Secretary Laird
4:00 p. m.
9/12/69
K said the President talked to Abrams and McCain after lunch. Abrams
mentioned the menu and he told me to tell you that he wanted to go
ahead with one more series. He wanted to see recommendations on a
regular basis. Given their problems last week I wanted to make sure
you knew. Laird thought it was handled poorly last week. He could
have saved the disaster. K told the President this morning that it was
a complete goof. I don't know why, but I had in my mind when you called
that you were on the way to the airport. L said Abrams had gone to
Thieu himself that morning. It was an order of the President but it is
my job to keep him from giving orders that would have
adverse implications.
On the Green Baret report this was the situation. Haldeman, Ehrlichman
and Harlow feel it would be a disaster to let this go forward. They have
siad this to the President. I am to talk to Resor. Resor gave the record
to Ehrlichman and it was supposed to be held until Ehrlichman can pass
judgment. L said they have the idea we chan change the report of the
Generals. K said only the President or L could stopit. on the basis
of national security. L said the confessions are very detailed as you
know. He actually did it. K said it was a lousy record., and wondered
XXXXX what CIA was doing. L said CIA gave a backgrounder to the
press. K indicated that the President was very unhappy about that and
had K call Helms on it. L didn't know that but knew that Mullenhoff
had been talking to people about it. K said he would shut him off
immediately. K asked ifL could hold it until Monday. K didn't call
L back because he didn't have anything on it and was waiting for
Ehrlichman's recommendation. L was going to call Ehrlichman and
see if he had the confessions and if he didn't would send them over.
