and was seeking work in that field. WEISS said that he told him that he did not need any help and referred him to MAX HILL and JACK BEACH, 709 Royal Street. WEISS said that OSWALD thanked him and before he left asked him for fifty cents. WEISS said that this surprised him because OSWALD was neat and did not look like a panhandler. He said OSWALD did not ask for full-time employment but said that he was looking for part-time work to hold him over. WEISS said that he never told anyone about this incident as it was quite insignificant. He said that after the assassination he recognized OSWALD's picture as the person who came into his store looking for a job, however, he said that he still didn't tell anyone about this incident. WEISS said that sometime in early December, the FBI came to his place of business and asked him if OSWALD had tried to get a job from him. He told the FBI that he thought that the person whom he had talked to was OSWALD, but that OSWALD never introduced himself. The FBI told him that they knew it was OSWALD because OSWALD had used BERNADAS & WEISS as a reference on one of his job applications. The FBI said that OSWALD had put on the application that he worked there for three months. WEISS said that he gave the FBI the same story that he gave us and said that the FBI thanked him and that was the last he heard about the matter. We then talked to BERNADAS and BERNADAS was not working there at the time and therefore could be of no help in this matter. WEISS informed us that he knows CLAY SHAW from seeing him around the Quarter and that on two occasions SHAW came to a book review party that he had given for two authors. C. JOHNSON - After returning from Ft. Worth with Bill Boxley on Thursday, August 24, 1967, Boxley and I visited 1026 N. Beckley Avenue, where we interviewed Mrs. A. C. JOHNSON. As she was preparing supper we stayed only a short time to avoid antagonizing her in case we wanted to see her again. She furnished the information that OSWALD would use the pay telephone in thehall "2 or 3 times a day" and would speak Russian. She told us that OSWALD kept his room neatly despite the fact that he ate make-shift meals in there. She added that she was surprised that they discovered a pistol holster in his room and then went on to explain that of course she never would do such a thing as to look through his dresser drawers. It was clear to Boxley and I that she obviously had looked through his things, otherwise, she would have had no basis for being surprised at the discovery of the holster. Mrs. JOHNSON also said that in the turmoil in OSWALD's room following the assassination, one of the curtain rods was bent or pulled down by a detective. It was noted that access to OSWALD's room is via the main living room, where residents frequently sit and watch television. In other words, OSWALD did not have a private entrance to his room. (Former owner of Newman Bldg., 544 Camp St.) I interviewed Mr. Sam Newman at 1:30 P.M. on January 18, 1967 with regard to Guy Banister & Associates and the "Free Cuban Movement". Mr. Newman told me at this time that he didn't have any of his records as he had given all of them to the F.B.I. and the U. S. Secret Service. Mr. Newman asked me whether or not the Office of the District Attorney or I was investigating the death of President Kennedy. I told him it was something stemming from this. He then told me he had heard about this before and that one Jack Martin told him that he would probably be called upon to be interviewed. Mr. Newman told me that when he bought the building from Metro Realty (Mr. Copping), Guy Banister had already been a tenant in the building; that he could not remember any dates be- cause he didn't have his records; but that during the time he owned the building Guy Banister had owed him back rent (amount unknown); that when Banister got into trouble with the Internal Revenue, all the furniture in Banister's office had been seized, including the files. Mr. Newman purchased all the office furniture, including 5 filing cabinets, from the Internal Revenue hoping he could recover some of the money owed to him for back rent. The office furniture he kept and he can't remember what had happened to it. The 5 files (metal cabinets and contents were sold to Mrs. Banister for $25.00 (date unknown). She had them removed from his building on Camp Street to her home on Canal Boulevard. Mr. Newman said that he could not remember the names of the people who were his tenants back in 1963, but that many of them owed him back rent when they left. Mr. Newman also told me that the Federal people and the Secret Service have questioned him on several occasions about the "Fair Play For Cuba Movement" and the people involved, and that they would have all of the infor- mation. He said he could not remember anything at all about 1962 and 1963 without his records. It is the opinion of the interviewer that Mr. Newman was annoyed by the interview and it appeared that he did not want to become involved in this investigation, therefore, the interview was very short. GEORGE ECKERT MEMORANDUM Re: FERRIE February 3, 1967 TO: JIM GARRISON, DISTRICT ATTORNEY FROM: AGENT #1 RE: SMITH CASE ALVIN BEAUBOUEF visited DAVE at his office on about January 26th. They had a brief conversation and BEAUBOUEF left. I think the reason for his wanting to see DAVE was because of some kind of mix-up with the flight log books. The FAA called BEAUBOUEF and wanted to see his flight log book because they thought he had cheated on some flying time. The FAA checked into it and found out that BEAUBOUEF'S log book didn't match with DAVE'S. So, they called in the last three people that DAVE signed the log books for private pilot's licenses, and their log books didn't match with what DAVE had in his. So, DAVE buys new log books. They all get together to make the new log books match DAVE'S. DAVE forged two or three names. Q. Are they still working on these log books of DAVE'S? A. Yes. They were working on them last night. They only have one to go. Q. Has Beaubouef been around lately? A. No. This is the first time I've seen him in approximately two months. /leb

Nitschke in the office of\nMr. Jim Garrison, District Attorney on Tuesday, January 17, 1967\nat approximately 1:00 p.m.\nMy name is I. E. Nitschke. I live at 559 Focis in Metairie. My\nunlisted telephone number is 831-1648. My office phone at Michoud\nis 255-2711.\nDuring the latter part of 1961 I was contacted by William Guy\nBannister, then in the private investigative business in the City\nof New Orleans, Louisiana. At this time Bannister invited me to\nparticipate in a bid for the security contract at the forthcoming\nreactivation of the Michoud assembly facility in New Orleans,\nLouisiana. Bannister's interest was in submitting a bid for the\nsecurity as a part of the Housekeeping Program at this facility.\nI arrived in New Orleans about mid-November, 1961. Subsequently,\nBannister and I submitted a bid through several prime contractors\nfor the security contract at Michoud. In the interim, while we\nwere awaiting the awarding of the Housekeeping or support services\ncontract, I maintained a desk in Mr. Bannister's office, then\nsituated at 531 Lafayette in New Orleans.\nI recall on one occasion, possibly the early part of December,\n196 when I returned to Bannister's office there were several\nmale persons then engaged in a conference with Bannister. Sub-\nsequently, I was invited into his office and was introduced to\nfour or possibly five males, all of whom from appearance appeared\nto be of Latin extraction. I was later advised that these men\nwere Cubans that had sought refuge in the United States. After\nI was introduced to these men it was explained to those present\nthat I had been considered a firearms expert in my many years\nwith the Federal Bureau of Investigation; that I had an excellent\nunderstanding of nomenclature and the mechanics, etc. of various\ntypes of firearms. The conversation after the introduction\ndeveloped quickly into the fact that the persons in Bannister's\noffice were interested in obtaining firearms of many varieties,\nmainly shoulder weapons, machine guns or semi-automatic weapons.\nThey were interested in suppliers of this type of weapon. I\nrecall having stated that Klein's of Chicago, Illinois, a whole-\nsale firearms house, would be one source; that a firm in Hollywood,\nCalifornia, the name of which I do not recall at the moment, were\nimporters of many foreign types of weapons, primarily shoulder\nweapons and this might possibly be a source.\nThe taller of the men that were in Bannister's office had a full\nhead of black hair. He appeared to be between 6' and possibly\n6'2\" tall. His lips were full or thick. He appeared to be the\n5=AR\nleader in the conversation. There was a short, stocky man that\nPage Two\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke,\nI estimated to weigh from 210 to possibly 230 pounds with obviously\nlarge arms and neck. The others were lighter in complexion and\nall definitely appeared to be Latins.\nI have been shown a photograph in which the subjects are numbered\nfrom 1 to 7 and bears Exhibit A, my name and the date 1/17/67.\nThe subject identified with the numeral 3 appears extremely similar\nif not identical to the person I have referred to here as the\nshorter and heavier built of the Latins in Bannister's office.\nThe photograph bearing Nitschke-C with the date 1/17/67 is a\ngenerally good likeness of one of the men in Bannister's office.\nI recall that he had a more or less hairline mustache, black hair\nand was perhaps as light or lighter in skin coloring than any of\nthe others in the office. He did not appear to inject himself in\nthe conversation but sparsely and that for the most part was in\nSpanish between himself and the others in Bannister's office.\nThe conversation for the most part was directed to an individual\nhereinafter described as D-3 in photograph Nitschke-D dated 1/17/67.\nThe man in photo Nitschke-D appears to have a very striking\nresemblance to the tall man that I have previously described.\nNot too long after I had entered Bannister's office, the subject\nD-3 took a tablet on Bannister's desk and with a pen drew a rough\nsketch of a silencer adaptable to a rifle. At this point subject\nD-3 asked me specifically if I knew where silencers could be\nacquired that might be attached to rifles and or machine guns.\nMy reply to this query was in the negative. He then completed\nthe sketch that he had started and asked if the writer had any\nknowledge of where silencers could be made. To this query I\nreplied that they could perhaps be made by any welder or machinist\nthat was capable of doing precision work; that I knew of no such\nperson. The gist of the conversation in Bannister's office on\nthis occasion was primarily concerned with the acquisition of, as\nI gathered, a reasonable quantity of weapons. The purpose for\nthese weapons was not mentioned during my presence. Whether it\nwas later discussed, I am not aware of.\nAfter the departure of this group, which was late in the afternoon\nas I recall, I was told by Bannister that the subject D-3 was\nexceptionally adept in guerilla warfare and guerilla-type tactics.\nNOTE: Here Mr. Garrison and Mr. Nitschke discussed the difference\nin appearance of subject D-3 from the rest of the group, remarking\nthat it was rather unusual for a guerilla fighter to be so well\ndressed and well groomed.\nPage Three\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nI have. been shown a photograph identified as Nitschke-B with the\ndate 1/17/67 thereupon and this is a photograph bearing New Orleans\nPolice Department #107062. This man I met on one occasion in\nobview\nBannister's office. Again, this was very late in the afternoon.\nI would say approximately 5:00 p.m. I was attracted to the physical\nFERRIE\nappearance of this man by what appeared to be false hair and/or\nfalse eyelashes and his face appeared as though he had some type\nof make-up thereupon. The coat that he is wearing in the photo-\ngraph even appears similar to the one that he was wearing when\nI recall having met him. This man was accompanied by a smaller\nperson in stature and apparently younger in years and the gist\nof his conversation with Bannister when I was introduced was to\nthe effect that he had just returned from a trip to South America.\nI am not certain of the country that he had visited. The person\nwith him at this time spoke one or two words of Spanish. The\nperson identified in this photograph appeared to speak Spanish,\nin the words that he used, seemingly fluently. I do not know\nthe purpose of the visit of this individual to Bannister's office\nbut he did have some conversation with Bannister personally\nfollowing my introduction to him. I suppose that he was possibly\nin the office at best about one-half hour. I have been advised\nthat this man's name is David W. Ferrie.\nGARRISON:\nThe man that you described as D-3 in Nitschke-D who is standing\nwith the group with Lee Oswald -- is there anything else before\nwe depart from the pictures that you can recall? He is extremely\ninteresting from the conversation which you described and from\nBannister's description of him. Did he wear, for example, jewelry\nof any sort?\nNITSCHKE:\nNo, I don't even recall a ring. I will say this, he was neat\nand well-groomed in a dark suit and dark tie.\nGARRISON:\nDid he speak English?\nNITSCHKE:\nYes. Reasonably well, too, by the way.\nGARRISON:\nDo you recall if he had a nickname?\nPage Four\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nNITSCHKE:\nNo.\nGARRISON:\nLet me ask about the circumstances of the meeting with these men.\nWas this in the inner office?\nNITSCHKE:\nIt was in Bannister's own private office.\nGARRISON:\nDid he shut the door?'\nNITSCHKE:\nDefinitely. The door was definitely closed. There was only one\ndoor and it was definitely closed.\nGARRISON:\nAre any of these names of Cuban individuals familiar?\nRogelio Cisceros Diaz? Also known as Eugenio.\nNITSCHKE:\nNo.\nGARRISON:\nHow about the nickname Toro?\nNITSCHKE:\nNo.\nGARRISON:\nManual Gonzalez?\nNITSCHKE:\nGonzalez. Yes.\nPage Five\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nGARRISON:\nDoes that name come back at all looking at Nitschke-A?\nNITSCHKE:\nMr. Gonzalez could be possibly this \"3\" subject in Nitschke-A\nphotograph here. I don't want to be positive.\nGARRISON:\nBut that is your impression?\nNITSCHKE:\nYes.\nGARRISON:\nHow about the nickname Toro?\nNITSCHKE:\nNo, I don't associate it. I don't know how many timesBannister\nhad met these men previously but some of them had definitely met\nwith him before that date.\nGARRISON:\nThere was a relationship?.\nNITSCHKE:\nYes. He had met some, if not all of them previously.\nGARRISON:\nHe knew them by name?\nNITSCHKE:\nYes. He introduced me, but meeting them only one time the names\ndid not register.\nGARRISON:\nHow about the name Juan Johnny Martin?\nPage Six\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nNITSCHKE:\nNo. The name Martin is rather common.\nIVON:\nHow about Layton Martens? (showing photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nThis boy, I am wondering if he was with Ferrie that afternoon.\nGARRISON:\nHe was about 17 years old at that time.\nNITSCHKE:\nThe boy with him wasn't too old. That looks like the boy with\nFerrie. I gathered that the fellow with Ferrie had physically\nbeen with Ferrie from wherever he came from in South America.\nThat young man looks like he could have been the man.\nGARRISON:\nIs this boy generally about the age and type?\nNITSCHKE:\nHis haircut was short but whether it was a butch cut or not\nI do not know. This might have been the boy that was with him\nbut I don't want to say. Nitschke-E, New Orleans Police Depart-\nment photograph #105377 might possibly have been the person\naccompanying Ferrie on the occasion when I was in Bannister's\noffice.\nIVON:\nAmelio Santana? (showing photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nNo. He doesn't look familiar to me.\nPage Seven\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nIVON:\nMelvin Seeling? (showing photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nNo. Not by name. He doesn't look at all familiar. No. The\nfellows that were in there, their hair was reasonably well-groomed.\nIt wasn't shaggy.\nIVON:\nMiguel Torres? (showing photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nHe could have well been one of them. This fellow bears some\nphysical resemblance to one of the men. -I am thinking about his\nhair. None of them were too old. (Reference here made to photo-\ngraph Nitschke-F.)\nGARRISON:\nDidn't it seem rather odd to you after having known Guy Bannister\nso long and considering his background that he would be surrounded\nby these particular Cubans that you have described?\nNITSCHKE:\nTo be frank with you, it did. They certainly were the type of\npeople that I would not care to be associated with.\nGARRISON:\nOf those individuals you described, was there one who seemed\nhead of all the others, as their leader, in conversation?\nNITSCHKE:\nVery positively. The one that I have identified here as D-3.\nVery definitely the leader of the conversation. The polished\nlooking fellow. When he spoke the others listened. When he\nhad the floor, they didn't interrupt him.\nPage Eight\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nGARRISON:\nDid Guy indicate in any way the Latin country with regard to\nD-3 and his guerilla tactics?\nNITSCHKE:\nHe mentioned Cuba very definitely. In fact, Guy said, can you\nimagine meeting that fellow out in a dark alley somewhere. He\nwas a wiry, dark fellow.\nIVON:\nMorris Brownlee?\nNITSCHKE:\nNot by name, no. Definitely not.\nIVON:\n(Showing picture) I do not have this man's name.\nNITSCHKE:\nNo. I think there was only one or two that had a mustache and\nthey were not this heavy. More like hairline.\nIVON:\nMiguel Mariana Cruz. (showing photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nAssociation starts to bring back some reflection. There was one\nof these fellows as I recall that had some pimples on his face\nbut I don't believe it was this young man here.\nIVON:\nAlvin Beaubouef. (no photograph)\nNITSCHKE:\nNo. Name doesn't register.\nThe gist of the whole thing was the acquisition of weapons and\nsilencers. While I was in their presence that was their sole\nreason for being there and what was ahead of it or behind it,\nPage Nine\nStatement and interview with I. E. Nitschke.\nI don't know. Somewhere in that conversation, and this may not\nbe a direct quote, money did not seem to be any object - for\nwhatever that's worth.\nI might interject that after the incident I have described,\nBannister advised me that it was his understanding that there\nwould be training areas physically located in various sections\nof the United States and as I recall he principally mentioned\nthe South, where exiles and people sympathetic to the Cuban pro-\ngram would be trained in guerilla warfare and guerilla tactics.\nHe mentioned that the individual that I have tentatively identified\nin photograph Nitschke-D as D-3 was the person that would lead\nthe training of these people.\nADDENDUM:\nSince dictating the above I have been shown photograph Nitschke-G\ndated 1/17/67. This is a police photograph of Alvin R. Beaubouef.\nThere is a very striking resemblance between this photograph and\nthe man that I observed in Bannister's office with Ferrie, des-\ncribed in photograph Nitschke-B. I got the impression from the\nsmall amount of conversation that I overheard that both Ferrie\nand Beaubouef had within a matter of hours returned from some\nunknown country in South America. I am positive of the fact\nthat they had been to some South American country, the name of\nwhich I am not positive.\nI. E. MARY HELEN BRENGEL relative to\ninformation she may have pertaining to MR. GUY BANNISTER.\nMRS. BRENGEL stated that she was employed by MR. GUY\nBANNISTER from October 15, 1963, until December 10, 1963. During\nthis time MR. BANNISTER was using a vehicle which was the property\nof MRS. LANNE, the mother of JOHN LANNE. MRS. BRENGEL related\nthat MR. LANNE would arrive at MR. BANNISTER'S office and tell MR.\nBANNISTER that the car needed gas or that it needed oil. And on\none occasion that it needed air in the tires. MRS. BRENGEL\nrelated that it appeared this vehicle was being checked frequently\nbecause of an impending unannounced trip of some sort,\nMRS. BRENGEL also related that since MR. BANNISTER was\nseparated from his wife, he had a lot of personal things stored at\nthe office and in particular was several rifles, three or four.\nNow and then a MR GUYMAN would come into the office and talk to\nMR. BANNISTER about these rifles and they would hold them and\nexamine them. DELPHINE ROBERTS, who was also employed in MR.\nBANNISTER'S office at this time, told MRS. BRENGEL that MR. GUYMAN\nwas MR. BANNISTER'S gun expert.\nMRS. BRENGEL stated that during her employment there,\nMR. BANNISTER was dickering with the Mississippi Test Sight for\nthe contract of guarding the facility. In attempting this, he\nformed a group comprised of ex-FBI men and it is believed one of\nthem was named REGIS KENNEDY.\nMRS. BRENGEL further stated that the name of DAVE FERRIE\ncame up during the time MR. BANNISTER was securing information to\nprevent the deportation of CARLOS MARCELLO. She could not\nremember any particulars about this name.\nMRS. BRENGEL related that the day of the assassi\nshe and DELPHINE ROBERTS were in MR. Cenas sold the property to Benjamin S. Story.\nForty years later on June 24, 1891 Benjamin S. Story sold the\nproperty to the Crescent Encampment No. 1 of the Order of Knights\nof Temperence, who owned the property for 20 years until December\n7, 1919 when they sold it to the Longshoremen's Benevolent\nAssociation, also known as the Stevedore's and Longshoremen's\nBenevolent Society. The union also owned the property for about\n20 years or until March 19, 1942 when they sold it to United\nBuilding Association of New Orleans in whose possession it\nremained for the next 17 years.\nThroughout the property transfers the corner lot is referred\nto by either or both of its municipal addresses: Camp St. and\n529-533 Lafayette St. The lot at issue (3rd Tax Assessment\nDistrict, Square 164, Lot D) is on the corner of Camp and\nLafayette Streets. The square is bounded by Poydras, Magazine,\nLafayette, and Camp. We know that the Lafayette and Camp Street\naddresses belong to the same property not only because the\nproperty descriptions, i.e. \"metes and bounds\" and the square\nfootage, match from act to act whether either R both addresses\nare used, but also because there is no subdivision plan filed,\nwhich would indicate that the lot had been divided.\nOn August 6, 1959 in an act before Irving Novick, Notary\nUnited Building Association of New Orleans sold 544 Camp St. to\nOscar J. The property addresses are 544\nCamp St. and 529-31-33 Lafayette St. The act also indicates that\nSam Newman was married and lived at 1337 Mithra Street.\nOn July 12, 1965, Sam Newman sold the property to Fidelity\nHomestead for $58,000.00 cash. The act was passed before Allain\nC. Andry (now the President of Fidelity Homestead). On that same\ndate and before Allain C. Andry again, the property was sold to\nHughes J. de la Vergne II, never married 2314 Jefferson Avenue,\nCharles Edouard de la Vergne, never married 427 Walnut, and Louis\nVictor de la Vergne, never married 427 Walnut for $34,800.00\nterms. Apparently, the Homestead lost over $20,000.00 on the\nsale, but Fidelity lost much more.\nOn March 7, 1973 Judge Edward J. Boyle of the Federal\nDistrict Court granted a joint motion filed by the U.S.\nAttorney's Office, Gerald Gallinghouse, via Assistant U.S.\nAttorney Robert N. Habans, Jr. and by the attorney for the de la\nVergnes, Ralph L. Kaskell, Jr. of DKS. The joint motion sold the\nproperty to the U.S. Government for $141,162.50.\nIt is indeed ironic that the Federal government chose to\nerect its building, named the Hale Boggs Building in honor of\nthat member of the Warren commission who disappeared in a plane\nover Alaska, on the site of the 544 Camp St. building.\nRe: BANISTER\nPLAY for CUDA PAMPHLETS\nMEMORANDUM\nFAIR DISPOSITION FILES of\nDELPHINE RODERTS\nMay I, 1967 - Dictated\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON, District Attorney\nFROM:\nANDREW J. SCIAMBRA, Assistant District Attorney\nRE:\nMRS. MARY BANISTER INTERVIEW WITH\nApril 29th and 30th, 1967\nI traveled to Monroe, Louisiana to talk to Mrs. MARY\nBANISTER in connection with the files her husband GUY BANISTER\nwas keeping in the course of his investigative work. Mrs. BANISTER\ntold me that after he husband died Mrs. DELPHINE ROBERTS and her\ndaughter took some files from GUY BANISTER's apartment and also\nfrom GUY BANISTER's office and turned them over to Mr. G. WRAY\nGILLS\nGILL. She also said that she believes these files were in\nreference to an investigation concerning DAVID FERRIE and his\ncase with Eastern Airlines. She stated that she later on called\nMr. GILL and asked him to return these files to her and he did\nnot do SO. She said that she does not know what happened to\nthese files. Mrs. BANISTER went on to say that she also burned\nsome files because she felt, in her opinion, that these files\nshould be destroyed as they might hurt some innocent people;\nthat these files did not contain anything in regards to Communist\nor anti-Communist group activities. Mrs. BANISTER told me that\nabout 1 or 2 days after her husband's death she did go to his\noffice in an attempt to prevent anyone from taking these files\nand discovered that some files had already been taken. The old\nman who lived above BANISTER's office told her that he had seen\nROBERTS:\nDELPHONE ROBERTS and her daughter take some files while her\ndaughter and a boliceman, was present.\nPAMMHLNTS:\nFPCC\nShe said that the only thing she could say in regard\nto OSWALD's Fair Play for Cuba Committee was that she saw some\nFair Play For Cuba leaflets in BANISTER's office when she went\nthere after his death. Mrs. BANISTER said she threw them away\nin the wastebasket. Mrs. BANISTER told me that because she was\nin such financial difficulties she sold many of her husband's\nfiles to the Metropolitan Crime Commission, and she gave some\nMCC:\nto the State Sovereignty Commission, and she also gave some to\nthe State Police. She said that she also gave a complete index\ncard catalogue, which was a record of every investigation that\nher husband was involved in, to the State Police. Mrs. BANISTER\nsaid that she had never heard her husband speak of the Friends of\nCltainil by\nCuba or Voice of Cuba or SERGIO ARCACHA SMITH, BILL DALZELL, OR\nN.O.D.AS office)\nCARLOS QUEROGA. She said that the name REGIS KENNEDY is familiar\nto her probably because I told her he is an F.B.I. Agent.\nI looked over the books which Mrs. BANISTER had, which\nwere in her husband's library, and these were text books on\nvarious subjects which did not pertain to any investigation. She\ntold me that she had donated other text books to the New Orleans\nPublic Library, Northeastern State College, and Louisiana State\nUniversity in New Orleans.\nMrs. BANISTER emphasized the point that she did not\nwant to get involved in any way, and that if anyone did ask her\nif she had talked to anyone from the District Attorney's Office,\nshe would say that she had not. However, Mrs. BANISTER did say\nthat she would like to help us in any way she could but that she\nwould like to help us on a confidential basis.\nANDREW J. OSTER, WM, age 38\nRESIDING AT:\n809 Audubon\nTELEPHONE NO.\n525-4205\nSTATEMENT\nIn about 1956, Guy Banister and I went in business\ntogether in the private investigating firm known as Guy Banister\nand Associates, Inc. At that time, we were in the Balter\nBuilding on St. Charles Street in New Orleans. During the\ncourse of time I was in business with Banister, I met Jack\nMartin and others.\nSubsequently, I left Banister and formed my own\ncorporation in 1958. It was known as Southern Research\nCompany, Inc. now Joseph A. Oster and Associates, Inc.\nDuring the time I was in business with Banister, I\nhad occasion to visit his home on Argonne Blvd. At that\ntime, Banister had to my knowledge a number of rifles and also\na 357 Magnum. I can vaguely remember that he had a .30\ncaliber bolt action rifle also a shotgun, also an over and under,\nI don't know what caliber. The .30 caliber bolt action had a\ntelescopic sight. I know Banister carried a 357 magnum with\ngold initials (I think the initials were WGB). What happened\nto these guns, I don't know.\nDuring the course of my friendship with Banister,\nfrom the middle of 62 to the end of '63, I met Joe Newbrough,\nALL\nBill Ninski, Delphene Roberts, Jack Martin, and I was introduced\n-2-\nto Dave Ferrie and two Cuban exiles. I don't remember their\nnames. One I know was employed in the Audubon Building for\nan engineering firm on the 5th floor. He was tall, thin,\nJorge Ramirez Engineer for Warren moses 529 277)\ndark hair, and I vaguely remember he was a draftsman or some\nkind of engineer. He was approximately 30 to 32 years old.\nAt the time I met them, they were driving an old Ford. The\nother Cuban was short, stocky, moustache and appeared to be\nhighly educated. He was about 45 years old. When Banister\nintroduced me to them, he told me they were Cuban exiles\nand had been run out of Cuba by Castro. He also told me\nthey were the heads of some kind of exile movement here in\nNew Orleans, and they were trying to get some kind of program\nstarted.\nI remember one time Banister was telling me about\nsome automobile parts and heavy equipment being sent to\nCuba in violation of a State Department band against the export\nof equipment to Cuba. He was investigating it for\nsomebody. He told me it was in violation of the State Depart-\nment's band and he left me with the impression it was jeeps,\nand sugar refinery equipment. For some reason I remember the\nname Dibert, Bancroft, and Roth at Tulane and South Jefferson\nDavis. This comes in somewhere, I don't remember exactly where.\nHe told me he had pictures of this stuff and mentioned the\nname of the wharf where it was. He also told me he could\ntake me and show me the equipment that was going to Cuba.\nI remember he told me that he had pictures of this equipment\nand\nbut I don't remember if he told me Newbrough did take them\nor was going to take them. He called and asked me about a\ncamera, but I didn't have the kind he wanted. So, the next\ntime I saw him, Newbrough was in the office along with Martin,\nDave Ferrie, and Dave Lewis. Delphene Roberts was the\nsecretary. Bill Ninski was in the other room. This was on\n-3-\nLafayette Street. We went around to the restaurant and New-\nbrough told me he had taken some pictures for Banister.\nWhat they were, I don't know. I think Newbrough or Martin\nthe\nmentioned jeeps to me.\nSubsequently, I ran into one of the Cubans I\nwas introduced to in Banister's Office in my own office\nbuilding and I would see him coming in and out of the elevator,\nand I asked him if he had seen Banister and he said, \"No,\nI'm not fooling with that anymore.\" I haven't seen this\nCuban for about four months now. This particular unknown\nCuban was watching Oswald pass out these pamphlets in front\nof Maison Blanche, Kress, and the Audubon Building.\n(sic)\nI remember - Anna Birdglass was also in and out\ncheck\nof Banister's Office during this same period.\nphoto of\npossible\n\"escort\nUnarged letter\nRe: (1) BANISTER\n(2) CUBAN\nBanister Calm\nBanesher,\nEXILES\nOpenation\nFor: Redigult, Friends\nof Denr. GOLDSMITH's name\nwas given to this office by BARBARA REED.\nI interviewed GOLDSMITH at his apartment at 6:00 pm on February\nthe 29th , 1968.\nBetween November 1962 and February 1964, GOLDSMITH worked for\nthe BOEING COMPANY which had its offices at 225 Baronne St.\nWhile working for the BOEING CO., GOLDSMITH lived at either\n512 or 517 St. Louis St. ( GOLDSMITH can not remember the address)\nfor 3 months, Nov. 1962 thru Jan. 1963. GOLDSMITH then moved\nto 322 Exchange Place in February of 1963 and remained there\nuntil February 1964.\nGOLDSMITH first met KERRY THORNLEY at either the Bourbon House\nor at the Ryder Coffee House. GOLDSMITH frequented the Ryder\nCoffee House and IVAN's discussion sessions and knows such\npeople as BARBARA REED, JACK FRAZIER, JACK BURNSIDES, JOHN\nKAMAS, ROSS BUCKLEY, HELEN GLADSTONE and WILLIAM BRADY.\nGOLDSMITH says that when he met THORNLEY, THORNLEY attempted\nto get into a political discussion with GOLDSMITH. GOLDSMITH\nsaid that if they were going to be friends they would have to\nrefrain from discussing politics (GOLDSMITH says that this was\nbecause THORNLEY was a right-winger, while he was a left-winger).\nGOLDSMITH said that discussing politics was \"one of his (THORNLEY)\ntoys\". GOLDSMITH described THORNLEY as very far right and in every\nconversation THORNLEY was \" going to be the arch conservative\".\nGOLDSMITH says that THORNLEY never mentioned LEE HARVEY OSWALD\nbefore the Assassination. GOLDSMITH never saw OSWALD at any\ntime either with THORNLEY or alone. GOLDSMITH said that he knew\nTHORNLEY was writing a book about his experiences in the Marine\nCorps. THORNLEY told GOLDSMITH the book was pattered after some-\none. THORNLEY had known in the service (THORNLEY did not indicate\nwhom). GOLDSMITH said that he and THORNLEY used to sit around\ntrying to think up a title for THORNLEY's book.\nGOLDSMITH says that the night of the Assassination, THORNLEY\nwent into the Bourbon House (GOLDSMITH was present) and said,\n\" have you heard the good news\". After the Assassination THORNLEY\nMEMORANDUM\nPAGE 2\nRE: BERNARD GOLDSMITH\ntold GOLDSMITH that he had known OSWALD in the Marines.\nGOLDSMITH says that since he had a secret clearance be descided\nnot to see THORNLEY anymore. The last time GOLDSMITH saw\nTHORNLEY was in January of 1964. GOLDSMITH says that he never\nloaned THORNLEY any money, but if he did THORNLEY must have\npaid it back.\nGOLDSMITH met WILLIAM BRADY at IVAN's discussion sessions.\nGOLDSMITH said of BRADY, \" he turns me off,( refering to the\nfact that BRADY was gay). When I asked GOLDSMITH what he thought\nof BRADY, he replied, # he (BRADY) struck me as somehow dangerous\",\n\"something wasn't right about him (BRADY)\". GOLDSMITH describes\nBRADY as # radical, extremist, violent segregationist and some-\nwhat gay\". GOLDSMITH did not like BRADY because of the afore-\nmentioned \"qualities\" and thusly did not associate with him.\nGOLDSMITH says that BRADY actually became violent at some of\nthe meetings at IVAN's and that BRADY never missed a chance\nto jump on a soap box to denounce something or someone.\nGOLDSMITH was very cooperative and said that if this office\nhad any further questions he would be available.\nGary Sanders\nCC: Andrew Sciambra\nGMS/gs\nRe: FERRIE\nMEMORANDUM\nSSN\nMarch 3, 1967\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON, DISTRICT ATTORNEY\nFROM:\nJULIAN R. MURRAY, JR., ASSISTANT DISTRICT ATTORNEY\nRE:\nKENNEDY ASSASINATION INVESTIGATION\nOn March 2, 1967, a MR. LOUIS JONES who is a victim in\na case which I am prosecuting in Section \"B\" came in to give some\ninformation which he thought might be useful to our office. I\nwas unable to tell whether or not this information would be of\nany value, but I thought I should pass it along to you for what-\never it's worth.\nMR. JONES explained to me that his father is an invalid\nand it is therefore necessary that his mother, MRS. WILLIAM B.\nJONES, hire male nurses to stay with him at all times. Somewhere\nin January of 1965 they hired a male nurse who stayed with them\nfor about two months. MRS. JONES recalls that when she hired this\nsubject, he had a letter of recommendation from a person who pur-\nported to be either a psychiatrist or a psychologist whose last\nname was FERRIE and who lived on Louisiana Avenue Parkway. The\nsubject whom she hired gave the name of JIMMIE JOHNSON and at the\ntime he informed her that he was living with MR. FERRIE at his\napartment on Louisiana Avenue Parkway. She said that she could\nnot remember much about this subject except that he was very\neffeminate. She still has her cancelled check with which she\npaid him his salary in January of 1965, and she also has his\nsocial security number which was 420-56-5635.\nMR. JONES requests that if anyone in our office cares\nto speak with his mother about this matter, that we contact him\nfirst. He pointed out that she was an elderly person with a heart\ncondition and he is afraid that a lot of questioning would greatly\nupset her unless he were present.\nR:JHAW\nMEMORANDUM\nRe: THORNLEY\nTO: LOUIS IVON, Chief Investigator\nFROM: GARY SANDERS, Investigator\nSUBJECT: VIRGINIA JOHNSON CLAY SHAW'S MAID\n6434 N. Derbigny St.\n279-7228\nThe following information was obtained from an\ninterview conducted at the home of VIRGINIA JOHNSON on the\n15th of January, 1968 between 8:20 PM and 9:30 PM. Miss Jody\nDuek took the notes at this meeting which were used to write\nthis report.\nKERRY THORNLEY'S CANDLORD AT TIME OF ASSASSINATION\nMRS. VIRGINIA JOHNSON, Social Security Number\n434-36-5071, worked for CLAY SHAW for about 9 years. She quit\nduring Hurricane \"Betsy\" because her home had been flooded.\nMrs. JOHNSON is now employed by JACK SPENCER ( JOHN R. SPENCER\n1805 Esplanade St. ,943-8236) on Mondays and Thursdays from\n9 AM to 5 PM. Mrs. JOHNSON did not recognize the name KERRY\nTHORNLEY and the only time she ever worked at 1824 Dauphine St.\nwas when she cleaned up an upstairs apartment. Mrs. JOHNSON\nhas worked for SPENCER since \"Betsy\" and she gave no reason for\nhaving left the employment of CLAY SHAW. She has also worked\nfor the \" Plantation Home \" in the French Quarter.\nMrs. JOHNSON said that she had made the black robe and\nhood for SHAW before Mardi Gras of 1959 or 1960 and she would\npress these garments before each Carneval season.\nMrs. JOHNSON said she would recognize someone if they\nhad visited SHAW, but she admitted she did not see many of his\nvisitors. She said SHAW was always very nice to her and always\ntreated her well. She was very surprised to hear that SHAW had\nbeen arrested. Mrs. JOHNSON said she had never heard the name\nBERTRAND and had never seen any letter addressed to CLAY BERTRAND\nat the Dauphine Street address. ( Check memo on VIRGINIA JOHNSON\nrelating to an interview with persons at Balthazor Fabric Store\non Franklin Ave. were witnesses state that Mrs. JOHNSON did\nsee a letter addressed to CLAY BERTRAND, 1313 Dauphine St. New\nOrleans, La.) Mrs. JOHNSON describes her encounter at Balthazor\nFabrics as a laughing and Joking session in which she and some\nof the salesladies talked about SHAW and the fact that she had\nworked for him and had made his black robe and hood.\nMrs. JOHNSON says that she did see JACK SPENCER at\nSHAW'S house , but never the reverse. She said that both SPENCER's\nand SHAW's dogs were the same breed, Weimaraner.\nMrs. JOHNSON said SHAW was visited by a Mr. J.B. or\nJ.C. on many occasions. This individual was employed at the\nInternational Trade Mart and his last name began with a \"D\".\nOne person that visited SHAW was a MISS LYONS, an older woman\nwho had grey hair, but was still very attractive. Most of the\nwomen who visited SHAW were elderly and the men were generally\nin their twenties.\nVIRGINIA JOHNSON\nJanuary 16,1968\npage 2\nI showed Mrs. JOHNSON my picture file and she did\nseem to recognize LAYTON MARTENS and TOMMY COX mainly from the\ngeneral description of \" light hair and skinny \". She did not\nremember seeing any Cubans at SHAW's house and never saw FERRIE,\nOSWALD or any other persons that have been publicized on tele-\nvision.\nMrs. JOHNSON's working schedule was daily and she\nwould arrive at SHAW's at about 3 PM when she would clean the\napartment and prepare SHAW's dinner at about 5PM. She generally\nleft between 5 and 6 PM so she was not in a position to have\nknown who SHAW had as visitors during the evening hours.\nOne year ( unknown ) when Mrs. JOHNSON went on a\ntwo week vacation, SHAW hired a ONELL BELL ( 1815 Delery St.\n279-6647 ) for 2 weeks to take her place. When Mrs. JOHNSON\nreturned she said SHAW had been very dissatisfied with Mrs. BELL,\nbut he did not say why.\nThe method that SHAW used to pay MRS. JOHNSON is also\nvery interesting since on the surface it looks as though SHAW may\nhave been using some illegal tax deductions. SHAW paid VIRGINIA\nJOHNSON $35.00 a week by check made out to her. SHAW also gave\nher a check for $20.00 a week, also made out to her, for groceries\nand other items for the house. This is a total of $55.00 a week\nthat Shaw could claim on his income tax as salary paid to MRS.\nJOHNSON MRS. JOHNSON asked SHAW about this arrangement and he\nsaid he was paying her Social Security so she did not have to\nworry.\nIt might be interesting to find out if he was\nclaiming the $55.00 per week as a deduction rather than the $35.00\na week.\nRe: SHAW\n( Bernadas Weise)\nMEMORANDUM\nMay 5, 1969\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON, District Attorney'\nFROM:\nANDREW J. WEISS informed me that OSWALD just\nwalked into his store one day seeking a job as a photographer.\nWEISS said that he never did introduce himself and merely said\nthat he had experience in photography and was seeking work in\nthat field. WEISS said that he told him that he did not need\nany help and referred him to MAX HILL and JACK BEACH, 709 Royal\nStreet. WEISS said that OSWALD thanked him and before he left\nasked him for fifty cents. WEISS said that this surprised him\nbecause OSWALD was neat and did not look like a panhandler.\nHe said OSWALD did not ask for full-time employment but said that\nhe was looking for part-time work to hold him over. WEISS said\nthat he never told anyone about this incident as it was quite\ninsignificant. He said that after the assassination he recognized\nOSWALD's picture as the person who came into his store looking\nfor a job, however, he said that he still didn't tell anyone\nabout this incident.\nWEISS said that sometime in early December, the\nFBI came to his place of business and asked him if OSWALD had\ntried to get a job from him. He told the FBI that he thought\nthat the person whom he had talked to was OSWALD, but that\nOSWALD never introduced himself. The FBI told him that they\nknew it was OSWALD because OSWALD had used BERNADAS & WEISS as a\nreference on one of his job applications. The FBI said that\nOSWALD had put on the application that he worked there for three\nmonths. WEISS said that he gave the FBI the same story that he\ngave us and said that the FBI thanked him and that was the last\nhe heard about the matter.\nWe then talked to BERNADAS and BERNADAS was not\nworking there at the time and therefore could be of no help in\nthis matter.\nWEISS informed us that he knows CLAY SHAW from\nseeing him around the Quarter and that on two occasions SHAW came\nto a book review party that he had given for two authors. C. JOHNSON\n-\nAfter returning from Ft. Worth with Bill Boxley on\nThursday, August 24, 1967, Boxley and I visited 1026 N. Beckley\nAvenue, where we interviewed Mrs. A. C. JOHNSON.\nAs she was preparing supper we stayed only a short time\nto avoid antagonizing her in case we wanted to see her again.\nShe furnished the information that OSWALD would use the\npay telephone in thehall \"2 or 3 times a day\" and would speak\nRussian.\nShe told us that OSWALD kept his room neatly despite the\nfact that he ate make-shift meals in there. She added that she\nwas surprised that they discovered a pistol holster in his room\nand then went on to explain that of course she never would do such\na thing as to look through his dresser drawers. It was clear to\nBoxley and I that she obviously had looked through his things,\notherwise, she would have had no basis for being surprised at the\ndiscovery of the holster.\nMrs. JOHNSON also said that in the turmoil in OSWALD's\nroom following the assassination, one of the curtain rods was bent\nor pulled down by a detective.\nIt was noted that access to OSWALD's room is via the\nmain living room, where residents frequently sit and watch\ntelevision. In other words, OSWALD did not have a private\nentrance to his room.\nAgency\nNA Number N8640\nExpiration MAY 27 1968\nI, a resident of ORLEANS\nParish, apply to use the New\nOrleans Public Library I agree to observe the rules of the Library and to\nbe responsible for all items borrowed on my card.\nPrint\nName\nOswald LEE\n11.\nLast\nFirst\nMiddle\nHome address 4907 MAGAZINE Phone -\nOccupation Mechanic Employer Wor. S. Secret Service. Mr. Newman asked me whether or not the\nOffice of the District Attorney or I was investigating the death\nof President Kennedy. I told him it was something stemming from\nthis. He then told me he had heard about this before and that one\nJack Martin told him that he would probably be called upon to be\ninterviewed.\nMr. Newman told me that when he bought the building\nfrom Metro Realty (Mr. Copping), Guy Banister had already been a\ntenant in the building; that he could not remember any dates be-\ncause he didn't have his records; but that during the time he\nowned the building Guy Banister had owed him back rent (amount\nunknown); that when Banister got into trouble with the Internal\nRevenue, all the furniture in Banister's office had been seized,\nincluding the files. Mr. Newman purchased all the office furniture,\nincluding 5 filing cabinets, from the Internal Revenue hoping he\ncould recover some of the money owed to him for back rent. The\noffice furniture he kept and he can't remember what had happened\nto it. The 5 files (metal cabinets and contents were sold to Mrs.\nBanister for $25.00 (date unknown). She had them removed from his\nbuilding on Camp Street to her home on Canal Boulevard.\nMr. Newman said that he could not remember the names\nof the people who were his tenants back in 1963, but that many of\nthem owed him back rent when they left. Mr. Newman also told me\nthat the Federal people and the Secret Service have questioned him\non several occasions about the \"Fair Play For Cuba Movement\" and\nthe people involved, and that they would have all of the infor-\nmation. He said he could not remember anything at all about 1962\nand 1963 without his records.\nIt is the opinion of the interviewer that Mr. Newman\nwas annoyed by the interview and it appeared that he did not want\nto become involved in this investigation, therefore, the interview\nwas very short.\nGEORGE ECKERT\nMEMORANDUM\nRe: FERRIE\nFebruary 3, 1967\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON, DISTRICT ATTORNEY\nFROM:\nAGENT #1\nRE:\nSMITH CASE\nALVIN BEAUBOUEF visited DAVE at his office on about\nJanuary 26th. They had a brief conversation and BEAUBOUEF left.\nI think the reason for his wanting to see DAVE was because of\nsome kind of mix-up with the flight log books. The FAA called\nBEAUBOUEF and wanted to see his flight log book because they\nthought he had cheated on some flying time. The FAA checked into\nit and found out that BEAUBOUEF'S log book didn't match with\nDAVE'S. So, they called in the last three people that DAVE\nsigned the log books for private pilot's licenses, and their log\nbooks didn't match with what DAVE had in his. So, DAVE buys new\nlog books. They all get together to make the new log books match\nDAVE'S. DAVE forged two or three names.\nQ. Are they still working on these log books of DAVE'S?\nA. Yes. They were working on them last night. They\nonly have one to go.\nQ. Has Beaubouef been around lately?\nA. No. This is the first time I've seen him in\napproximately two months.\n/leb"
