Document source description

This file unit contains a letter written on May 31, 1864, by Joseph E. Harvey of Company K, 9th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, to his wife, Mary L. Harvey, at Saratoga, Winona County, Minnesota. Mr. Harvey wrote this letter while he was aboard a Union vessel on the Mississippi River above (north of) Memphis, Tennessee. The letter indicates the vessel had passed Forts Pillow and Randolph that day and had obtained a supply of coal at Cairo, Illinois, the previous day. The letter is accompanied by the envelope in which it was mailed to his wife.

It provides evidence of his experiences that were not documented in official records such as his Compiled Military Service Record (CSMR) in Carded Records Showing Military Service of Soldiers Who Fought in Volunteer Organizations During the American Civil War, 1890–1912 (National Archives Identifier 300398), in Record Group 94.  The Minnesota Historical Society holds a different letter from Mr. Harvey that is also dated May 31, 1864."
