It all started when T.W. Kennedy, menager of Rice Funeral Home here, declined use of his chapel for services for Folix Longoria, A member or the family compleined so Dr. Hector Garois of Corpus Christi, president of the GI Forun. Gareis, after talking with Zennedy, charged that Rennedy's action was an aot of disoriminution ageinst Ameriouns or Mezioan descent. Kennedy at the time said: "We just never did mako e practice of letting them use the chapel." DISCHIMINATION INTENT DENIED. Lator, Kennedy denied any inten- tion or BOT of discriminatory prectice on his part. In a lengthy statement issued Thursday he suid he had suggested the une of a private home instesd of the chapel because he had heard there was "some con- flict between" the soldier's widow and his purents. (In Corpus Christi Dr. Gercio relensed a letter from Kennedy to Mrs. Bentrice Longoria, the widow, which soid in part: "If there was e misunderstanding on my part, my apologies are extended. If you still want use of our funeral chapel and want us to conduct aor- vices, we will be only too glad to be able to be of sorvice....") Remsey said he was hoperul that plans might be ande even at this lete date to bring Longoria "home". Meanwhile there was nothing to indicate thet the Longoria family would chenge arrangements, made by Sen. Lyndon Johnson, to bury Longoria in Arlington National Cemetery. (Dr. Gercia said last night that 8.0 for an we are concerned, the case is closed. The family is woll pleased with arrangements." In his statement Thursdey Kennedy asid thet original plens celled for use of the chapel and that he had or cando no objection. He said he suggested use of a private home only after he had heard of differ- ences between members of the surviving fomily because he didn't want the chepel to be the seene of any trouble. He seid that Mro. Longorie, the widow, offered no objections et the time, but that her parents in Corpus Christi were disturbed and "instend or contacting me to make arrangements, they took the matter to Dr. Hector Garoim in Corpus Christi.
