Clare Booth Luce
Mr. Kissinger
3/11/69 7:45 pm
Clare asked about the Italian part of the trip and HAK told her the
Quirinale was an inspired idea. In answer to her question, HAK said
the Italians were on time. He said some members of the party were
put on a tour of the Quirinale until they were rescued. Clare thought
the trip a success, and the Communists obligingly rioted far from where
the President was.
Clare had talked with Teddy White on the phone re a book he was writing
and on which he had a problem with the last chapter--the - problem of
conclusions about Nixon. Clare told Teddy he was silly, he didn't have
to draw conclusions at all, that everything in the future is a question mark
and he could leave things that way. He was impressed by what she told him
but she thinks the heart of the matter is he is a Democrat and Liberal
and it's hard for him to say anything pleasant about Nixon, but even so,
she thinks it's going to be a good book.
Clare said only reason she called was to say hello. She is going to
Honolulu for a couple of weeks to see about her house.
She referred to the Post story about her in Sunday's paper and said
it was SO accurate that she has not doubt it leaked right out of the Secy's
office. She said it wasn't a pleasant story. She is going to drop HAK a
note about it, which will put him in a better position to take it up with
the Secy.
HAK invited her to come see him next time she is in Washington, and in
the meantime, kapax "let me hear from you. 11
