January the Fifteenth 1949 ly dear Mrs. Longoria: It was impossible for me to express to you in my telegram yesterday the deep sympathy I feel for you in this hour. I am honored to have some small share in maling possible your husband's reburial in Arlington National Cemetery, where many of our most honored heroes lie buried. I know your heart would be warmed if you could read and hear the many, many kind and thoughtful expressions of unselfish sympathy which have come to my office. A family from San Antonio and another from El Paso called to tell me they would like to have you stay in their homes, if you could come here for the services. Others have called to ask if they might pay for your travel expenses from your home to Washington. We want to be helpful to you in every way possible. Just for your information, I am enclos- ing soue information about the Arlington Cemetery and about the funerals conducted there. I feel you will be interested in this. Of course, as you lonow, the boat bearing your husband's body did not arrive in San Francisco until yesterday. It will be some time yet before the body reaches Washington, but the proper officials have promised to notify us soon about the date of arrival and when the funeral may be held. Tie will notify you, so that you can make the final decisions. I would like to know, however, if you can come. My only desire is to be helpful, when- ever and however you call upon me. Your wishes will guide me in all that I do, and I will be glad to do all that I possibly can. With my heartfelt sympathy for you and your family. Sincerely, Lyndon B. Johnson lfr.
