Mr. Kissinger
4-9-69
12:38 PM
shortly
R said he was going to see the King of Jordan/ and wanted to give him
this word about planes - (F 104s) in principle. R said he wanted
to be sure the President is o. k. on it. K said he has not looked
at it yet but K's own view is that we shoud go ahead with it and
asked if that was R's view. R said yes and also Lairds.
(I had to get off telephone to answer intercom and when I got back
on subject had shifted to Vail)
K said Vail had called him this morning about Ambassadorships
to Japan and Germany. K asked the President khk and the President
asked K to check with R to see what he thinks about it. K said he
has no view. R said he thinks it would be very bad - Vail is
a lightweight. K said the President told him that he did not think
Vail was interested. R said they have been talking about Gates
for Germany and Armin Meyer for Japan. K said he makes no
personnel recommendations unless he is asked. K said whether or not
the President has told Vail he would like him to consider
being Ambassador to one of these two countries, the operational
problem is the same because Vail thinks the President said this to
him.
