Hardboiled George Golding's special
prohibition squad shot a fleeing suspect
yesterday in the City Hall Square
building
When the smoke of battle had
cleared and Merle Adams, 1348 Hood
avenue, suspected of belonging to a
booze syndicate, had been sent to a .
hospital; when the tenants of the raid-
ed office building, which is across from
the County building, had recovered
from their terror; when Clark and
Randolph street had resumed its sum-
mer afternoon poise; then it was
learned that the following events had
taken place:
The agents raided the officés in
rooms 803 and 804. Adams, who first
gave the name of Morris Green, ran
out after his fist connected with the
jaw of Agent Frank Evans.
Agent Arthur Franklin, not four
feet behind the fugitive, shot him
and Adams rolled downstairs to the
seventh floor.
Agent Edward Gill ran to the sev.
enth floor where two witnesses said
they saw a blackjack swing several
times on Adams' head.
Get Out, Police Are Told.
Back to the eighth floor, where
women were cowering under desks
the prisoner was taken and the agents
attempted first aid to staunch the
flow of blood.
Get into your offices: we're gov
ernment men," those in the hallways
were told.
Get out; we don't need you," police
were told.
Half an hour later a young womar
thought some one ought to call á
doctor, and she did. Then came nèwe
paper men and camera men.
Get out; we'll smash your
eras and your faces," the
ordered.
