MEMORANDUM
6153
THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTON
CONFIDENTIAL
ACTION
December 8, 1973
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
FROM
Henry A. Kissinger
SUBJECT
Reply to Trudeau's Letter on His China Visit
On October 29, Prime Minister Trudeau sent you the letter at Tab B
offering you the impressions he gained during his visit to the People's
Republic of China and his conversations with Chairman Mao and
Premier Chou. His visit seems to have gone smoothly. He notes
Chou's expressions of deep distrust of the Soviet Union, and he
informs you that PRC-Canadian understandings were reached on
several matters -- including a trade agreement and a cultural
exchanges agreement. He says he was left with an overall impression
that the Chinese leadership is convinced of the benefits to the PRC of
worldwide stability.
The letter for your signature to the Prime Minister at Tab A would
thank him for having thoughtfully provided you with a report on his
trip. Your letter has been coordinated with Dave Gergen.
RECO MMENDATION
That you sign the letter to Prime Minister Trudeau at Tab A.
