STS 15004 RN TU CANADA 12/18/70 23731 THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON December 18, 1970 Dear Mr. Prime Minister: Thank you for your letter of October 20 recounting your recent visit to TEKTITE II and expressing your interest in greater cooperation in undersea programs of mutual interest. I appreciate your thoughtful remarks, which have been passed to those responsible for the TEKTITE project, and I share your belief that there are considerable benefits to be derived from collaborative marine activities. Your suggestion that experts of our two countries meet to explore the possibility of cooperation in undersea programs is most welcome. I would suggest that our representatives also, and at the same time, investigate other areas of mutual interest in which we might expand cooperation in the fields of marine science and technology. A team consisting of representatives of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Depart- ment of Commerce), my Office of Science and Technology and the National Council on Marine Resources and Engineering Development is being designated to meet with your representatives at a mutually agreed time to discuss cooperation in undersea programs and other related activities which may be of interest to both our countries. Constructive cooperative activity in the marine field would provide valuable experience and informa- tion and contribute further to the fruitful scientific Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified
