Walt Rostow
1/13/70 p.m.
R: Two things: first, you asked me for a piece of paper. I
will have it for you tomorrow if we see one another. Otherwise I'll bring
it along.
K: I don't know if the President (Johnson) will trust you - -
I do, but I don't know if you will be there. No, I'm joking - - did you every
find out about the rumor that he doesn't like to be briefed by other than
the x cabinet people.
R: That's absolute nonsense--he's - - delighted that you are coming.
I'm not going to show this paper to him, it's totally personal.
K: I won't mention it to him.
R: I told him I might be doing it--but he shouldn't be brought in.
K: I'll leave it up to you. No person has as much compassion for
a President as a fromer President. I don't mind his seeing it--but you suit
yourself. I will take it as a Walt Rostow paper, not as a Presidentdial paper.
But I won't object if you want to show it to him.
R: I'm coming to Washington Wednesday=
K: Why don't you ride back with me?
R: When are you going back?
K: Thesday afternoon-- may not talk tox you much.
R: No, I've got to work at my office Tuesday afternoon. I better
keep my reservation.
K: Well, consider yourself invited.
R: I'm supposed to be at the Foreign Scholarship Advisory Board
meeting, but if I can halp you
K: I'll have somethings put together for you. You tell me if I'm
leaving something out.
R: I'm more and more convinced we better keep an eye on Laos.
If I were in their position with their prospects not too good and their side
weakening
