I have received the resolution by the Bexan Country Cental
of the American Legion transmitted by you and I am glad to
Council
know of the interest of the American Legion in the true
facts concerning the reburial of an American soldier.
My part in this matter was small, but I know
that you and other veterans who are members of your organi-
zation would like to have the facts concerning it. On
Jan.11
at 8:49A.M.I received a wire from the President
of the GI Forum at Corpus Christi saying: "Quote-part
sara
about refusal of burial because whites might object.!
Upon receipt of this wire I telephoned the Congressman
from the District and asked him to ascertain the facts
for me if it was pessible to do so. He assured me he
would place a call to certain people in Three Rivers and
give me a report. At noon that day I discussed this
with some of my colleagyes in Congress and with some officiale
Pur
in the Department) Charged with the responsibility
of reburial for World War II veterans. At 3:30 that
afternoon I checked again with the Congressman and found
that he had been unable to receive a report from Three
Rivers.
I then placed a long distance telephone call
ap
to Texas and talked to two disinterested, objective persons
who were familiar with the facts. They told me (1) that
an
the newspapers in Texas had already carried the story quating-
the funeral home as saying "Quete from FtvWorth Star-Felegran
AP dispatch " and (2) they had both checked the facts and
found this to be true.
Knowing 1 had no authority over civilian funeral
homes, but realising 1 had a responsibility to every American
soldier who ever fought in the uniform of his country, I at
7 o'clock that night answered the wire that had been sent
to me some 11 hours earlier by stating that 1 had no authority
over a funeral home but informing the family that any soldier
could be buried in a National military cemetery and if they
desired, that could be arranged at Ft. Sam Houston or Arlingtn.
