R: It will irritate some of the peaceniks. The Christmas thing you sug-
gested is very good.
R: I had lunch with the group. We didn't discuss Vietnam till the last minutes.
I made a comparison with the Kennedy period and Sidey said that's true. I men-
tionsed the Nixon Doctrine, the Latin America speech, Okinawa
And in Vietnam
they feel you've gotten ahead of the game. They don't even harrass me any more.
P: And we had to stop Hedley Donovan from writing a bug-out piece.
K: Yes. I had to plead. They don't even question me any more.
P: The Nixon doctrine, Okinawa, China and you can throw in Bucharest,
the Soviet Union, SALT--welve accomplished something there. And the same
leadership in Europe.
K: I said those lads have known and trusted you for a long time. I said
wouldn't you have to say we're heading into a successful period of foreign policy?
For Donovan I was working to a hostile audience, This time it was quite the op-
posite. It never was ecstatic, as it would have been for Kennedy.
P: I have a sneaky feeling it just might work and the massive response against
the demonstrations, for Agnew, for patriotism.
K: The mentioned the enormous support the P has. Time isn't nagging any more.
P: She was wrong on the word count; I was right. It's one third as long as
the other speech. Should be about 11 minutes.
K: Fine. Five would have been too short.
P: 10 or 11 - - can't really report in less then 10.
K: No, it would look superficial. The casualties were 85.
