Telecon James Shepley 3:45 p. m. 9/25/69 S talked to Hedley Donovan at some length. He is quite surprised by the interpretation by XXX their Washington Bureau Chief and surprised by what W K said was confirmed by the Managing Editor. Grunwald said to K that they would report that alot of people would say we should do more. K indicated that he would never tell a magazine editory what news they should report. baxxxxxxxxx. Hedley thinks there are commitments to be made on details but that in terms of the basic strategy of trying to Vietnamize the war and get a negotiated settlement if you can in Paris, They have Harris doing a poll for them trying to find various options but this is the state of mind of the population. They don't know how this poll will come out. K xxxxx K said anything that is factual we don't presume to make any suggestions. The basic point is how to convince Hanoi that there is a fair compromise. One half of the Vietnamese position is quoting American critics of the war, K added. S thought it would be good if Hedly and he came to Washington. They agreed that Hedley Donovan, Henry Grunwald and Shepley would join K for lunch on Wed. Oct 1 at 12:30 in K's office.
