John Cannon (in Gov. Rockefeller's office)
Mr. Kissinger
2/14/69
Draft statement that Rockefeller would like to see the President make is
going to be delivered to HAK's office this evening sometime. Gov.
felt that the statement Vaky sent up did not do justice to the importante
of
the mission, and he is very conscious how the Latins will regard
how the President makes the statement. HAK asked him to furnish
both Vaky's statement and the revised version, and he will check it out
with the President who, he is quite sure, will go along with the version
the Gov wants. The Gov. wants to talk to HAK about it.
Secy Rogers had indicated that they would be quite happy to go along
with the new version. (Rogers does not know that HAK is getting a
copy -- and HAK said he'd square it with Rogers.
Cannon is getting a copy in mail tonight, special delivery.
HAK said he thought the President would be happy if Frank Murphy (former
were
Chancellor of UCLA) xixe made part of the team; and unless Nelson has
personal objections to him, it would sort of settle question of level of
the delegation. HAK said (1) the President is eager for this to be a success;
(2) whatever Nelson wants, he will, within reason, go along with. HAK
said, "Could you let me know tomorrow (Saturday) about this ?"
(Governor Rockefeller was going to be in Tarrytown during the day on Saturday
and in Ny in evening for a political dinner
HAK: I'll call him in The morning.
