-2- route and after he had talked to Long. I know Piore very well. He came to me originally on this. Kissinger: I don't know the fathers of science very well, and I've had a phone call from George Kistiakowsky, who is generally over- wrought right now because of Harvard, which led me to believe that he was very conscious of the hurt that was being done to the scientists XXX, but perhaps less conscious of the problems the President has. If we do arrange this meeting for the council of the National Academy there should be some magnanimity on the other side. Killian : I agree completely. HAK: And the three people they recommend, we aren't going to ask what their political connections are, but they shouldn't be Jerry Wiesner. They should be people who command a wide sonsensus in the scientific community. I don't even know three on the board. Killian: Fred Seitz is the president of the committee. HAK: Everyone tells me people don't have confidence in him, and we should work with Hendler. Killian: He is an unimpressive figure, I must say. Hendler is coming in to that post on the first of July. Could I have a chance to look up the membership of this group to see who is on it, and I will try to give you another reading. HAK: The President's advisers have the legitimate feeling that, considering from where they have started, they've come a long way. (Killian: they certainly have. ) HAK: And that scientists have not always shown full compassion for them. They don't object to the position on ABM, but to the constant changreg of bad faith. Killian: No, that's not tolerable. HAK: Could you give some thought and call me back? Killian said he would. ## Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
