Telecon Secretary Rogers 1/14/70 11:03 a. m. K: Something I just learned about--about - your being away when the Brandt visit is scheduled. I don't know whether you objected. I would like to accommodate you. Can you check whether there is any flexibility about your departure? R: When he is scheduled to come? K: He is scheduled to come from the 6th to the 8th. We had been looking for a time for him in March or April, but they suggested these dates an the only possible ones for him between March and May. Now I learn that you might be leaving for SEATO. R: Let me check; I haven't firmed that up. K: It would be easiest for if you could be here the first day Nothing world-shaking ever happens on the second. R: Let me see. The P said he'd like to have me go to Vietnam about the same time. K: Good idea. R: With Mel going there, and then with my going there, it shows an active continuing interest K: Yes. Good idea. Rusk never did make it over there. R: I may take Fulbright with me. K: I noticed he's working away at Agnew. R: I'm trying to maintain close relations with him. I'm just not going to let him fight with me. K: Good. He needs a good fight to get attention. I think that's a good idea. R: I called him the told him how important his ideas are to the Administration, little things like that. I think if Vietnam shapes up better He's been pretty good. K: Xxxxxs There's nothing like the bitterness there was in the previous Administiration. He's been quite restrained. And he hasn't harrassed you at hearings.
