Re: Folix Longoria
Summary of Conversations with lir. Paul J. Reveloy of the State Department.
On January 13, after the story of the Longoria incident appoarod on
the front page of the Now York Timos, Mr. Paul J. Reveloy, head of
the Mercican Affairs of the State Dopartmont called noand anicod ne to
extend to Senator Johncon his congratulations on hia action in arranging
for the burial of Felix Longoria in the National Arlington Cemetery.
lr. Reveley stated that it was a nost unfortunato incident which maght
have far reaching recults, and he was particularly ppoud of the nation that
had been talcon because he thought it would have a salutory effect
in our relations with Nexico.
On I believe the 14th of January, Mr. Reveloy ealled no back and said
that he had received a call fron the Mexican Anbeasador about the incident
and that he had attempted to rolay all the information that ho could
to Ambassador De La Colino. That the Ambessador was axtremoly interested
in the incidant because of the imponding agreement" betwroon
the United States and Medico. Mx. Reveley enid that be had explained
to the Ambansador the faoto as ho Innew them bat mo if X would be
good enough to call Ambossedor De La colino and tell hin t ho story.
I
told Nin that I would be happy to do 80, and in every way that I
possibly could tay to explaire to the Ambassador that the incident
should not be a reflection on the people of Throo Rivera, Live Oak
County or the State of Texas. That 1t was maxely en isolatod caso
which was indeed regrotable but that the action talcon by
Kennedy
of the Rico Panoral Hone in no way reflected the feoling of the vast
number of to the Texans of extraction.
The Ambansador was extronoly courteous and extremoly complimentary
to the action taloon by Senator Johnson and anicod that X convey to
the Senator his profound thankes for hãs courageous action in the natter
and that he was most happy that arrangements had been worked out
for the burial in Arlington National Cenetery. He asiced if ve
would be kind onough to koop him informed as to the date, etc. of the
burial inapruch as he wanted to attend to place a wreath at the burial.
I told hin that I would be happy to lopep him so advised. Ho Licowine
told mo that he would zelay the information that I had given hin
to the Minister of State in Mexico with whon ho was going to talk in
a short timo ( A had this information since Reveley had told me
the reason the had called hin was in order to get all in-
formation possible since ho was going to talle to the Ministor of State
in approxicately 30 minutes).
Innediately after talicing to the Anbassador, I called lir. Reveley
back and told him of our conversation, and he was highly pleased
with the Ambassador's reaction, and the fact that he was going
