TELECON Bob Semple 11:29 a. m. , January 17, 1970 (Got in late on the conversation) They were discussing Semple's article for the New York Times which he is writing at the moment and for which he wants to clear quotes with Mr. Kissinger. K: You may have to come to my apartment in the morning. S: I am very flexible. There is a lot of interest in the story. The real problem is writing a piece of history in the middle of a daily newspaper on Monday. I have an artificial way of doing that to get me into the story without having the reader think I am talking about the forthcoming State of the Union message. K: How you write the story is up to you. I would like the opportunity of seeing whether you have the facts all right. A lot of it is delicate. S: That is what I want, too. In going over my notes, I have a couple of questions. K: You won't have it written until tomorrow morning? If foreign affairs were like dealing with you, I would be out of business. S: If I hadn't gone to Safire's for dinner last night Barbara Hower was there. She had Ray Price cornered on the couch. K: He's a bachelor, too. Maybe Maxine Cheshire will get a new topic. S: I didn't know how he would handle her. He stood up under it very well. K: We will be in touch tomorrow. S: This will give me time to rewrite the story according to your emendations. K: It sounds like a reasonable procedure. lds Reproduced at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library DECLASSIFIED This document has been reviewed pursuant to Executive Order 13526 and has been determined to be declassified.
