PLaza 7-6684 THE PACIFIC WAR MEMORIAL IS A SCIENTIFIC FOUNDATION for the advancement DEFINITION of knowledge through research and conservation in the Pacific Ocem Areas, and dedi- cated as a living memorial to all those who served in the armed forces of the United States in the Pacific. It has the full endorsement of the Pacific Science Board of the National Research Council, government agencies, the scientific world, and of the Navy which has the responsibility for Island governments under the United States Trusteeship of the Pacific Islands, ORIGIN THE PACIFIC WAR MEMORIAL ORIGINATED WITH A GROUP OF PACIFIC VETERANS who believe that, instead of the traditional monuments which commemorate war services, there should be estáblished an organization to study the peoples and prob- lems of the Pacific area, and especially to conserve its natural resources. The concept of this unique Memorial was placed before a distinguished group of Americans, both scien- tists and laymen, and received unanimous approval. The Pacific War Memorial was formally incorporated by the Honorable Henry L. Stimson in September, 1946. PROGRAM THE MEMORIAL PLANS TO: a) ESTABLISH PROGRESSIVELY AND MAINTAIN A SERIES OF MEMORIAL FIELD STATIONS on carefully selected Pacific islands offering the most fertile conditions for research in the natural, physical and social sciences; in tropical diseases; in new sources of food; and to make these Stations available to accredited scientists from universities, museums, and other scientific institutions. The Memorial has recently acquired from the Navy the Japanese scientific research building on the island of Koror in the Palcrus to use as the first Field Station. b) ESTABLISH MEMORIAL CONSERVATION AREAS AND SANCTUARIES where the unique wildlife of the Pacific islamds will be preserved. The small areas of original vegetation remoining on the islond of Saipan have al- ready been set side as the first of these conservation areas. c) ESTABLISH MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIPS to permit qualified applicants to undertake or continue scientific studies in the Pacific. = d) FACILITATE AND COORDINATE PACIFIC RESEARCH. By close coopera- tion with all government and civilian agencies with jurisdictions or in- y xt terests in the Pacific, the Memorial hopes to bring about a continuous and coordinated survey of the Pacific in all its scientific aspects. By dissemi- in nating to the scientific world the results of important Pacific research pro- 200 jects, the Memorial will facilitate the application of such findings to the advancement of human wellare. Eventually it is planned to establish Memorial headquarters in Honolulu which will provide laboratory and other facilities for evaluating and distributing the results of the work done MEANS at the Field Stations. The directors of the Pacific War Memorial are soliciting memberships and funds to expand this important project. The ultimate goal is a $10,000,000 endowment fund. All contributions to the Pacific War Memorial are deductible for income tax purposes. .Y Members will be periodically informed of the activities and progress of the Memorial cmd are cordially invited to visit the Memorial headquarters in New York City.
