TELCON Joe Kraft Dr. Kissinger 8:20 p. m., 11-5-69 K said Joe I am sorry you are distressed. Kraft said well you had some briefings after the speech and I was not included. K said I never arrange anything. Herb Klein got together the three network people - Howard K. Smith, Dan Rather and John Chancellor on Tuesday morning and asked me if I would see them. I saw no one on Monday night. Herb Klein asked me if I would see these three people since they had to get ready for their broadcast. Those were the only people I saw. This afternoon Hugh Sidey called and asked if he could see me about a story he was doing and I saw him. Kraft said the reason I am angry, I asked Ziegler about it and he was rather abusive. I called Tony and did not get a call back. K said I give you my word I just heard about it. Kraft said I called five or six hours ago. K said all I want to tell you is that when you want to see me I will see you. Secondly, I was not giving any briefing to anyone. The only people I saw were these three network people and really doing with them what should have been done before the speech. K said the only other one I saw was Hugh Sidey who is doing a color story. Kraft asked K if there was any reason why Ziegler could not have told me that? K and Kraft then discussed previous conversations they had on Vietnam speech. (Could not hear Kraft at all during most of the conversation). Kraft said you don't find lots of interesting elements in that Ho letter. K said what would you consider lots of interesting things? Kraft said the words I remember were reference to ten point program and final sentence said something about good will. The reason I am so annoyed is that I thought I had to reflect and SO I did not write anything. K said this is very anguishing to me - it is something that I would be glad to discuss with you at some time. If you tear the Administration and me to pieces, it will always cause me great anguish not to be on the same wave length. I don't doubt your sincerity. K said will you still let me come on the 14th. Kraft laughed and said yes. K said all I want you to know is that whatever dedication I have had to get this war settled has been increased in this job. And maybe when the whole story is apparent you will think more kindly. K said let me again express that I couldn't be sorrier if I have caused you anguish. Let's say when you call and say it is important I will see you and you will be the judge of what is important. mlh Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
