concorning the returial of an Amorican soldior.
My part in this matter was small, but I lonow that

On January 11 at 8:49 I recoived a vire from
the President of the GI Forma at Corpus Christi sayings "In direct
conversation, the funeral home sanager, T. W Kermedy, stated that
ha would not arzange for funcral services and use of his facilities
bocause, ho said, tother whito people object to use of the funeral
home by peoplo of liexiean origin'. II
Upon receipt of this vire, I telephoned the Congrossman
from the District and anleed hin to ascortain the facto for ne if it
was possible to do so. Ho assued no ho would place a call to cortain
peoplo in Three Rivers and give no a report. At noon that day I
discussed this with some of my colleagues in Congress and with sona
officiala in the Department of the Anny chazged with the responsibility
of reburial for tiaz II veterans. At 5:30 that afternoon, I chociced
again with the Congressman and found that ho had been unable to ro-
ceive a report from Thace Rivers.
I then placed a long distence telephone enll to Tencas
and talieed to taro diainterested, objectivo persons who were familier
with the facts. They told ne (1) that the newspapers in hnd
already carried em Associated Pross story saying, e A funeral home
at Three Rávers, has refused to allou the body of a
soldier in action to enter* the homa because tho whitos won't
lice it. The soldiex is Felix Longoria, in the
in 1945. The body is en route hores. T. Kermody, monager of the
Rice Funcral Home told a Corpus Christi reported lionday
by telophone that tue just neves malco a practice of letting then
(Latin Apericans) use the chapel, and wro don't want to stert now. Host
of then don't vant the chapol service'. 1's and (2) they had both checked
the facts and found this to be taruo.
