HAK: Sunday is out of the question. Saturday afternoon or Monday.
Why don't we wait on that to see what our friends can produce?
DuBridge: All right; you talk to Killian. You let me know whether I should
call Manny or what steps to take. I do think I ought to inform Handler,
Chairman of the Board, as to what is going on, on a very confidential basis.
It seems to me there was confusion here yesterday also. The Council of
the Academy is in regular session on Saturday. The Council, plus other
people known as the Governing Board, is in session on Sunday. The National
Academy begins scientific sessions on Monday, all day. Tuesday there is
election of members and officers, and SO on.
HAK: The Pres. shouldn't meet with anyone this week; I think he will
be fresher on Monday morning.
DuBridge : In that case he should be prepared to say something to the entire
Academy membership meeting on Tuesday.
HAK: I think all he wants is to meet with the Governing Board at the White
House, preferably Monday. Why don't we see how things go today with Manny ?
DuBridge: Thanks very much. This is beginning to look up. I had a long
talk with Burns about it last night. He completely agrees that this thing
is right, and political advisers to the President have been wrong on political
matters.
