- 4 - N: I think this meeting with the British was good for all of us. They do have a view of the world that goes back through centuries and ought to cooperate. I think taking them into our confidence will help a great deal. Did you talk to Stuart? K: Yes, he was enthusiastic. Trent, who is their Cabinet Secretary was impressed by the meeting and says he has never heard the Prime Minister SO enthustastic about anything as the NSC meeting. Trent was not at the NSC meeting. N: Thorough notes were taken and I want him to have a copy. They will give it to him. Can you have your guy give him a copy? Give Trent one and tell him I thought he should have been at the meeting and I didn't realize he was not there. And I want him to have a complete transcript. K: What he sais is that he wanted to send over three or four of his people to see how we have organized this machinery, to see what they can adopt. N: You go ahead on this intelligence thing. K: Yes, I had a little talk with him. N: Well, this damn infiltration thing, of course, it doesn't prove anything yet, does it? K: No because if their figures are correct their numbers have been going down SO that they should just be replacing them for the time being. For two or three months we don't have too much to worry about. N: I don't give a damn about two or three months. I want to look down the road and see when we are going to get this damn thing over with. There is no answer to winning it. K: If they don't start negotiating in February then I think some jolt may be necessary. N: You have a feeling the jolt may start the negotiating pattern again? All right. Fine. ms
