Source Description

On August 6, 1965, at a ceremony in the Capitol Building, the President signed the Voting Rights Act of 1965, guaranteeing black citizens the right to vote. In his remarks President Johnson said, "There were those who said this is an old injustice, and there is no need to hurry. But 95 years have passed since the 15th amendment gave all Negroes the right to vote. And the time for waiting is gone." Earlier in the day the President had met with civil rights leaders to discuss a White House conference to the held in the fall, "To Fulfill These Rights.," and he had met with Treasury and State department advisors about the British economic crisis. Late in the afternoon, he met with the Foreign Minister of Ghana Alex Quaison-Sackey who delivered a letter from Ghana's President, Kwame Nkrumah. The President ended the day by going to Camp David.
