Plymouth, Michigan
January, 15th. 1949
Senator from Texas
Lyndon Johnson
JAN 19 A.ILL
Washington,
D.C.
Dear Sir:
I sent a letter to your governor with a clipping
enclosed and a cartoon taken from the Detroit Free Press
showing a hooded 'ku-kluxer with a gun guarding a door
bearing 'No Admittance' on, with the heading above reading
ID'ya Think We Want The Flag of Texas Sullied? It was
the Three Rivers Funeral Home, and before it lay the
United States flag-draped coffin of Pvt. Felix Longoria,
Luson War Hero of Mexican Descent.
The last paragraph of the article said:
The map shows that Texas is the largest state in the Union.
Today, in the eyes of sincere Americans, it is dimly, much
smaller than tiny Rhode Island.
It was indeed gratifying to read tho' that you,
Senator Johnson, from Texas, saw to it that Private Longoria
had a hero's grave given him in a hero's cemetery. The mean
earth of Three Rivers is not worthy for such an one.
I know neither the dead soldier nor you, Senator.
But as a stranger I wanted to thank you that such as you are
in Washington with a 'white' heart for the truly great.
Very truly,
E.Fletcher Campbell
941 West Ann Arbor
Plymouth, Michi gan
(A veteran of World War I).
