Knowing I had no authority over civilian funeral
homes, but realizing I had a responsibility to every American
soldier who ever fought in the uniform of his country, I at 7 ''clock
that night answered the wire that had been sent to me some 11 hours
earlier by stating that I had no authority over a funeral home but
informing the family that any soldier could be buried in a National
military cemetery, and if they desired, that could be arranged at
Ft. Sam Houston or Arlington. I released no statements on the matter
and said nothing further until twenty-four hours later when I learned
that statements had been issued in Texas, and the funeral hone had
said that II never conducted a funeral of this kind and there is
trouble in the family."
My position on this matter all along has been not
to engage in an argument with the Chamber of Commerce, the local
banker, or any other people who have interested themselves in what
I consider a purely private matter for the family. I have said to
the family time and time again, and to all who have contacted me,
that the soldier would be buried where his next of kin desired, and
nothing I have said or done has been in criticism of any individual.
The time has not yet come, however, when as a member
of the United States Senate ill refuse to furnish a constituent
information he is entitled to or will be afraid to assist a widow
of a veteran in having that veteran buried wherever she may choose.
I regret, as you do, all the criticism that has resulted and all the
interference that has taken place, but Ifeel that no just criticism
can be made of the fact that I replied to a wire and only gave in-
formation that any serviceman or his family is entitled to.
