Telecon Ehrlichman 1/14/70 p. m. page 2 E: The P said to Laird, get me 5 hundred million dollars - - you are the Secretary of Defense - - I'm going to leave it up to you. Xxxuxx You and Laird have got to ask yourselves are we settling a claim with this or K: It is my honest opinion that we have gone over the line. E: Okay, but the first time the P goes to the Pentagon for lunch and 29 mess boys serve him and every Admiral who comes up brings his military aide, and they're served off of silver, he is going to wonder. K: I'd rather run the risk that he's served by extra mess boys then lacking a ship. I think the Defense budget is below the tolerable lever right this minute. The addition of 3 hundred can be done. I do not like the Defense budget this year in the interest of national security. E: I don't stand between you and the P on this; you should tell him. K: If he tells me 5 or 6 hundred I'll get it for him, but it will then mean knocking out a carrier. E: I think you should talk to him. K: I've been ordered not to. E: So have I. I won't talk with him before tomorrow afternoon. K: Well, the next time I eat off silver plates at the Department of the Interior, you'll hear from me. E: He took it away from me this morning. He's looking to you to produce. K: You bastard, I've produced. E: You have your Secretary Rogers calling me? K: I don't know. E: He's probably going to berate me about McClintock. K: Don't let him sell you McClintock. He wants to sell him for Venezuela.
