Mr. Kissinger
Mr. Halperin
9/11/69, 7:25 p. m.
K said Al told me about Loory and I called him. I told him that there
was absolutely no truth to any of these stories. I told him that your
relationship with me was superb, that I was keeping you on as a
consultant, that you made no request for increased authority, that
I was hoping to get you back, that this was something you wanted to
do for a long time, that there were no problems with you and that I
was satisfied. H said he wondered where L got that from. K said I
had a call from some newsman saying that you had asked to be made
deputy. K said I don't think the source is Lynn or Sonnenfeldt. K
asked if H ever said anything to anybody. K said I heard it about
the time of your first letter. Somebody called me in early August
on the West Coast and asked me that question. I did not tell you
because I just denied it. K said I propose to say that I have the highest
regard for you. H asked if K succeeded with Loory. K said that if he
write what I told him he has to write that we are anxious to keep you.
H said I just hope this does not embarras you. K said I have to take
this but it is not something I like. K said they may try to prove that a
lot of people are leaving my staff -- if anyone gets hurt it will be me.
K said I can only tell you that I am said about this and I hope we can
get as much of your time as possible. H said thank you for calling.
