Telecon Hillenbrand 1/7/70 H: On the Pompidou visit: The French put great stress on the significance and importance of the President's attending the dinner, pointing to the precedent created by De Gaulle. K: When you say the French I know it's that pain the in the neck, Lucet. He's made that point to me to excruciating lengths. I told him I would present that to the President at the best time for the most favorable decision. I think we can swigg it if they don't force my hand. H : There are 2 precedents: President Eisenhower did it when DeGaulle came the first time and DeGaulle did it in Paris. Of course it presents a precedent other countries may wish to emulate. K: That's what's on the P's mind right now. H: But of course this is a special thing it could be pointed out. The Chief of State and head of Government. K: I am planning to firm it up on the trip back. I've xunk sounded him out and I think he's favorable. H : Second, in fonnection with the telegram from Madrid K: I was fnrious about that. H: I can imagine. K: Burchinal requested an appointment with me. I saw him for 10 minutes and said the P was interested in the bases. That's all I said. H. Lest one be confused, I assume you don't want to correct the record by an official message. If we could say we've gotten your permission to K: The P would like a successful correction. H Everybody would like that. K: But this isn't essential to our security.
