Telecon 3/18/69 11:;0 Hedley Donovan (Time, Inc.) HAK said the President was talking about some of our problems regarding our positions being complicated by press coverage. He said we needed the patience and understanding. He thought if we could get a few people -- senior editors and be fairly candid about the situation, it would help. HAK said Donovan would be free to make his own judgments, but said he could not use anything HAK said. HAK said it would make sense only if he could be candid and give general philosophy and nothing precise. Donovan understood and agreed. HAK said the President's first concern was if the things we are trying to do leaked, it would lo se its effectiveness. The people must be reliable. Donovan assured him they would be. Donovan said this would all suit him and he would get with Jim Sheply to make arrangements to come to Washington. He would be back to HAK with some suggested dates.
