COMMITTEE ON ARMED SERVICES
February 8, 1949
My dear Mr. Farley:
I have received the /resolution of the Bexar County
Central Council of the American Legion, transmitted by
you, and I note with interest that you make no reference
to the humiliation and embarrassment caused to the family
of Felix Longoria by actions of Mr. Kennedy of the Rice
Funeral Home.
My only action in the case was to inform the widow
that she could, as the next of kin, have her husband buried
in the National Military Cemetery at Arlington, Va., or at
Fort Sam Houston, if, she so desired. I did this after I
was informed that Mr. Kennedy had denied the use of his
chapel for the reburial services because "whites might ob-
ject."
I do not know what your "competent, loyal, and un-
biased" inyestigators found at Three Rivers although I
would very mich appreciate seeing a copy of their report.
I do know that on January 10, before I ever knew of the
case, Mr. Kennedy was quoted in Associated Press dispatches
printed in Texas newspaper's as saying that he had denied
the family use of his chabel becarise "whites might object."
I know, also, that he later said/that hé denied use of the
chapel because of "Longoria family troubles, and that he
finally admitted he had said things in conversation with
Dr. Hector Garcia of Corpus Christi which he "regretted".
Out of which, it still remains that hie denied use of the
chapel for the reburial services of an American Boldier.
The criticism which has been foiced has been voiced
against Mr. Kennedy's action, which was the source of the
harm and injustice involved. Personally I am (proud to
have shared, in a small way, in relieving the hurt done
to the Longoria family.
Sinceraly,
Lyndon B. Johnson
Mr. R. H. Farley, Secretary-Treasurer
Bexar County Council, American Legion
