TELCON Stanley Hoffman Mr. Kissinger 4-27-69 7:45 p.m. H said all I needed was a crisis in France in addition to one at Harvard. K said you are truly an indispensable man although I disagree with what you did at Harvard. H said don't believe all that you read in the papers. K said Stanley, I was wondering if I could ask you to do a favor as quickly as possible on the implications of this. You know he has actually now resigned. K said I don't understand why he made this one an issue. H said I don't either. K said the President was asking why he made it a personal issue. H said he probably saw it as a tremendous first step, reversing centuries of centralization. It was important to him and not to others. K said what I would like, if you could do it, is two or three pages of how you see the foreign evolution. K said the President is circulating your article. He is eager for this paper from you. H said alright. K said how will you get it to me. H said I will send it to you. How soon do you want it? K said the sooner the better. H said I also need a bit of information - how about Thursday. K said that would be too late. H said alright I will do it tomorrow. K asked H to call him when he had paper completed. H said I will. K asked H how he was holding up. Then they discussed situation at Harvard. H said I will get in touch with you when this is done.
