Mystery Surrounds Trip.
Mystery attended the motor trip to
Detroit in view of an utterance of
a
Moore during a momentary return to
consciousness. According to the
chauffeur, he was driving Bull and
Magruder to Detroit, and had to
get there or else the federal men
would be after them.'
Although the accident occurred at
daybreak yesterday, word of it was
not received here until last night,
Mrs. Bull and her sons immediately
left their suite in the Drake hotel
and departed for Coldwater. Mr
Bull's attorney, and a personal physi
cian accompanied them.
According to Sheriff R. L. Green
of Branch county and his deputy,
George Miller, the accident appeared
unavoidable. The Bull car was trav
eling up a hill at a high speed and
struck the stalled truck.
NARCOTIC RAID A FIASCO.
The mystery of the detention by
narcotic agents of Mr. Bull and Mrs
Mabelle Horlick Sidley last Saturday
simmered down yesterday to specu-
lation as to the identity of those who
took the federal sleuths on a snipe
hunting expedition.
Following the secret inquisition in
the Transportation building Friday
night and Saturday morning, Assist-
ant United States Attorney Daniel
Anderson and the narcotic opera
tives admitted they had found no evi
aence to justiLy their suspicions of
an illicit traffic, M.r. Anderson went
so far yesterday as to declare:
"I am convinced that this whole
thing was a blunder on the part of
the government.'
Who Inspired the Raid.
This suggested that some person or
persons with a motive best known to
themselves had inspired the raid on
the gold coast apartments and the
questioning of Mr. Bull and Mrs. Sid-
ley, and a canvass of the various
branches of the government disclosed
that such was the case.
Mr. Bull, whose biographical sketch
occupies 300 words in the British
Who's Who, had been suspected of
everything from hating babies to put-
ting butter on his oatmeal, the private
sleuths told the federal department
heads. The immigration officials were
asked to find out whether he, as a
Canadian, had a good reason to be in
this country. All this, of course, be-
fore the automobile accident of yes-
terday morning.
/
The income tax experts were so-
licited. Maybe Mr. Bull had not ac-
counted to Uncle Sam for his reputedly
enormous revenue. These departments
dismissed the sleuths wath tolerant
amusement. But, not so with the
narcotic operatives.\
