TELECON Ron Ziegler 5:00 2/18/69 Number one, Z said he had talked to Bob McCloskey. He suggested that the President give an off-the-record backgrounder on Friday. Suggested that HAK be present. HAK said o.k. The second item. . Z announced that the President had been in contact with de Gaulle within the past few days. H said maybe that wasn't exactly accurate since it was a bout a week but that it wasn't that important on the dates. Z didn't know that the Pres. had received a reply from de G last night and was worried that the press didn't know that. K said not to worry about it but didn't think that the President's daily correspondence should be made into public announcements. Z said this usually wouldn't happen but there was SO much confusion today, he thought this would clear things up a bit. Z also said that Gen. Eisenhower had also had some correspondence. HAK said Eisenhower would go through the ceiling since he had had correspondence with de Gaulle for the past two years without it getting into the papers. X Z was upset about this. HAK said for him not to worry about it.
