FERRIE, DAVID WILLIAM (DECEASED) MEMORANDUM 28 December 1966 TO: JIM GARRISON DISTRICT ATTORNEY FROM: WILLIAM GURVICH INVESTIGATOR SUBJ: DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE & AL BEAUBOUEF - GUNS, SALE OF Following my discussion with your regarding DAVID FERRIE, I endeavored to contact certain pilots who have known him and might have had contact with, or knowledge of, him during recent years. I contacted one KEN MENARD, Manager of General Aviation at New Orleans International Airport, who could not give much infor- mation about FERRIE that was not already known. MENARD said he recently purchased a 30-06 rifle with scope from AL BEAUBOUEF, a friend and protege of FERRIE. I told him I would be interested in seeing this gun to examine it and he informed me he had loaned it to a friend to go hunting. At first it appeared that the gun was not in New Orleans at this time but MENARD soon called me back to tell me his friend was not leaving until the next day. I immediately made plans to meet MENARD and substitute one of my personal rifles for his. At 4:00 PM, 26 December 1966, I met MENARD on the aircraft parking ramp at New Orleans International Airport. He gave me his rifle, which he had picked up from his friend since our last telephone conversation, and I gave him my own Winchester Model 70, .308 caliber rifle with a four-power Redfield scope and one box of Winchester 150 grain cartridges for his friend's use. MENARD stated he had paid BEAUBOUEF $40.00 for the rifle. At 4:40 PM, this date, I arrived at DISTRICT ATTORNEY JIM GARRI- SON'S office and turned the rifle over to him. This is a 30-06 caliber, Remington barrel and action, Fajen stock with Monte Carlo cheekpiece, Dacote 4-9X40 scope, Weaver mounts, good over- all condition. The serial number of this rifle is 4008967 (U.S. Remington). MENARD also told me BEAUBOUEF had offered to sell him a .357 caliber pistol on the Wednesday before Christmas. I suggested to MENARD that he purchase this pistol if he could. On 27 December, at 10:00 AM, I arrived at JIM GARRISON'S office with my photographic equipment and made several close-up Polaroid pictures of this newly acquired rifle. On this same date I learned that BEAUBOUEF had given his address as 2427 ALVAR STREET when picked up on 23 NOVEMBER 1963 at the residence of DAVID FERRIE. In reality this was not his address and was probably used in an attempt to conceal the fact he was living with FERRIE, a known homosexual. At 2:00 PM, 27 December, MENARD called FERRIE at New Orleans Lakefront Airport and asked that he have BEAUBOUEF call him. FERRIE said he expected to hear from BEAUBOUEF momentarily and page TWO MEMO - 28 December 1966 GARRISON - GURVICH would deliver the message. At 6:30 PM, 27 December, MENARD reported to me that BEAUBOUEF was flying to New Orleans International Airport from Lakefront Airport to deliver the .357 caliber pistol. I arrived at the International airport at 6:50 PM as BEAUBOUEF was landing. At 6:58 PM, BEAUBOUEF and a male companion parked their aircraft on the concrete ramp immediately in front of GENERAL AVIATION. This was a CESSNA 150 (two place), blue and white, registration number N3916J. This is owned by SPREMICH ENTERPRISES, a private charter, instruction and rental business at Lakefront Airport, owned by RUDY SPREMICH. SPREMICH formerly flew with National Air Lines, then worked for the Federal Aviation Agency, leaving them when his division was transferred to Houston, Texas. BEAUBOUEF was wearing an open button-down sweater, gray slacks, sport shirt, no hat. His companion was a male caucasian, 5-10, 160, blonde wavy hair, wearing a white, open, button-down sweater. The latter constantly patted and fingered his hair in a rather effeminate way. BEAUBOUEF entered GENERAL AVIATION carrying a small box. His companion followed. at 7:10 PM, both came out with MENARD, spoke briefly outside the building, then BEAUBOUEF and companion went to the rest room area where they remained three minutes. They came out, entered the aircraft in which they had arrived, taxiied away from the ramp and took off on runway 19 at 7:22 PM. At this time the weather was overcast and it was raining. It is my opinion that it was not "Cessna 150" weather. At 7:17 PM MENARD gave me the pistol he had just purchased from BEAUBOUEF. This is an INTERCONTINENTAL ARMS .357 revolver, single action Frontier type, blue steel, brass frame handle and trigger guard, with walnut grips, serial number 5361. On 28 December, at 10:00 AM, I arrived in JIM GARRISON'S office and turned this gun over to him. On this date I photographed the revolver taking close-up Polaroid pictures. I then stripped the 30-06 rifle and scope and made 4X5 and 35mm close-up's of the rifle and revolver. 8x10 black and white prints were then submitted to the District Attorney. Wisin WILLIAM H. GURVICH WHG:wg MEMORANDUM 30 December 1967 TO: JIM GARRISON DISTRICT ATTORNEY. FROM: WILLIAM GURVICH INVESTIGATOR SUBJ: DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE - DISTINGUISHED HAIR-DO On 29 December 1966, I visited New Orleans Lakefront Airport for the purpose of gathering information about DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE. I thought the following would be of some interest. Approximately three months prior to this date, FERRIE expressed a desire to look distinguished. In order to do this he clipped hair from a white mongrel dog and pasted them on his temples. He apparently experienced a feeling of accomplishment as he wore them for several days. To my knowledge this was not reported to the SPCA or the barber's union. WILLIAM H. GURVICH WHG:wg MEMORANDUM 15 February 1067 TO: JIM GARRISON DISTRICT ATTORNEY FROM: WILLIAM GURVICH INVESTIGATOR SUBJ: DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE - 1957 INCIDENT Although I had known of DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE for several years prior to April 1957, this was my first encounter with him in any legal or criminal fashion. Excerpts of that incident follow. On 17 April 1957, MRS. FRANK VILLAMEUR, wife of the owner of BELL RADIO & SUPPLY COMPANY, 2625 Tulane Avenue, relative to thefts of merchandise. On 22 April I learned that an employee of the victimshad been arrested in Los Angeles, California on 6 March 1951 (as a juven- ile) and in New Orleans on 6 January 1954 for shoplifting. The employee was MICHAEL OTTY CLYDE WAKELING, residing 209 VINET STREET, METAIRIE, LOUISIANA. When first interrogated WAKELING denied knowledge of the missing merchandise but later confessed when led to believe I was sum- moning an eye-witness who would identify him as the one who was seen entering the rear of the victim's place of business after closing hours. At 3:10 PM, 22 April, I arrived with WAKELING and a Jefferson Parish Deputy Sheriff at 209 VINET STREET where WAKELING pointed out items he admitted stealing. These items were one Voice of Music mahognay phonograph, one Voice of Music amplifier, two sets of wrought iron table legs. When we arrived at 3:10 PM a male caucasian was washing a car in front of the address. As I glanced at him his peculiar hair and eyebrows were immediately noticeable. Looking further I recognized him as DAVE FERRIE, a pilot with EASTERN AIR LINES. I asked him, "Aren't you DAVE FERRIE?" To which he replied, "Yeah" Inside 209 VINET STREET the odor was atrocious. In a room that might at one time have been a dining room were many cages with white mice. These cages were against each wall and stacked on top of each other. There was no air conditioning or exhaust fan and the filth and odor were so sickening the Deputy, two New Orleans Detectives and I went outside and let WAKELING bring the stolen property to us. WAKELING explained the white mice by saying he lived with FERRIE who was experimenting to develope a cure for cancer. I told him he had certainly developed one for sinus. At 4:00 PM, 22 April 1957, WAKELING was charged with RS 14:67-69, Affidavit Number 156-584, Item No. D8605-57, First District, Zone "0". Total value: $239.63 WAKELING'S NOPD BOI number is 68446. BOI Los Angeles is 162904. WEG:wg WILLIAM H. GURVICH MEMORANDUM 14 February 1967 TO: JIM GARRISON DISTRICT ATTORNEY FROM: WILLIAM GURVICH INVESTIGATOR SUBJ: DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE - - I. E. NITSCHKE'S DESCRIPTION OF I have on this read the January 17, 1967, statement of I. E. Nitschke and wish to make the following note. On page three, paragraph one, NITSCHKE identified NOPD BOI Photo #107062 of DAVID FERRIE as being one of the persons he had met in the late GUY BANNISTER'S office. During NITSCHKE'S description and discussion of FERRIE, he added that the coat worn in the photograph looked like the one worn by FERRIE when he saw him in person. Your attention is directed to my report of 27 January 1967. On page three, paragraph five, aircraft mechanic FRED LENZ, when interviewed by me. at the WHITE ROCK AIRPORT in Dallas, Texas, selected this same photograph of FERRIE and said he had seen him at that airport, LENZ also mentioned a sport jacket (coat) that was "checkered, brown and light gray or white." This description is very similar to the coat worn by FERRIE in the photograph. Welciam W Junior WILLIAM H. On page ten I noticed that FERRIE purchased a school bus to apparently transport trainees to the Cuban training area on the North side of Lake Poontchartrain. If FERRIE operated this vehicle this could account for the necessity of a chauffeur's license. I offer this only as a possibility at this time. William H Sunnd WILLIAM H. GURVICH WHG:wg STATEMENT of GEORGE LARDNER, JR., White Male, 32 years of age, residing 5604 Thirty-Second Street NorthWest, Washington, D. C., relative to his interview with DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE on this date. Questions by WILLIAM GURVICH Answers by LARDNER Q. What is your full name, please? A. George Edmund Lardner, Junior. Q. You are with the Washington Post, is that right? A. Right. "l. Is your presence in New Orleans in relation to the District Attorney's investigation? A. Yes. Q. How long have you been in the city? A. I arrived Monday evening, the twentieth of February. Q. Where are you staying? A. The Bourbon-Orleans. Q. Have you interviewed DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE since your arrival? A. Yes. Q. When was that? A. From approximately midnight February twenty-second to a few minutes before four A.M., this date, or February twenty- second, anyway you want to put it. Q. Where did this take place? A. At MR. FERRIE'S flat, that's 3330 Louisiana Avenue Parkway. Q. Was anyone else present? A. No. Q. How did you get there? A. By cab. I forget which company it was, I think it was United. Q. What was the purpose of your visit there? A. To interview MR. FERRIE in relation to published reports about what he had said of the investigation, and whatever comments he might care to make. Q. How did you gain entrance? A. I rang the doorbell, lights were on, and as I got out of the cab I could see MR. FERRIE walking to the doors that led to the second floor porch that fronts the street. Q. Did he open the door for you personally? A. Yes. Q. Did he do that by electric lock release or manually? A. He came down the stairs and opened the door. Q. How was FERRIE dressed? A. Had on brown pants, white shirt open at the neck, he was barefoot. He said he was just about to go to bed when I pulled up. Q. Did he say he noticed you pull up or was he first aware of your presence when you rang the bell? A. Well, he didn't make reference to my pulling up but I could I could see him looking down at the street, as I got out of the cab. I told the cab to wait until he either consented to see me or turn me away because I didn't want to get stuck STATEMENT Page Two GEORGE LARDNER, JR. continued out there without transportation back to town. Q. How long did the cab wait until you released it? A. Oh, perhaps half a minute, I had paid him before I got out of the cab and had told him to wait till I waved or came back. Q. Was FERRIE friendly towards you? A. Yes, er, I had been out there earlier in the day when he wasn't there and had left a note under the door asking him to get in touch with me. Q. What was your first impression of FERRIE? A. Well, er, let me see, er, intelligent, well-versed guy and a broad range of subjects. He was in a good mood. Q. What was your first impression of his apartment? A. Kind of messy. He excused the condition of it, apologizing for the condition stating he had just moved in. Q. Where did you sit during your interview? A. I sat on a sort of old chair, living room chair, single seat. Q. Where did FERRIE sit? A. He sat mostly on a couch opposite me and against the wall. Q. Can you recall any particular or unusual statement or an- swer FERRIE gave? A. Looking back on it, he described himself as sort of moody, made a passing reference to it, and at another point he said in relation to, er, the assasination of President Kennedy, that a President isn't any better than anybody else. That any man who is killed deserves a full and complete investi- gation, as full and complete as is given the President. Q. Did FERRIE answer all of your questions? A. Yeah, he rambled quite a bit, I didn't get that many questions in. He would go into long discussions about various things. Philosophy, training, and, er, general outlook on the world. Q. Did FERRIE say anything to you about moods of depression or fear of any particular thing? A. He at various points mentioned that, as I recall it, he made a reference to manic-depressive moods, and, er, that he was concerned that some remarks he might make, if published, :- might trigger MR. GARRISON into making premature arrests. I asked him if he were worried and he said he wasn't. He let me into the apartment, er, with more or less the understanding I would read back to him the comments I intended to use. On the grounds he didn't want to make any problems for himself and that he wasn't particularly anxious to be interviewed. Q. Did FERRIE say when he experienced his last manic-depressive mood? A. No, no. He referred to it only in passing. Q. Your impression was that he was not in a manic-depressive mood during your interview. A. Oh, right, yeah, that's correct, that's my impression. Q. Did he talk about any of his friends? A. Of his, friends? He referred to JACK MARTIN, said he was sort of a courthouse habitue and semi-appointed private in- STATEMENT Page Three GEORGE LARDNER, JR. continued vestigator. That should be self-appointed investigator. Q. Did he go into detail about JACK MARTIN or anyone else? A. Not too much. Q. Did he at all? A. He said, at one point, that you, WILLIAM GURVICH, were well- acquainted with JACK MARTIN. Q. MARTIN, JACK MARTIN? A. Yes, JACK MARTIN. Q. Again, did he mention any names or refer to friends? A. He also referred to youngsters that he had befriend over the years. He described it as sort of a hobby, taking de- serving youngsters who are products of broken homes and helping them get ahead in life. He said he felt he had been pretty successful, that some had turned out doctors, mili- tary officers, and the like. Q. Did you notice any medication in the apartment? A. I noticed, particularly, a brown bottle that was standing on the piano near where we were sitting. It had a label on it but I don't recall what the medication was. Q. Was the bottle empty? A. I couldn't tell, the label covered most of the front. Q. Did FERRIE eat, drink or take any medication, liquid or otherwise, during your visit? A. He made a pot of coffee and we both had a cup? Q. Do you know if the coffee was already prepared or did he make it fresh during your visit? A. I think he made it fresh, he observed that it came out too strong. Q. What room were you in? A. The living room. Q. Did FERRIE receive any phone calls or make any calls during your visit? A. No. Q. Did anyone else come to his apartment during your visit? A. No. Q. Did FERRIE say if he was expecting anyone? A. No, he didn't say one way or the other. I take it he wasn't since he indicated he was about to go to bed as I drove up. Q. Did you ask him if he thought he was a suspect in any current investigation? A. I didn't put it that way. I asked him, as I mentioned before whether he was worried in light of the investigation. Q. Did FERRIE say, or indicate, that any of his friends or associates were worried about any current investigation? A. No, he didn't. Q. Did you ask him if he knew or was friendly with any person interviewed by the WARREN COMMISSION? STATEMENT page Four GEORGE LARDNER, JR. continued A. No, except for LEE HARVEY OSWALD. I only asked about OSWALD. Q. What was his reply? A. Oh, yes, right, he said no, he didn't know him and had no recollection of ever meeting him. I did ask him about a conversation he had earlier in the week with CARLOS BRING- Q. UIER and he acknowledged it had taken place. Q. Did he say what the discussed? A. BRINGUIER had told me what they had discussed. Q. What did BRINGUIER tell you? A. He said that FERRIE had asked him several questions in re- lation to the assasination of PRESIDENT KENNEDY. Q. What were the questions? A. Let me check my notes. One, any Americans or any Cubans that OSWALD had any association with in NEW ORLEANS. FERRIE asked BRINGUIER if he knew any. And two, if there is a con- spiracy, when did it start, the dates. FERRIE explained to me that he was conducting his own investigation because he didn't trust GARRISON'S investigation and didn't have much faith in the court system. Q. Was FERRIE at all nervous during your interview? A. He didn't appear to be, several times he would get up and walk around and we parted on what I thought was a cheerful note. Q. Did FERRIE express an opinion about recent publicity? A. He said he was the one who, by telling the STATES-ITEM that an investigation was indeed in progress over the kennedy assasination forced GARRISON to publicly acknow- ledge it. Q. Did he say if the local press was aware of the investiga- tion prior to that? A. I can't recall the sequence on that I think he indicated it was. I was under the impression it was. Q. Did FERRIE say if anyone was filtering confidential or classified information to him? A. Not in those terms. Q. Then how did he express it? A. He indicated that he felt he was in fair standings with the FBI, that they had thoroughly investigated any possible role that he may have had in the assasination and that they had found nothing wrong. Q. Did he say if he was receiving any information from our office, that is, the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, that he should not have? A. He said he had what he considered pretty good pipelines but he didn't specify who. Q. Did FERRIE express his opinion of the KENNEDY ASSASINATION? A. Yes, he said he thought there was just one assasin, that he had had his own doubts about this but resolved them only this Sunday. He said his doubts were based solely on the confusion over the autopsy report. Here's what he said. The shortcoming of the WARR N REPORT insofar as it would leave the door open to that speculation (plot) and did STATEMENT Page five GEORGE LARDNER, JR. continued cause me to feel there was a second assasin and therefore a plot. I found was the result of hastily collated material poor cross-checking and editing, and that confusion as far as I am concerned could have come only from the autopsy report and nothing else. NOTE: LARDNER in latter part of answer was quoting FERRIE. Q. Is there more? A. Yes. He also said QUOTE It was not until it occurred to me that the public post-mortem should have reflected the po- sition, not of the various wounds in a body when lying on a slab, but rather a body sitting in a position similar to what it was at the time of the shooting END QUOTE Parenthe- sis That I, FERRIE, Close Parenthesis resolve my doubts. NOTE: LARDNER finishing quote for FERRIE. A. (continuing) He did say he had given them a lot of leads or perhaps, more precisely points, to check out. That he had given them an exhaustive run-down of where he had been on his trip to TEXAS that afternoon: Q. What afternoon? A. Afternoon the PRESIDENT was killed. Said he had also given it to the DISTRICT ATTORNY'S OFFICE and that, as I recall it, it was at his insistence that the statement be given to the FBI, SECRET SERVICE, everybody. Q. Did he talk about his arrests of the past? A. I gathered only illusion he was making to arrests in past was his reference to youngsters he had helped and befriended. I took that to be his answer to what seems to be a common understanding. Q. Is there anything you can think of during your interview with DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE that might be of interest or assistance to the DISTRICT ATTORNEY? A. No, not off hand. Q. Did you want to add something? A. To finish the other answer, a common understanding or rather suspicion that these friendships might in any way be improper. Q. Will you describe your parting with FERRIE? A. I had been asking him to agree to publication a comment he had made during the interview. It related to the time he said he was questioned by the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE in the recent investigation last NOVEMBER. The substance of the comment was that when he was called in the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE said they wanted to run over the state- ment he had made in 1963 on the grounds that they had lost their copy. He said he replied that he would get the state- ment for them from the FBI. He said that the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S men told him QUOTE NO, DON'T DO THAT UNQUOTE. FERRIE replied that he would go to the FBI and get a copy of the statement. He said the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S men told him QUOTE DON'T SAY WE SENT YOU UNQUOTE. Q. Did FERRIE get that statement from the FBI? A. He said that when he went to the FBI their immediate re- sponse was OH THAT'S JACK MARTIN. STATEMENT Page Six GEORGE LARDNER, JR. continued FERRIE said that the DA'S investigation was touched off by JACK MARTIN. Q. Did FERRIE say if he got that statement? A. FERRIE said that as soon as they said JACK MARTIN with some disgust FERRIE abandoned the idea. Relating back to our parting. In any event, FERRIE did not want these comments used on the grounds he said that it might get him in the middle of a fuss between the FBI and the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE "end that it might trigger a QUOTE PREMATURE ARREST UNQUOTE. And he implied that this would be unfair. Q. Was FERRIE referring to himself? A. I did not think that he was. Q. Do you have any idea about whom he was referring? A. No. Q. What time did you leave FERRIE this morning? A. I left shortly, I think, before four a.m. Q. Did you call a cab? A. Yes. Q. What company. A. Yellow cab company. They came within a few minutes and I went back to the hotel. Q. Will you be available for the next day or so? A. Next day, pretty sure, or so, I don't know. Q. Do you feel that this was a reasonable and expected inter- view between you and me? A. Yes, except for the QUOTE ER'S UNQUOTE. Q. Was it made voluntarily? A. Yes. SIGNED: GEORGE Goy E. E. GURVICH WHG:wg MEMORANDUM April 5, 1967 TO: Jim Garrison - District Attorney FROM: William Gurvich Special Aide Subject: Freemason Island Fishing Camp On March 29, 1967, at 2:50 p.m., I arrived at Freemason Island by seaplane for the purpose of interviewing the operator of a fishing camp. This island is fifty miles southeast of New Orleans in the far eastern part of Louisiana. At Freemason I interviewed Mr. & Mrs. Eustis Veazey, owners and operators of the quarterboat Neptune, a commercial fishing camp. The New Orleans area address of the Veazey's is 2405 Octovia Street, Chalmette, Louisiana. This is the residence of their daughter Mrs. Oris Creighton and the phone number is 271-0974. There is a two-way marine radio on the Neptune. I pursued my investigation based on a confidential informant that David Ferrie had been on this island in July, 1965 and that one of the fishermen he flew there was Clay Shaw. My investigation revealed that Ferrie had been to this island at least three times prior to Hurricane Betsy on September 9, 1965. Both Veazeys identified photograph of David Ferrie and selected photographs of Guy Bannister and Clay Shaw and said they were familiar but could make no positive identification. Mrs. Veazey has never seen a picture of Clay Shaw as they re- ceive no newspapers on the island and their TV receiver has been broken since before Shaw's arrest. The first time Ferrie flew here he was alone and came to "explore" the facilities. On the second occasion he flew a party of fishermen to Freemason at the request of Veazey. Ferrie at that time operated out of COMM-AIR at New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Ferrie's third and last visit waa a day or two prior to July 11, 1965, at that time he had flown four fishermen to the island in a land plane, making two trips, On July 11, Ferrie telephoned Steve Littleton of Trans-Gulf Seaplane Service Corporation, asking the latter to send a seaplane to Freemason to pick up three fishermen as the lowering ceiling prevented him from doing so in a land plane. At 1400 hours on July 11, pilot Natt Milligan arrived at the island and brought back only two fishermen. Milligan described these fishermen to me as - 1. White male, 5'11", 55 - 58 years, grey hair, ruddy complexion as if sunburned. - 2 - Memorandum to Jim Garrison Cont'd. 2. White male, 5-6, early 50's, bald, tan complexion. Milligan brought these men to his base at Bayou Savage near Chef Menteur. The original Trans-Gulf log of July 11, 1965 was given to me and confirms the above. Several assorted photographs were shown to Milligan for possible recognition or identification. He selected one of Andrew Blackman and said he had seen this subject several times in the last three years around the Administration Building of New Orleans Lakefront Airport. Milligan then selected a photograph of Clay Shaw and said this was similar to one of the men he had picked up at Freemason Island for Ferrie. He said that when he arrived at the island these two men were in a small boat in the lagoon fishing and he taxied out to them to say they should hurry as a frontal system was approaching New Orleans. The taller of the two men sat in the rear of the plane. Milligan said he did not get a very good view of either of the men in a fully erect position. When they arrived at the seaplane base, Milligan left immediately and later learnedhis two passengers had afterwards been taken by car to the Lakefront Airport. Milligan is forty years of age and may be contacted at Trans- Gulf Seaplane Service Corporation, Route 6, Box 287-AC, New Orleans. All records, logs and guest registers on Freemason Island were destroyed by Hurricane Betsy on September 9, 1965. The fishing camp re-opened in April, 1966. I told him I would\nbe interested in seeing this gun to examine it and he informed\nme he had loaned it to a friend to go hunting. At first it\nappeared that the gun was not in New Orleans at this time but\nMENARD soon called me back to tell me his friend was not leaving\nuntil the next day. I immediately made plans to meet MENARD and\nsubstitute one of my personal rifles for his.\nAt 4:00 PM, 26 December 1966, I met MENARD on the aircraft\nparking ramp at New Orleans International Airport. He gave me\nhis rifle, which he had picked up from his friend since our last\ntelephone conversation, and I gave him my own Winchester Model\n70, .308 caliber rifle with a four-power Redfield scope and one\nbox of Winchester 150 grain cartridges for his friend's use.\nMENARD stated he had paid BEAUBOUEF $40.00 for the rifle.\nAt 4:40 PM, this date, I arrived at DISTRICT ATTORNEY JIM GARRI-\nSON'S office and turned the rifle over to him. This is a 30-06\ncaliber, Remington barrel and action, Fajen stock with Monte\nCarlo cheekpiece, Dacote 4-9X40 scope, Weaver mounts, good over-\nall condition. The serial number of this rifle is 4008967 (U.S.\nRemington).\nMENARD also told me BEAUBOUEF had offered to sell him a .357\ncaliber pistol on the Wednesday before Christmas. I suggested\nto MENARD that he purchase this pistol if he could.\nOn 27 December, at 10:00 AM, I arrived at JIM GARRISON'S office\nwith my photographic equipment and made several close-up Polaroid\npictures of this newly acquired rifle.\nOn this same date I learned that BEAUBOUEF had given his address\nas 2427 ALVAR STREET when picked up on 23 NOVEMBER 1963 at the\nresidence of DAVID FERRIE. In reality this was not his address\nand was probably used in an attempt to conceal the fact he was\nliving with FERRIE, a known homosexual.\nAt 2:00 PM, 27 December, MENARD called FERRIE at New Orleans\nLakefront Airport and asked that he have BEAUBOUEF call him.\nFERRIE said he expected to hear from BEAUBOUEF momentarily and\npage TWO\nMEMO - 28 December 1966\nGARRISON - GURVICH\nwould deliver the message.\nAt 6:30 PM, 27 December, MENARD reported to me that BEAUBOUEF\nwas flying to New Orleans International Airport from Lakefront\nAirport to deliver the .357 caliber pistol. I arrived at the\nInternational airport at 6:50 PM as BEAUBOUEF was landing.\nAt 6:58 PM, BEAUBOUEF and a male companion parked their aircraft\non the concrete ramp immediately in front of GENERAL AVIATION.\nThis was a CESSNA 150 (two place), blue and white, registration\nnumber N3916J. This is owned by SPREMICH ENTERPRISES, a private\ncharter, instruction and rental business at Lakefront Airport,\nowned by RUDY SPREMICH. SPREMICH formerly flew with National\nAir Lines, then worked for the Federal Aviation Agency, leaving\nthem when his division was transferred to Houston, Texas.\nBEAUBOUEF was wearing an open button-down sweater, gray slacks,\nsport shirt, no hat. His companion was a male caucasian, 5-10,\n160, blonde wavy hair, wearing a white, open, button-down sweater.\nThe latter constantly patted and fingered his hair in a rather\neffeminate way.\nBEAUBOUEF entered GENERAL AVIATION carrying a small box. His\ncompanion followed.\nat 7:10 PM, both came out with MENARD, spoke briefly outside\nthe building, then BEAUBOUEF and companion went to the rest room\narea where they remained three minutes. They came out, entered\nthe aircraft in which they had arrived, taxiied away from the\nramp and took off on runway 19 at 7:22 PM.\nAt this time the weather was overcast and it was raining. It is\nmy opinion that it was not \"Cessna 150\" weather.\nAt 7:17 PM MENARD gave me the pistol he had just purchased from\nBEAUBOUEF. This is an INTERCONTINENTAL ARMS .357 revolver,\nsingle action Frontier type, blue steel, brass frame handle and\ntrigger guard, with walnut grips, serial number 5361.\nOn 28 December, at 10:00 AM, I arrived in JIM GARRISON'S office\nand turned this gun over to him.\nOn this date I photographed the revolver taking close-up Polaroid\npictures. I then stripped the 30-06 rifle and scope and made 4X5\nand 35mm close-up's of the rifle and revolver. 8x10 black and\nwhite prints were then submitted to the District Attorney.\nWisin\nWILLIAM H. GURVICH\nWHG:wg\nMEMORANDUM\n30 December 1967\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON\nDISTRICT ATTORNEY.\nFROM: WILLIAM GURVICH\nINVESTIGATOR\nSUBJ: DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE - DISTINGUISHED HAIR-DO\nOn 29 December 1966, I visited New Orleans Lakefront Airport\nfor the purpose of gathering information about DAVID WILLIAM\nFERRIE. I thought the following would be of some interest.\nApproximately three months prior to this date, FERRIE expressed\na desire to look distinguished. In order to do this he clipped\nhair from a white mongrel dog and pasted them on his temples.\nHe apparently experienced a feeling of accomplishment as he\nwore them for several days.\nTo my knowledge this was not reported to the SPCA or the barber's\nunion.\nWILLIAM H. GURVICH\nWHG:wg\nMEMORANDUM\n15 February 1067\nTO:\nJIM GARRISON\nDISTRICT ATTORNEY\nFROM:\nWILLIAM GURVICH\nINVESTIGATOR\nSUBJ:\nDAVID WILLIAM FERRIE - 1957 INCIDENT\nAlthough I had known of DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE for several years\nprior to April 1957, this was my first encounter with him in\nany legal or criminal fashion. Excerpts of that incident follow.\nOn 17 April 1957, MRS. FRANK VILLAMEUR, wife of the owner of\nBELL RADIO & SUPPLY COMPANY, 2625 Tulane Avenue, relative to\nthefts of merchandise.\nOn 22 April I learned that an employee of the victimshad been\narrested in Los Angeles, California on 6 March 1951 (as a juven-\nile) and in New Orleans on 6 January 1954 for shoplifting. The\nemployee was MICHAEL OTTY CLYDE WAKELING, residing 209 VINET\nSTREET, METAIRIE, LOUISIANA.\nWhen first interrogated WAKELING denied knowledge of the missing\nmerchandise but later confessed when led to believe I was sum-\nmoning an eye-witness who would identify him as the one who was\nseen entering the rear of the victim's place of business after\nclosing hours.\nAt 3:10 PM, 22 April, I arrived with WAKELING and a Jefferson\nParish Deputy Sheriff at 209 VINET STREET where WAKELING pointed\nout items he admitted stealing. These items were one Voice of\nMusic mahognay phonograph, one Voice of Music amplifier, two sets\nof wrought iron table legs.\nWhen we arrived at 3:10 PM a male caucasian was washing a car\nin front of the address. As I glanced at him his peculiar hair\nand eyebrows were immediately noticeable. Looking further I\nrecognized him as DAVE FERRIE, a pilot with EASTERN AIR LINES.\nI asked him, \"Aren't you DAVE FERRIE?\" To which he replied, \"Yeah\"\nInside 209 VINET STREET the odor was atrocious. In a room that\nmight at one time have been a dining room were many cages with\nwhite mice. These cages were against each wall and stacked on\ntop of each other. There was no air conditioning or exhaust fan\nand the filth and odor were so sickening the Deputy, two New\nOrleans Detectives and I went outside and let WAKELING bring the\nstolen property to us. WAKELING explained the white mice by saying\nhe lived with FERRIE who was experimenting to develope a cure for\ncancer. I told him he had certainly developed one for sinus.\nAt 4:00 PM, 22 April 1957, WAKELING was charged with RS 14:67-69,\nAffidavit Number 156-584, Item No. D8605-57, First District, Zone\n\"0\". Total value: $239.63\nWAKELING'S NOPD BOI number is 68446. BOI Los Angeles is 162904.\nWEG:wg\nWILLIAM H. NITSCHKE'S DESCRIPTION OF\nI have on this read the January 17, 1967, statement of I. E.\nNitschke and wish to make the following note.\nOn page three, paragraph one, NITSCHKE identified NOPD BOI\nPhoto #107062 of DAVID FERRIE as being one of the persons he had\nmet in the late GUY BANNISTER'S office. During NITSCHKE'S\ndescription and discussion of FERRIE, he added that the coat\nworn in the photograph looked like the one worn by FERRIE when\nhe saw him in person.\nYour attention is directed to my report of 27 January 1967. On\npage three, paragraph five, aircraft mechanic FRED LENZ, when\ninterviewed by me. at the WHITE ROCK AIRPORT in Dallas, Texas,\nselected this same photograph of FERRIE and said he had seen him\nat that airport, LENZ also mentioned a sport jacket (coat) that\nwas \"checkered, brown and light gray or white.\" This description\nis very similar to the coat worn by FERRIE in the photograph.\nWelciam W Junior\nWILLIAM H. How did you gain entrance?\nA. I rang the doorbell, lights were on, and as I got out of the\ncab I could see MR. FERRIE walking to the doors that led to\nthe second floor porch that fronts the street.\nQ. Did he open the door for you personally?\nA. Yes.\nQ. Did he do that by electric lock release or manually?\nA. He came down the stairs and opened the door.\nQ. How was FERRIE dressed?\nA. Had on brown pants, white shirt open at the neck, he was\nbarefoot. He said he was just about to go to bed when I\npulled up.\nQ. Did he say he noticed you pull up or was he first aware of\nyour presence when you rang the bell?\nA. Well, he didn't make reference to my pulling up but I could\nI could see him looking down at the street, as I got out of\nthe cab. I told the cab to wait until he either consented to\nsee me or turn me away because I didn't want to get stuck\nSTATEMENT\nPage Two\nGEORGE LARDNER, JR.\ncontinued\nout there without transportation back to town.\nQ. How long did the cab wait until you released it?\nA. Oh, perhaps half a minute, I had paid him before I got out\nof the cab and had told him to wait till I waved or came\nback.\nQ. Was FERRIE friendly towards you?\nA. Yes, er, I had been out there earlier in the day when he\nwasn't there and had left a note under the door asking him\nto get in touch with me.\nQ. What was your first impression of FERRIE?\nA. Well, er, let me see, er, intelligent, well-versed guy and\na broad range of subjects. He was in a good mood.\nQ. What was your first impression of his apartment?\nA. Kind of messy. He excused the condition of it, apologizing\nfor the condition stating he had just moved in.\nQ. Where did you sit during your interview?\nA. I sat on a sort of old chair, living room chair, single\nseat.\nQ. Where did FERRIE sit?\nA. He sat mostly on a couch opposite me and against the wall.\nQ. Can you recall any particular or unusual statement or an-\nswer FERRIE gave?\nA. Looking back on it, he described himself as sort of moody,\nmade a passing reference to it, and at another point he said\nin relation to, er, the assasination of President Kennedy,\nthat a President isn't any better than anybody else. That\nany man who is killed deserves a full and complete investi-\ngation, as full and complete as is given the President.\nQ. Did FERRIE answer all of your questions?\nA. Yeah, he rambled quite a bit, I didn't get that many questions\nin. He would go into long discussions about various things.\nPhilosophy, training, and, er, general outlook on the world.\nQ. Did FERRIE say anything to you about moods of depression or\nfear of any particular thing?\nA. He at various points mentioned that, as I recall it, he made\na reference to manic-depressive moods, and, er, that he was\nconcerned that some remarks he might make, if published,\n:-\nmight trigger MR. GARRISON into making premature arrests.\nI asked him if he were worried and he said he wasn't. He let\nme into the apartment, er, with more or less the understanding\nI would read back to him the comments I intended to use. On\nthe grounds he didn't want to make any problems for himself\nand that he wasn't particularly anxious to be interviewed.\nQ. Did FERRIE say when he experienced his last manic-depressive\nmood?\nA. No, no. He referred to it only in passing.\nQ. Your impression was that he was not in a manic-depressive\nmood during your interview.\nA.\nOh, right, yeah, that's correct, that's my impression.\nQ. Did he talk about any of his friends?\nA. Of his, friends? He referred to JACK MARTIN, said he was\nsort of a courthouse habitue and semi-appointed private in-\nSTATEMENT\nPage Three\nGEORGE LARDNER, JR.\ncontinued\nvestigator. That should be self-appointed investigator.\nQ. Did he go into detail about JACK MARTIN or anyone else?\nA. Not too much.\nQ. Did he at all?\nA. He said, at one point, that you, WILLIAM GURVICH, were well-\nacquainted with JACK MARTIN.\nQ. MARTIN, JACK MARTIN?\nA. Yes, JACK MARTIN.\nQ. Again, did he mention any names or refer to friends?\nA. He also referred to youngsters that he had befriend over\nthe years. He described it as sort of a hobby, taking de-\nserving youngsters who are products of broken homes and\nhelping them get ahead in life. He said he felt he had been\npretty successful, that some had turned out doctors, mili-\ntary officers, and the like.\nQ. Did you notice any medication in the apartment?\nA. I noticed, particularly, a brown bottle that was standing\non the piano near where we were sitting. It had a label on\nit but I don't recall what the medication was.\nQ. Was the bottle empty?\nA. I couldn't tell, the label covered most of the front.\nQ. Did FERRIE eat, drink or take any medication, liquid or\notherwise, during your visit?\nA. He made a pot of coffee and we both had a cup?\nQ. Do you know if the coffee was already prepared or did he\nmake it fresh during your visit?\nA. I think he made it fresh, he observed that it came out too\nstrong.\nQ. What room were you in?\nA. The living room.\nQ. Did FERRIE receive any phone calls or make any calls during\nyour visit?\nA. No.\nQ. Did anyone else come to his apartment during your visit?\nA. No.\nQ. Did FERRIE say if he was expecting anyone?\nA. No, he didn't say one way or the other. I take it he wasn't\nsince he indicated he was about to go to bed as I drove up.\nQ. Did you ask him if he thought he was a suspect in any\ncurrent investigation?\nA. I didn't put it that way. I asked him, as I mentioned before\nwhether he was worried in light of the investigation.\nQ. Did FERRIE say, or indicate, that any of his friends or\nassociates were worried about any current investigation?\nA.\nNo, he didn't.\nQ. Did you ask him if he knew or was friendly with any person\ninterviewed by the WARREN COMMISSION?\nSTATEMENT\npage Four\nGEORGE LARDNER, JR.\ncontinued\nA. No, except for LEE HARVEY OSWALD. I only asked about OSWALD.\nQ. What was his reply?\nA. Oh, yes, right, he said no, he didn't know him and had no\nrecollection of ever meeting him. I did ask him about a\nconversation he had earlier in the week with CARLOS BRING-\nQ. UIER and he acknowledged it had taken place.\nQ. Did he say what the discussed?\nA. BRINGUIER had told me what they had discussed.\nQ. What did BRINGUIER tell you?\nA. He said that FERRIE had asked him several questions in re-\nlation to the assasination of PRESIDENT KENNEDY.\nQ. What were the questions?\nA. Let me check my notes. One, any Americans or any Cubans\nthat OSWALD had any association with in NEW ORLEANS. FERRIE\nasked BRINGUIER if he knew any. And two, if there is a con-\nspiracy, when did it start, the dates. FERRIE explained to\nme that he was conducting his own investigation because he\ndidn't trust GARRISON'S investigation and didn't have much\nfaith in the court system.\nQ. Was FERRIE at all nervous during your interview?\nA.\nHe didn't appear to be, several times he would get up and\nwalk around and we parted on what I thought was a cheerful\nnote.\nQ. Did FERRIE express an opinion about recent publicity?\nA. He said he was the one who, by telling the STATES-ITEM\nthat an investigation was indeed in progress over the\nkennedy assasination forced GARRISON to publicly acknow-\nledge it.\nQ. Did he say if the local press was aware of the investiga-\ntion prior to that?\nA. I can't recall the sequence on that I think he indicated\nit was. I was under the impression it was.\nQ. Did FERRIE say if anyone was filtering confidential or\nclassified information to him?\nA. Not in those terms.\nQ. Then how did he express it?\nA. He indicated that he felt he was in fair standings with the\nFBI, that they had thoroughly investigated any possible role\nthat he may have had in the assasination and that they had\nfound nothing wrong.\nQ. Did he say if he was receiving any information from our\noffice, that is, the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE, that he\nshould not have?\nA. He said he had what he considered pretty good pipelines but\nhe didn't specify who.\nQ. Did FERRIE express his opinion of the KENNEDY ASSASINATION?\nA. Yes, he said he thought there was just one assasin, that he\nhad had his own doubts about this but resolved them only\nthis Sunday. He said his doubts were based solely on the\nconfusion over the autopsy report. Here's what he said.\nThe shortcoming of the WARR N REPORT insofar as it would\nleave the door open to that speculation (plot) and did\nSTATEMENT\nPage five\nGEORGE LARDNER, JR.\ncontinued\ncause me to feel there was a second assasin and therefore\na plot. I found was the result of hastily collated material\npoor cross-checking and editing, and that confusion as far\nas I am concerned could have come only from the autopsy\nreport and nothing else.\nNOTE: LARDNER in latter part of answer was quoting FERRIE.\nQ. Is there more?\nA.\nYes. He also said QUOTE It was not until it occurred to me\nthat the public post-mortem should have reflected the po-\nsition, not of the various wounds in a body when lying on\na slab, but rather a body sitting in a position similar to\nwhat it was at the time of the shooting END QUOTE Parenthe-\nsis That I, FERRIE, Close Parenthesis resolve my doubts.\nNOTE: LARDNER finishing quote for FERRIE.\nA.\n(continuing)\nHe did say he had given them a lot of\nleads or perhaps, more precisely points, to check out.\nThat he had given them an exhaustive run-down of where he\nhad been on his trip to TEXAS that afternoon:\nQ.\nWhat afternoon?\nA. Afternoon the PRESIDENT was killed. Said he had also given\nit to the DISTRICT ATTORNY'S OFFICE and that, as I recall\nit, it was at his insistence that the statement be given to\nthe FBI, SECRET SERVICE, everybody.\nQ. Did he talk about his arrests of the past?\nA. I gathered only illusion he was making to arrests in past\nwas his reference to youngsters he had helped and befriended.\nI took that to be his answer to what seems to be a common\nunderstanding.\nQ. Is there anything you can think of during your interview\nwith DAVID WILLIAM FERRIE that might be of interest or\nassistance to the DISTRICT ATTORNEY?\nA.\nNo, not off hand.\nQ. Did you want to add something?\nA. To finish the other answer, a common understanding or\nrather suspicion that these friendships might in any way\nbe improper.\nQ.\nWill you describe your parting with FERRIE?\nA.\nI had been asking him to agree to publication a comment\nhe had made during the interview. It related to the time\nhe said he was questioned by the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE\nin the recent investigation last NOVEMBER. The substance of\nthe comment was that when he was called in the DISTRICT\nATTORNEY'S OFFICE said they wanted to run over the state-\nment he had made in 1963 on the grounds that they had lost\ntheir copy. He said he replied that he would get the state-\nment for them from the FBI. He said that the DISTRICT\nATTORNEY'S men told him QUOTE NO, DON'T DO THAT UNQUOTE.\nFERRIE replied that he would go to the FBI and get a copy\nof the statement. He said the DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S men told\nhim QUOTE DON'T SAY WE SENT YOU UNQUOTE.\nQ.\nDid FERRIE get that statement from the FBI?\nA.\nHe said that when he went to the FBI their immediate re-\nsponse was OH THAT'S JACK MARTIN.\nSTATEMENT\nPage Six\nGEORGE LARDNER, JR.\ncontinued\nFERRIE said that the DA'S investigation was touched off\nby JACK MARTIN.\nQ. Did FERRIE say if he got that statement?\nA. FERRIE said that as soon as they said JACK MARTIN with\nsome disgust FERRIE abandoned the idea.\nRelating back to our parting. In any event, FERRIE did not\nwant these comments used on the grounds he said that it\nmight get him in the middle of a fuss between the FBI and\nthe DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE \"end that it might trigger\na QUOTE PREMATURE ARREST UNQUOTE. And he implied that this\nwould be unfair.\nQ. Was FERRIE referring to himself?\nA. I did not think that he was.\nQ. Do you have any idea about whom he was referring?\nA. No.\nQ. What time did you leave FERRIE this morning?\nA. I left shortly, I think, before four a.m.\nQ.\nDid you call a cab?\nA. Yes.\nQ.\nWhat company.\nA.\nYellow cab company. They came within a few minutes and I\nwent back to the hotel.\nQ. Will you be available for the next day or so?\nA. Next day, pretty sure, or so, I don't know.\nQ. Do you feel that this was a reasonable and expected inter-\nview between you and me?\nA. Yes, except for the QUOTE ER'S UNQUOTE.\nQ.\nWas it made voluntarily?\nA. Yes.\nSIGNED: GEORGE Goy E. E. This island is fifty miles\nsoutheast of New Orleans in the far eastern part of\nLouisiana.\nAt Freemason I interviewed Mr. & Mrs. Eustis Veazey, owners\nand operators of the quarterboat Neptune, a commercial\nfishing camp. The New Orleans area address of the Veazey's\nis 2405 Octovia Street, Chalmette, Louisiana. This is the\nresidence of their daughter Mrs. Oris Creighton and the phone\nnumber is 271-0974. There is a two-way marine radio on the\nNeptune.\nI pursued my investigation based on a confidential informant\nthat David Ferrie had been on this island in July, 1965 and\nthat one of the fishermen he flew there was Clay Shaw. My\ninvestigation revealed that Ferrie had been to this island at\nleast three times prior to Hurricane Betsy on September 9,\n1965. Both Veazeys identified photograph of David Ferrie and\nselected photographs of Guy Bannister and Clay Shaw and said\nthey were familiar but could make no positive identification.\nMrs. Veazey has never seen a picture of Clay Shaw as they re-\nceive no newspapers on the island and their TV receiver has been\nbroken since before Shaw's arrest.\nThe first time Ferrie flew here he was alone and came to\n\"explore\" the facilities. On the second occasion he flew a\nparty of fishermen to Freemason at the request of Veazey.\nFerrie at that time operated out of COMM-AIR at New Orleans\nLakefront Airport.\nFerrie's third and last visit waa a day or two prior to\nJuly 11, 1965, at that time he had flown four fishermen to the\nisland in a land plane, making two trips, On July 11, Ferrie\ntelephoned Steve Littleton of Trans-Gulf Seaplane Service\nCorporation, asking the latter to send a seaplane to Freemason\nto pick up three fishermen as the lowering ceiling prevented\nhim from doing so in a land plane.\nAt 1400 hours on July 11, pilot Natt Milligan arrived at the\nisland and brought back only two fishermen. Milligan\ndescribed these fishermen to me as -\n1. White male, 5'11\", 55 - 58 years,\ngrey hair, ruddy complexion as if\nsunburned.\n- 2 -\nMemorandum to Jim Garrison Cont'd.\n2. White male, 5-6, early 50's,\nbald, tan complexion.\nMilligan brought these men to his base at Bayou Savage near\nChef Menteur.\nThe original Trans-Gulf log of July 11, 1965 was given to me\nand confirms the above.\nSeveral assorted photographs were shown to Milligan for possible\nrecognition or identification. He selected one of Andrew\nBlackman and said he had seen this subject several times in\nthe last three years around the Administration Building of\nNew Orleans Lakefront Airport. Milligan then selected a\nphotograph of Clay Shaw and said this was similar to one of\nthe men he had picked up at Freemason Island for Ferrie. He\nsaid that when he arrived at the island these two men were\nin a small boat in the lagoon fishing and he taxied out to them\nto say they should hurry as a frontal system was approaching\nNew Orleans. The taller of the two men sat in the rear of the\nplane. Milligan said he did not get a very good view of either\nof the men in a fully erect position. When they arrived at the\nseaplane base, Milligan left immediately and later learnedhis\ntwo passengers had afterwards been taken by car to the Lakefront\nAirport.\nMilligan is forty years of age and may be contacted at Trans-\nGulf Seaplane Service Corporation, Route 6, Box 287-AC, New\nOrleans.\nAll records, logs and guest registers on Freemason Island were\ndestroyed by Hurricane Betsy on September 9, 1965.
