OF GOOD NEIGHBOR COMMISSION R. E. SMITH. CHAIRMAN. HOUSTON LLOYO M. BENTSEN, MISSION OF TEXAS BISHOP c. E. BYRNE, GALVESTON H. H. COFFIELD, ROCKDALE AUSTIN HUGH A. L. HALFF, SAN ANTONIO STATE CAPITOL KARL HOBLITZELLE. DALLAS AUSTIN 11, TEXAS DORRANCE b. RODERICK. EL PASO GUY 1. WARREN, Conpus CHRISTI 2109 Second National Bank Building GENERAL J. M. WAINWRIGHT. SAN ANTONIO Houston 2, Texas 17 January 1949 Dr. Hector P. Garcia 3024 Morgan Avenue Corpus Christi, Texas Dear Doctor: After talking to you by 'phone and conforming to the ideas that were expressed at that time, I have these suggestions to make to you. We all agree that the happening at Three Rivers is to be regretted, and we must bear in mind that the reputation of Texas will be at stake in history's recording of our handling of this very delicate matter. If you will talk to the widow of Felix Longoria and ask her 1f she would be agreeable to a change of plans whereby this American soldier's body would be brought back to Texas for reburial at Three Rivers, or at least in Texas, that I will assure her, and the Governor will do everything possible to show her that he approves of this action, that if she and other members of the family care to go to Washington, we will arrange for all military honors along National levels to be carried out in Washington and in her presence, but bring the Hero's body back to Texas where it should be, and would have been had it not been for whatever action that caused all of this trouble. I am not condoning anybody and I regret it as much as anyone could regret anything of this sort; but bear the thought in mind that Texas and al Texans and the children of Texans now living will feel the effect [1 of 2]
