has manufactured brick.
The contract awarded is for con-
struction of the railway and plant
structures at the Stickney plant and
was awarded to Hanson Brothers,
general contractors. The contract is
made pliable enough, the state's at-
torney charges, to take care of the
unnecessary middleman-the Consol-
idated company-ano his extra profit.
Same Old Contract.
The section of the contract which
refers to "brick as made and sold
by the Consolidated company of Chi-
cago, III.," is the same as used by
the old regime, brick dealers and
manufacturers assert. The Consoli-
dated company's brick is purchased
from Athena Brick company, East
Nelsonville, O., for which Benner &
Marshall are the Chicago agents.
Consequently, it is pointed out, the
Consolidated company must purchase
the brick from Benner & Marshall,
which firm in turn buys from the
Athena company. The specifications
state the following prices: $28 a
thousand for exterior face brick, $25
for interior face brick, $60 for stand-
ard glazed brick and $100 for bull-
nose glazed brick.
Prices of $25 and $28, stipulated in
the contract for face brick, are con-
sidered higher than the standard
price, the delivery point being taken
into consideration, according to brick
manufacturers. However, the sani-
tary district's unusual demand for
perfect brick may offset this in part,
it is said. However, the price range
is up to $4 a thousand above a close
market quotations, and since the culls
in the best grade of brick are few
that difference is not believed nec-
essary. The glazed brick stipula-
tions are about average, brick manu-
facturers say.
