November 3, 1964, was election day. The President and Mrs. Johnson began the day at the LBJ Ranch, leaving in the morning to go to Johnson City and vote. After watching early election returns on television at the Ranch, they went to Austin, Texas, by helicopter. Landing at the Austin Civic [Municipal] Auditorium, they went by motorcade to the Driskill Hotel where they were greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. Later in the evening, the Johnsons attended a party hosted by Texas Governor and Mrs. John Connally, visited Senator Ralph Yarborough's campaign headquarters, and returned to the Driskill.
