THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON
INFORMATION
January 17, 1972
MEMORANDUM FOR THE PRESIDENT
FROM
Henry A. Kissinger
HK
SUBJECT
Letter from Prime Minister Trudeau
Prime Minister Trudeau has written you an unusually warm letter to
thank you for your hospitality during the recent US-Canadian Summit
(Tab A). He says that the visit, while brief, was SO well or ganized that
he was able to return to Canada with a much better appreciation of the
US viewpoint.
Prime Minister Trudeau expresses his pleasure at your expressions of
warmth toward Canada and at the United States' desire to respect
Canada's identity. He informs you that he conveyed these views to
the House of Commons upon his return from the Summit. He closes
by repeating how much he and his wife are looking forward to the visit
by yourself and Mrs. Nixon this spring.
You have since sent the Prime Minister a congratulatory message on
the Christmas Day birth of his son (Tab B).
