On March 12, 1965, as civil rights demonstrations continued in Selma, Alabama, President Johnson began his day meeting with an informal civil rights group headed by Reverend Walter Fauntroy of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. In the afternoon he met with members of the National Council of Church's Commission on Race and Religion. Later in the afternoon, the Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach met with the President, Vice President Hubert Humphrey, Senators Herman Talmadge and Sam Ervin, and several aides to discuss developments in Selma. During the afternoon local police arrested several demonstrators protesting at the northwest gate of the White House. That afternoon, the President also met with Laurance Rockefeller, Chairman of the White House Conference on Natural Beauty; met with the Presidents of the Railroad Brotherhood; visited with Lord Harlech (David Ormsby Gore), the Ambassador to the United States from Great Britain; and met with five newly-designated United States Ambassadors.
