Telcon Rowland Evans 1/12/70; 8:45 p. m. K: How are you? Now you have got me taking over the Middle East. E: I didn't say you were taking it over Wait until about 6 months until this thing gets into high gear. How was San Clemente? K: It was good. E: I don't know how bad this is for you, but is there any chance of coming to see you 20 minutes some day this week or even for breakfast. I am leaving on Monday for Cairo, Libya, Syria. I did that TV interview with Mrs. Meir, the net work is giving Colonel Nasser a chance andhe accepted SO I have to go and do him for an hour. I can make it any time you say except for lunch any day this week. K: Let's say two things. One, I will definitely do it. I will try to call you tomorrow to fix a time for breakfast or in the office. E: Breakfast is better. I find you come to breakfast fresh from your couch with a mind uncluttered with all the affairs of the world at a quarter of eight. K: In other words, when you see me in the evening I am all fogged out. Since you introduced me to Ethel you have a special claim on me. E: Well, she asks about you. She wants to know how you are doing. K: What do you tell her? E: I tell her he is running the country. If it blows up he is doing badly, if it does not he is doing well. Will you have your secretary call me or do you want me to call her. K: I will get her to call you, Wednesday, Thursday, or Friday. E: All right, sir. I will see you Thursday or Friday, I cannot come on Wednesday. K: Good, Rowland. ms Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
