Secy Rogers
Mr. Kissinger
6-4-69
6:55 PM
R said he thought it was up to both of them to keep the other constantly
advised about press conferences and what they say, etc. K said he
sent it over to R the same evening. R asked if K was going to have
one this week on Friday. K said no - there had been some thought about
it but he is not going to do it. R asked if there was anything he should
be careful about tomorrow - not saying anything on troop replacements,
he will just duck completely. R asked what he should say about purpose
of meeting and K said it was to plan stragegy - review Vietnamization of
war. R said on coalition, he will say what he did in his backgrounder
.
R said he did not mean to hurt K. K said Bob said R said that it was
definitely pinned down and clear that it came from K. R said these
were not leaks, just came from the three of us - R, K and Richardson.
R said this is quite different. K said on a number of occasions when
Pres read something about Elliot in press briefings, K told him it was
misrepresented. K said he thought Chal Roberts came out of conversations
with both Elliot and K. Whatever he misrepresented, he drew from
everyone. K said in any event, when he has opportunity to play role
with President it is to ease his concerns and CXIXIX suspisions rather
than to pin them on someone. R said if we do our job right there are
bound to be some soxtx store he will not like - you cannot do it any other
way. R said he thought the Roberts story helped rather than hurtus
-
whoever is responsible did not hurt the Administration. R said he told
Pres he should not react SO quickly. R said Fulbright make a rough
attack on Pres today. R said he really is sorry, he did not mean to hurt K.
Kx R said these jobs are tough enough without this. K said he does not
take their problems to the Pres, R can be sure of this.
